    I was always confused why Grisha was so harsh to Eren when it seemed like they were working together across time fighting for the same goal, until Season 4 Part 2 aired, and you realize that Grisha has figured out that Eren led him to take the Founding Titan, rather than stay and protect his family from the Titans, letting Carla die. Additionally, Grisha has definitely seen parts of the Rumbling so he's incredibly pissed at Eren, but just as Eren can't change anything, neither can Grisha, and so Grisha still hands over the Attack and Founding Titan.

    Legitimately thank you for highlighting how Eren, as a victim of tragedy and trauma, goes on to perpetrate it on an even worse, larger scale. I see *so* many people in the fandom making him out to be a hero for initiating the Rumbling, or who try to say that the entire world--the ENTIRE WORLD--had it coming for what happening in Shiganshina. Thank you for recognizing Eren's actions for what they are, and how the cycle of violence defines his character.

    I have a theory on this overarching theme of helplessness in AOT, as a reflection of Japan's history.
    Before the Meiji Era, Japan's policy of forced isolation (e.g 100 years of peace behind the "walls" of Paradis) caused them to become easily overcome and risked having their identity and way of life exterminated by external, more powerful and political forces. This bred a sense of resentment, despair and hopelessness - leading to the eventual warmongering / empire building that characterised Industrial Japan (e.g. fight! fight!).
    This paved the way to the attack on Pearl Harbor - or a rumbling that came from across the sea.
    Fun fact: the Meiji era also saw Japan's transition to a modern military, which included the commissioning and construction of the battleship Mikasa.

      @@sabsain2399 that's why I said depends on the circumstances... I have a family member who is a police officer and he had a terrible case (only reason I'm talking about is cause it was in on the news) but he was called in for a DV and when he got there, there was nothing but a little girl about 10-11(I just can't remember exactly) stabbing the hell out her rapist and screaming, literally anyone is capable of violence you just have to be pushed... Eren wasn't killing out of self defense for himself but rather saw them as wild animals because of the way they treated other humans so he treated them as such... He killed them quickly, but it was Mikasa the actually traumatized one who stabbed multiple times... It's all about your experience... If your life hasn't been threatened before and I mean genuinely threatened it is definitely hard to imagine hurting another human just so you can live... But once a human has hurt you in way impossible to heal from... @@elywahl9520 no worries. I think there's only so much evil that can be left unchecked and forgiven. Some people just deserve agonising punishment in the face of the immense trauma, grief and suffering they caused to someone innocent first. Given the reaction of society and laughable justice system; you really find yourself wishing you could matter into your own hands against your perpetrators.
      Back to Eren and the fictional world. You're right, that was kind of insane of him. Stalking the kidnappers to their base and then killing them while screaming how vicious they were.
      For starters, it wasn't in his self defense or any other's but I think it was mostly to save Mikasa. At that point, he had no choice but to kill them and being vicious was mostly a way to ensure that him, a 9 y/o, successfully manages to kill adults.
      I think people forget how right after this scene, he treats Mikasa with immense kindness and gentleness.
      Eren is an animal that hisses, scratches and moves to kill anyone that tries to harm or kill him first (valid) while he shows affection towards anyone that treats not just him, but those around themselves with fairness, respect or kindness. (This is before his world view changes btw)
      I like Eren if you couldn't tell. Yes, him killing 80% of humanity was unforgiveable, BUT he did rid the world of the power of titans, which people really seem to dismiss. Decades of children dying early, having to eat their parents and guardians, and mindless titans living in nightmares are finally gone

    I feel like it is also worth pointing out the character in the background at 22:19 that bears a striking resemblance to s4 Eren. I think the reason it was so controversial is because of how Isayama writes aot. I’m sure you know how much of the story is often kept a secret for a long time before being revealed. I think this style of writing led people to feel certain things came out of nowhere without actually rereading. nobody's probably gonna read this, but when there was only first season and I didn' read the manga, I always wandered: "Why nobody seemed to remember what happened 100 years ago?" The way it was narrated implied that people who build the walls knew how to build them super fast and now this knowledge is lost. Which always bugged me, because 100 years is not that long ago if we think about it. People inside the walls didn't die left and right like Scouts, they were protected, had food and an opportunity to live a simple life. So the grandparents of this generation, who, let's say 70-80 years old right now, would be kids of those people who build the walls. They would have to remember how to do it. But they didn't. And I'm kind of proud of myself for thinking that, especially considering I was a kid, cause it foreshadowed for me the fact that memories could be manipulated

    but bc the population inside of two remain walls become much denser, plan on retake the lost land of wall Maria is a simply government plan of cutting of chonk of this newly arrived population which is logical bc food resources are not infinite

      and I'm interested how much of the resistance was in people who was basically without big preparation thrown to the death - bc clearly a lot of them realise that
      I'm thinking considering armin's family history and armin himself, his grandpa must be a clever man, he surely knew that his chances of survival is almost non existent and that if he died armin, still a kid will be left alone and he can die just from starvation bc there is no adult to work and feed him (most surtainly it wouldn't be happen even if armin would not joins a military, bc even if he is not the strongest and fastest, he is very smart and have mikasa and eren. He could start working consider it's medieval setting so child labor is a usual thing). So I think maybe there was some kind of promises, decree from government like "you, man, go die in shiganshina and your family, kids and wives will not be hungry, will do something, stamps of something like that maybe"

    i definitely agree with the fact that mikasa’s connection with eren isn’t nearly as strong as Levi and Erwin but there’s a line by Levi in Season 4 about how he never failed to follow a command from erwin except for defeating the beast titan and he is hung up on it for the entire time between erwin’s death and zekes death. Definitely not as strong as the other connection but i do think Levi is Erwin’s “Mikasa”

    This is us still waiting for the second part of the final season's final two part special, I don't think homie has it in him to slaughter everyone outside the walls. I'm assuming he's gonna do the best thing anyone could put in his situation, surround the rest of the world with the Titans and continue the threat of the rumbling but never allowing anyone to forget what the humanity is capable of doing to itself.

    I know this is supposed to make the story seem "even better", but why would Armin open up a story with a lie? It makes no narrative sense. He isn't an unreliable narrator. They open stories with lies. If Armen is narrating the story, and we are pretty much agree that he is at this point, he wouldn't be rehearsing a story that he already knew wasn't true. Also how would he be neutral and retelling something that he was around for that killed a lot of his friends and his BEST FRIEND? It makes no sense.

    • @Radiogumdrop
      @Radiogumdrop 9 місяців тому +1

      He’s telling the history as everyone knew at the time. The narration is to make you believe and think the same things the people in the walls believe and think. If he starts off the narration with the truth, the twists and turns when the people learn the truth don’t have the same impact on the audience. The audience is a member of the eldian nation inside the walls and the information given is what the eldians knew as truth back then.

    • @exzyyd392
      @exzyyd392 4 місяці тому

      He's also not being neutral at all? Most of the story is almost entirely focused on Eren, Mikasa and/or Armin. Even the OVA's are about Levi and Annie, people very close to Armin.

    I actually hate the decision to kill off a 1/5th of the population. It makes no sense. The area inside wall rose is 453645 square Kilometer. For reference, the area of Germany is 357588 square kilometer. Technology-wise, they're in the early 19th century (pre-industrial). Back then the population of Germany was around 25 million. There is absolutely no reason why the vast majority of the land should stay completely empty.

    • @tFighterPilot
      @tFighterPilot 2 роки тому +1

      @Coração Acidental The thing is, they do show us that most of the area outside the big cities is empty. There are barely any villages. So the numbers check out with what we see, it's just never properly explained.

      @Coração Acidental yet I lowkey bugged me that they say 1/3 of the land is lost when the wall is breached, surely it should be much more than that given the way the walls are shown on the map

    • @tessastewart6792
      @tessastewart6792 Рік тому +3

      The decision made by the Paradis government to cull part of their population was resource based - likely heavily influenced by available food supplies. I can't quote the episode specifically, but in episode 2, season 1 the Garrison soldiers talk about a food shortage.
      Not all the land inside the Walls is arable or can be used for pasture. Considering the scarcity of meat and Sasha's comments in the first season, most of the pastoral land was behind Wall Maria, not Rose or Sina. We're not told how much land is available for food production, at least not to my memory.
      The food isn't distributed equally or according to need either - that's shown repeatedly in the series too.
      The culling was decided by the Government to protect their control over food supplies and reduce the number of people who can rebel against them when the food shortages became worse.
      An absolutely abhorrent decision, but not one to do with living space in the walls and a narratively realistic one. It does make sense to the selfish nobles and so they do so and frame it as a heroic campaign against the titans.

    Crows aren’t universally understood to represent death. Various cultures view them as either wise or trickster type beings, as well. That said, it’s probably fair to assume they’re representing Death here.
    Also, if the Ackermann thing is at all accurate but it doesn’t affect Levi like Mikasa, maybe it’s because he already lost who he would’ve wanted to protect? And his defender mechanism kicks in for his own safety rather than any other person as a result?

    I will say don't give the show too much credit. They don't know a lot of what is going to happen and occasionally just do something because they think it would look cool.
    For example, the ending of season one change. That one bothered me a lot. Setting the scene, the tunnel caves in on Eren. He gets injured and transforms, then ultimately goes berserk and that is what allows him to beat Annie.
    What happened in the manga was a lot cleaner cut character development. No random cave in. No berserk mode Eren. Just the opposite. It's the first time he intelligently introspects and fights alongside the Scouts. He even gives Mikasa the boost she needs to reach Annie's fingertips as she climbs the wall.
    He's a lot more pensive, suddenly understanding that his enemy has a face and a goal, and he actually tries to understand.
    The anime says Eren needs to be more titan to win; the manga that he needs to be more man. The arc made more sense in the manga, since Eren already tried flailing about like a dying fish.
