As someone from the yellow area who has visited the black area many times, I can confirm, btw people from yellow and orange area CAN UNDERSTAND HINDI, most of them at least, but they speak their own regional languages, I speak telugu which is the second most popular language in India.

Primarily, it's flawed. People will understand Hindi almost everywhere, except the far East.
And to the black region, they actually despise Hindi, and had a huge protest, when the government tried to enforce it as the national language. That's one of the main reasons India doesn't have a national language.

Oh yes , a huge backlash was faced by the Government when they decided to make hindi as the sole official language back in 1965 , but after a lot of protests from Tamil Nadu , the government brought back english for use in the parliament and it hasn't changed since then , there's hindi and english as the official languages , while there is no national language. And there have also been fresh events of the language disputes of the Tamil Nadu agains hindi and it's pretty natural knowing that the Tamils would do anything to preserve their language and culture and it's debated to be the oldest language rn.

My friend is tamilian he speaks good hindi obviously with tamil accent .....his hindi sounds very cute ....but he told me mostly tamilian knows hindi or atleast understands little bit .....but they have pride in their language TAMIL therefore they don't speak Hindi and acknowledge and respect Tamil more ....I know few sentences in tamil...btw I'm from northeast India Nagaland currently studying in Assam and I understand hindi , assamese and local boli but people here generally communicate in local languages .....I know Hindi Bengali, Maithli ,Bhojpuri, English, little bit Korean (because I'm kpop and kdrama fan 💜) whether it's Hindi , Tamil ,Assamese, Bengali, Marathi ,Kannada, Bhojpuri ,Punjabi , Oriya WE INDIANS ARE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE LIKE BROTHERS 🇮🇳....

Looks unique on seeing the map related to speaking Hindi in various states of India. Tamilnadu is home to anti-Hindi agitation led by political parties. Only few people protest on language but many remain in unity which proves India as a diverse country.

I know it's a meme and I laughed but people here are taking it seriously.
*India is a country of Unity and diversity. India is a union of states.* The problem starts right from schools. As you know, learning a new language requires a lot of effort. India has a 3 language policy in which Hindi and English are compulsory. English, it's an International language and it's really helpful in the internet age. It's the 'lingua Franca' of the world. So every Tamilian learns English and Tamil in their schools as their first and second languages. When it comes to the 3rd language, we are forced to take hindi (although the rules have changed in some schools). TAMILIANS DO NOT HATE HINDI. But the fact that it is FORCED on us. There are a lot of people who learn it because they enjoy it. Including myself! I'd never learned a good amount of hindi in school cause I didn't understand it. But now, I reached the Intermediate level since I'm a student in North India. But there is literally NO USE for Hindi in Tamil Nadu and no one knows it. Yet, they hire hindi people in the government offices of Tamil Nadu (passport offices, military places) and make them speak in Hindi to Tamil people who DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING. Back to the school thing, more and more students want to learn other foreign languages or may be even other Indian languages as their third language in school. But to do that in a country where 2 of them are compulsory (Hindi being not as useful as English to the Tamils), we have to sacrifice learning our mother tongue to learn an extra language.
I said that there's no problem with learning English. But only with Hindi? No, we're not against hindi. We're against the IMPOSITION of hindi. There's a huge history of Tamil being discouraged and called "nonsense" even by the Indian government (you can read more about it online). There's a DIFFERENCE between being IMPOSED a language and learning it out of LOVE and INTEREST. What if YOU were IMPOSED an alien language? North Indian languages are similar to hindi (like Spanish and Portuguese) so they learn it easily. But the south Indian language family is completely different from hindi (like Spanish and Chinese). If Tamilians were against the language 'Hindi' they would've literally been mean to hindi people. Chennai and Coimbatore are really cosmopolitain with high number of hindi speakers. We get along like any other human being. Every Tamilian has a hindi speaking friend/acquantaince. A lot of tamil films are set in North India or features north Indian actors. 'Rajinikanth', the biggest actor in Tamil cinema is from Maharashtra. We welcome everyone from anywhere. We have a saying, "vandharai vazhavaikkum ooru". A lot will be lost in translation but it means, Tamil Nadu gives a great life to anyone who comes here. 'Jai Bhim', one of the most popular tamil film had a hindi title. Cinema is a business. If their core audience hated hindi, why would the producers give their films a hindi name? And why would I even move to north India if I hated hindi? Cause I don't. I'm an Indian. I love this country. I wanna explore every culture.

So that means, one cannot be IMPOSED a language they don't want to learn. They could rather use their time in learning some other language or just not go through the stress/efforts of learning a language. I know how hard it is because I'm fluent in 2 languages, intermediate in 2 (one of it is HINDI) and in survival level in another 4. I'm doing it out of INTEREST, LOVE and PASSION. Humans are interested in different things.
So why do we NOT have a problem with English? Why do we not want to be IMPOSED Hindi? You may ask, Hindi is an Indian language and English is a foreign language. why would you prefer english over hindi?
First of all, WE'RE ALL HUMANS! I wouldn't support ANYBODY who is wrong. Even if the person is a Tamilian. Second, "When you have a small dog and a big dog, you don't make a small door for the small dog and a big door for the big dog. You let the small dog use the big door!" English is actually the Lingua franca between south and north indians. But many north Indians refuse to speak it even though they know it. They still discourage tamilians when they try their best to speak in their basic hindi. But trust me, some of them are supportive. But a lot of people regardless of their educational qualification or wealth, discourage us. They say that Hindi is the NATIONAL LANGUAGE. India has NO NATIONAL LANGUAGE. Hindi and English are OFFICIAL in the higher level. And every state has its own official languages. In Tamil Nadu, its Tamil and English. Keeping English as the lingua franca of India and not imposing hindi will actually benefit the both of us in global point of view. Whereas, imposing Hindi benefits only the hindi speakers and the speakers of a similar language and the south Indians will be in an unfavourable situation. I can agree there are a few extremists in Tamil Nadu too. But bad people are on both sides. Bad people are everywhere. You might even find people in France who hate English.
Just think about it. If you move to a new country, you'd try to use English for a while and you'd at least try to learn the basics of the local language at least. When we tamilians move/travel to north India, we ACTUALLY make an effort to learn hindi. But most north Indians (and the government) expect US to learn hindi so we can be prepared for their arrival. I do have a few north Indian friends who can speak Tamil or other south Indian languages. But most don't make an effort. Even in the worst case scenario, people in Tamil Nadu know the basics of English at least. And that goes to 70% % of India at least. The government doesn't create awareness. Instead just encourages hindi. And it's not like Tamil is spoken in a small village. It's spoken by 86.4 million people. That's more than Italian, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Thai, Polish, Ukrainian and Korean. Even if it was a small tribal language. No one should be forced to learn or do something. It's a free world. It's up to the individual to satisfy his WANTS, NEEDS and DESIRES. If it is YOU who wants something from an Individial, it is YOU who has to be prepared! (Goes to everyone).

I'm from Maharashtra (the orange shaded region) and here our mother tongue and first language is Marathi though in schools we have Hindi and English as second and third language and it was compulsory but no one ever feel that hindi is imposed on us. I'm not from a big city so we rarely use Hindi. I never understood why south Indians feel that hindi is imposed on them.

Similarly, those who want to work in the north or do business there learn Hindi. The only language we all speak is Tamil, but you want us to get rid of it for your convenience.

Marathi, Bengali, etc are in the same script as Hindi, so it is as easy as Malayalam is for a Tamil. At least the other three have some sanskrit influence, Tamil literally has more English derived words than sanksrit derived ones. Why not make the national language an easier to learn language like Bengali? Learning Hindi for Tamilians is like learning Arabic or Russian- it's a completely different script and impossible to learn as a third language.

Even in North India, Hindi is not properly spoken it's a mix bw regional dialects with their own accents. Every state, If they speak hindi will always be in their own dialects and accents. No idea if there is a place where so called proper hindi is spoken. You can find it in textbooks or old timey hindi God dramas made. Where mostly Sanskrit words are added.

There are people in all parts of India that hate Hindi, for example I’m from West Bengal, where they speak Bengali, the 2nd (or thirdif you count English) most spoken language in India. While most people there can understand Hindi and watch Bollywood, they, like most other places, don’t take it too kindly when others assume they can speak it or force the language onto them, which is understandably stupid. It’s like if someone from France was forced to learn German just because Germany is the most populous country in the EU.

Kolkata is literally a city of mixed culture. Before 1970's Punjabi was quite popular (because of the Punjabis working here) but since 1970's a lot of Bihari people have been migrating here for better life (and bought Hindi with them). It's no surprise many people in Calcutta speak Hindi but come out of the city and you will know what he meant!

As a tamilian our hate of hindi comes from the fact that the national government tried to make hindi mandatory to learn in schools in the 60's which caused an anti hindi movement here because they tried to force north Indian culture on a region that has a completely different culture with a proud history.

The India Langauage map wasn't that accurate. Both north and central India would understand hindi pretty well. South India would somewhat understand it. While the black coloured state "Tamil Nadu" might understand too, but it's just that they are too proud of their own language Tamil, so choose to not speak Hindi
