- Dilip Kumar had an ego clash with Guru Dutt over Pyaasa - an iconic Guru Dutt movie. When Dilip Kumar didn't do the film, Guru Dutt stepped in to play the lead role. Many years later, Dilip Kumar in an interview said that he wasn't keen to do Pyaasa since the role was very similar to his famous role of Devdas and as an actor he didn't find anything new to offer to Guru Dutt's Pyaasa. In the original ending of Pyaasa, Guru Dutt wanted to show that Vijay is left all alone, but on the distributors' insistence the ending was changed. The film was originally titled Pyaas (thirst), but Guru Dutt later changed it to Pyaasa to better describe the film. Apart from Guru Dutt, Pyaasa also had Waheeda Rehman and Johnny Walker playing important roles in the movie. PYASA is quintessentially 'on poetry wings' carried movie- all of it Sahir Ludhianavi métier meat from start to end. I don't see how Dilip Kumar could have carried that 'Cross'. It is like Sahir himself insisting by the making of Phir Subah Hogi on Khayyam scoring the music for very express reasons known in the public domain. As such, Guru Dutt retains his natural actor credentials. Dilip K would compulsively have turned a 'staid' role into his styled histrionics 'hoopla' (some visible in Devdas scenes that substract from the raconteur gravitas). Besides, and so in all matters in life, destiny plays the Veto card. Hence PYASA- thank God- came on with Guru Dutt. The fine actor repeated his par excellence in Kagaz Ke Phool, leaving no doubt about his superiority in his chosen acting genre. PYASA, counted among the 100 world best, settles the argument for good.

Pyaasa is a master piece.I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Vijay except Guru Dutt.He was among greatest indian directors.But I think he under estimated himself as an actor.So he approached Dilip Kumar.Guru Dutt was an excellent actor undoubtedly.Aar paar,Mr & Mrs 55,Pyaasa,Kagaz ke phool,Chowdvin ka chand,Saheb bibi aur ghulam,Suhagan...in all those films he showed his class.

Don’t even want to imagine, Pyaasa was an epic which couldn’t have been without Gurudutt. Sometimes intensity kills people. He was so intense in almost everything around that it suffocated him unknowingly. Gurudutt was way ahead of his time and born in a wrong era. Filmmaking can be learnt by just critically watching all his classics, though some of them weren’t commercially successful.

Can’t imagine anyone except Guru Dutt in Pyaasa. One of my top favorites of all time. Don’t think Bollywood can make such a classic ever again. Each time I watch it, I wonder how the cast and crew could make something so pitch perfect. My dad in his late 60s is a huge fan, I at 40 am a huge fan, and am sure my son when he grows up will be a big fan of this movie too.

This is Guru Dutt's best film ever, as a Director and Actor.Had Dilip Kumar worked in it we would have missed Guru Dutt's histrionic ability which was confined only to crime flicks till then.Dilip Kumar would have given his same old style of acting of which public was familiar with.Fortunately he didn't turn up and we came to know about The Great Guru Dutt.What Guru Dutt gave to Indian Cinema is his short span of life of 39 years Dilip took 70 active years to reach the pinnacle of Indian Cinema

I can't imagine Dilip saab in "Pyaasa". Guru Dutta saab was so perfect in this role. He was amazingly relatable in the role poet Vijay, none could fit in his shoes in this film.
I have watched Pyasa...Guru Dutt was definitely way ahead of his time...his movies speak for it...Guru Dutt movies are always counted among the premier ones among the Indian Cinemas...and Guru Dutt's acting as well direction has always created history...So Pyasa is another example of it.
May be Dilip Sahaab would have done it in his own way.Again Guru Dutt was no less.

In 2005, when my Dad (late now) came to live with me in Toronto, Canada after he retired. One fine evening he wanted to watch an old movie. Fortunately, I have a nice library. I asked my father, what movie he would like to see, so we can go, get it. He said hesitating, can we go to video store and get "Pyaasa". I was overwhelmed because I had that. That evening both of us watched it together in one sitting . I did not tell my father that I have already watched that before and knew everything about that movie and that I was a big fan of Guru Dutt ji. I did not want to break the excitement and joy of my father, who was so happy and so emotional at the same time. He was watching that movie years after since he was in University. In between he kept telling me about movie and Dutt Sahb. I very well acted and pretended that I bought it but still was looking for opportunity to watch it. Your video took me in the past.

Wonderful. A very fascinating story on PYAASA.
It’s a blessing in disguise for Guru Dutt that Dilip Kumar never came for the Muhurat. I have a strong inkling that this film would have remained unfinished if he had acted in the first few days of shooting. Guru Dutt would not have tolerated his interference. Dilip Kumar had this penchant to interfere in every film (after Aan & Andaz) as per his whims.
Finally it was Abrar Alvi, Guruswamy, Sahir and others who advised Guru Dutt, not to wait for Dilip Kumar and you yourself continue with it.
There are a few other stories also, pertaining to this.

Sir i have read different stories regarding Pyaasa Movie. This story was published in The Illustrated Weekly Of India under the title "The Thirsty man" a long time ago before the making of movie "Pyaasa". Mr Guru Dutt wrote this story before joining the Film Industry. I also read Dilip Kumar could not work in this movie because of the dispute between Madhubala and Vijayantimala regarding their role in the movie. The both actresses wanted to play the role of one character and i think that was the character of Gulabo. When it was not settled between the actresses then Dilip Kumar also did not work in the movie. Later on Mala Sinha and Waheeda Rehman worked in the movie.
Being Ardent fan of Mr Guru Dutt i am very much happy to see him in the lead role. For me he was the best in this role.

Dilip kumar was not allowed to play any more depressing movies because he was under anti depression treatment ...We should not try to underestimate a legend after he is no more .This could have been said when Dilip kumar was alive or would not have bothered ...He was not aware to this world. for nearly 8 yrs ...Have some respect to the departed SOULS 🙏🏻

Destiny plays very important role in the life of every person.
Guru Dutt really played this role fantastical and he suited this role perfectly well. We are glad that Dilip Kumar did not play this role. This turned out to be one of Guru Duty's best played role and he really looked adorable in this movie. Only if he had lived longer and gi en is many more of such amazing movies!

Nobody is indispensable. Dilip kumar should not have made a false promise. Guru dutt was as good as dilip sahib. Guru dutt was a sober and decent man. Letting down a great and sincere actor like guru dutt is regrettable.people do not like tragic films. They want to relax. A man who goes to a cinema hall to watch tragic movies is best advised to spend night at a the graveyard or shamshan ghatt.

Guru Dutt was a genius actor/ producer/ director. Untimely, demise had given others leading actors to rise their acting skills.

Dilip kumar is the greatest actor Bollywood ever had . Guru dutt is one of the best actor and director who started golden generation of Indian cinema . However there are differences in acting style . Dilip sahabs personality as a tragic rich and upper middle class lover who can argue and gives reply with other person ( quite talkative personality) not extrovert. However guru dutts character in movies depict a less talkative man who talks with his expression rather than dialogues . He depicts a talented underrated middle class personality in movies who is not getting appreciation and recognition in society.
Guru dutt is perfect for Vijay in pyasa it depicts a person who failed in everything .

However Dilip sahabs character devdas failed in love only . Devdas is a rich guy with good zamindari career and wealth .
So according to my opinion pyasa is more challenging role and difficult role to play . So guru dutt made justice in playing the role of Vijay .

It is not a surprising, at least to me, that Dilip Kumar did not do Pyasa. Dilip would not do any movie with a talented director who is also a good actor so that he will not allow Dilipsab to interfere in director's domain. Guru Dutt was a good director and a good actor too.
Another example is that of raj Kapoor who wanted dilip Kumar to play any role (Gopal or Sundar) of his choice in Sangam. Dilip insisted that Raj should refrain from directing the film and someone else should direct this film.
Who will accept this condition? Raj Kapoor? Impossible. And that's what happened also.

Guru Dutt was remarkable. By not accepting the role Dilip Kumar gas done a good job. Dilip Kumar had the habit of unnecessary interference in the script , direction and film making which a director of Guru Dutt's status would not have accepted.
