      🚁 At 33:37 you compared Jamie Lee Curtis' performance in this to her performance in "Freaky Friday." I just want to mention that if you enjoyed that, you might also find the original "Freaky Friday" from 1976 to be interesting. Much like "Smokey & The Bandit," it has a mid-1970s carefree charm about it, and I think Jodie Foster was a much more appealing Annabel than Lindsay Lohan. I'll put it in your suggestion form. 😎👍

      What do you mean “it was edited”? She was standing on camera in her underwear. That was her body.
      She probably worked out like crazy and starved herself to look like that for that one scene.

    Natasha was the mysterious hot vixen villain in the "ROCKY and BULLWINKLE " Cartoons of the 50's and 60's. Boras was her diminutive Russian Spy boyfriend/husband who fixated on the often unaware and naive squirrel and moose. No one ever gets the punchline from this movie anymore. It got a lot of laughs 30 years ago. Natasha's Russian accent and tight fitting clothes often black seemed dark and sinister to a 6 year old in 1966. But reruns in 1976 to a 16 year old was kind of a sick fantasy. But the 16 year old girls dug her vibe too !!! So enters the 1986 role play for young married couples. So Jamie's excitement about possibly being typecast as The Super Vixen Natasha was quite the forbidden joke for the audience.

    The reason she suggested "Natasha" is because it's from the Bullwinkle cartoon series. Boris and Natasha were Russian "bad guys" in the cartoon. It was very popular in the 60's (see my avatar)...

      This is one of the very few movie where I think the German dub is actually better than the original. They add many subtle zingers to the jokes. In the German dub, the ex-wife has not only just taken the trays, she took the ICE CUBES.

    Jamie Lee is braver than I am. The fact that she was actually hanging under the helicopter is impressive; in fact, they had to wire her up first, then fly for 20 minutes to the bridge. Stunt performer Donna Keegan did a great job being pulled out of the limo, but there's no way I'm hanging under a helicopter, stunt or not.

    True Lies. Yeah... I admit it. I love this movie. I love the action. I love Arnold and Jamie. I love the premise, and the execution. (And, I'm sure whoever-that-was. is glad James Cameron finally made a blu-ray. I'm glad! I purchased it immediately. (That, and The Abyss. Both of which I've been waiting decades for!)
    So... I enjoy watching folks react to this. Some folks don't love it, some folks like it okay. I understand. All of y'all are young, whippersnappers, raised in the post-911 dystopian America.
    (I think the sad thing is that they could have gone ahead and made a True Lies 2, with Arnold and Jamie. They could have reworked the script. And, it probably would have been an excellent movie. It's not the movie's fault. It's our changed perspective. Don't get me wrong... I've worked in aviation for decades, and I remember 911, and how everything shut down, and how everyone was in shock. Made all the more somber by the fact that the towers didn't only fall once. They fell over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. And, we all watched it. In shock. No matter what movies were made, all of the movies immediately after hit broken hearts that hadn't really wanted to grow up. But... we kind of had to. (It's debatable whether or not we actually did, but that's another conversation for another day.)
    But... getting back to True Lies. It's fun for the sake of being fun. People need to take it in that spirit. The bad guys, they were bad. Could have been anybody, but don't forget, 911 wasn't the first time the Twin Towers were bombed. 1993. But, not the same thing.
    So, what do I love best? The ridiculousness. The sweet naivete. And, my personal favorite: The interrogation scene. "Are we going to die?" "Yep."
    I agree, the whole threat with Dana at the end was tacked on, and I wasn't invested in the danger. But, it's okay. I was invested in Arnold. That said, my girls were about that age when this movie came out. And, I do remember feeling anxious for their sake. (Having kids can alter one's perceptions of movie contrivances. My wife can't watch The Green Mile, because of the girls.)
    Okay... all that to say that I'm glad you enjoyed what you could from the movie. It's a fun movie of its time. And, if you needed to have been from that time to really love it... it's okay. I enjoy your enjoyment of the things you enjoyed.
    :)
    Thank you, Kaiielle, for the watch. As always. I will look forward to whatever you watch next.

    This movie is great. And it's "divorced middle-aged man" energy is just off the charts! It's like James Cameron conceived of the entire film while seething over his wife's petition for divorce. "Oh yeah honey, what if the reason I forgot your birthday all those times was not because I was cheating on you with Linda Hamilton, but instead because I was busy taking down a international terrorist organization via dangerous spycraft!"

    6:00 The good old days of being able to drive right by the White House. This film released just before Francisco Duran shot up the White House press room with an SKS and was tackled by tourists (and not he Secret Service) when he tried to reloaded. Although no one was hit this cause Pennsylvania Avenue to be “temporarily” shut down. That was in 1994 and it’s still closed! George W. Ridiculous, outrageous, unhinged, ludicrous--amazing covers it, though, I think. 😄
    I really appreciated that Helen was added to the spy team at the end, that she held her own throughout the movie. They walked the line a few times and closer than I'd have liked, but considering the era, I like how it worked out.
    I completely agree regarding Dana. I mean, I feel like something may have been cut out, because she was nearly superfluous to the move as-is. Take out all of ehr scenes and you only really have to rejigger the end a little. Have Harry fly after Helen instead and you've pretty much nixed the only reason to have Dana in the first place. I really hope it's a matter of the editor being a little too snip-happy with the scissors and not just bad writing.
    Fun fact: The fighter jet prop Arnold Schwarzenegger sits in for the scens of Harry flying to save his daughter near the end of this movie is the _exact_ fighter jet Thor hammers the Hulk into in the first _Avengers._ Seriously, the exact same prop. They dug it out of storage.

    On of the biggest things I think about with this movie is that it came out the same year as The Mask with Jim Carrey. I remember that at the time I was so much more excited to see The Mask than True Lies, and while I did enjoy The Mask it did not come close to making me laugh as hard or as frequently as True Lies did. I mean I would not have laid money that the action/comedy movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger would have been a funnier movie the comedy movie with Jim Carrey... but it happened and I love True Lies all the more for it.

    What’s hilarious is this is based on a French dramatic movie with the same plot, up to a point. That movie is all the Simon affair vs Harry’s spy life interfering with his marriage.
    It took Cameron to breathe the comedy and high stakes action into what was effectively a French art house film.
    But this begs the question, can you do a comparison of the two versions of “Insomnia” (the American and Norwegian versions), much like the original and Americanized “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”?

    I quite like that movie... I do ignore a bit when it feels too brutal, and rather focus on the comedy side, which is very satisfying... Arnold and Jamie are fantastic, and Eliza was just a teenager then, playing a teenager... what more to expect?
    Yes, very James Bond-y, although Pierce Brosnan also did very good ones during that decade... overall Cameron wins on the fun side - many spot-on hilarious jokes, and the filming is immaculate and the script very tight - holds the attention well...

    @9:17 Idk why most reactors are so impressed that Tom Arnold didn't get hit right here, yes the pole did provide partial cover, but the assailant is also using a sub-machine gun, which is wildly inaccurate from a distance, especially compared to assault rifles or single shot rifles or pistols, and the further away you are from your target also makes it less precise, and it is also more inaccurate when holding down the trigger and just praying and spraying like the bad guy was doing here, instead of using short, controlled bursts, and of course he was also hip firing, another no-no if you want better accuracy and precision.

    • @kaiielle
      @kaiielle  6 місяців тому +1

      It's more that the bullets were whizzing past him pretty closely and a couple even hit the pole he was hiding behind, yet he managed to completely avoid it all. Even if a bullet tore his coat open in the arm or something, that'd at least feel a bit more realistic, that's all. But this whole movie is comedy and so that's just one of the scenes contributing to that with the way it is!

    I am not sure if 9/11 is the only thing stopping a sequel. In a lot of ways, like many of the 80s and 90s films, this has an innocence about it that is lost now. 9/11 is a big part of that, but the way we look at race now, or the way we even look at gender roles now. I have a close friend that is actually really troubled by some of the themes in this movie. I love it, but there are some cringe parts, and even the cringe parts bring a smile to my face because of nostalgia I guess because I saw this when I was more innocent than I am now, but there is definitely mixed feelings out there about it. Can I like something that isn't socially acceptable? Lots of questions in my head when I remember this movie and others.
    But great reaction, and I think discussions and thoughts about this are great to have.

    There was a sequel that was ready to film...But 9/11 happened.The film was canceled because there was a major plot sequence involving a terrorist crashing a plane into a high-rise building.Tom Arnold tried his best to get the studio to greenlight the film.

    One of my favourite Schwarzenegger movies. It has a great mix of Action and Comedy, especially Tom Arnold's lines.
    Most Iconic scene of the movie has to be the Dress Scene with Jamie Lee Curtis, everyone remembers that one.
    I really loved how the movie ended with Helen ending up being a Federal agent along with her husband.

    Marvel wasn't out at the time, but do you think Natasha was a call to the Marval character? Most likely she thought it was a cool name, but what a coincidence.🚁🕵💥

    • @vizh
      @vizh 6 місяців тому +2

      That was a reference to Boris and Natasha, the Russian spies from the Bullwinkle cartoon (I'm not sure if the Black Widow's name was a nod to the same source, but I wouldn't be surprised.) Now, Charlton Heston's eye-patch wearing leader of the super-secret spy organization was definitely a nod to Nick Fury (who was old and white in the comics when this came out.)

    a bit of poetic license cause im sure arnold told the pilots what kind of nukes they were, and i think they know about missiles

    • @Michael75579
      @Michael75579 6 місяців тому

      Setting off a nuclear bomb is actually surprisingly tricky. If the explosion which combines and compresses the two subcritical masses isn't timed perfectly and absolutely symmetric then the bomb won't go off; the energy buildup will blow the core apart before it hits the chain reaction stage and you'll effectively have a dirty bomb that scatters radioactive material over the local area. Still bad, but far better than a nuclear explosion. A near miss with a missile is going to damage the mechanism rather than set off the nuke.
      One movie which got this sort of thing reasonably correct is The Peacemaker, with Nicole Kidman and George Clooney. To prevent the nuke going off they remove part of the shaped charge and reduce it to a conventional explosion.

  • @Raven5150
    @Raven5150 6 місяців тому

  • @nightshade7240

    First a factual bit of information. A missile or an incendiary device cannot set off a nuclear warhead. Without going too much into it, there is a particular sequence that has to occur for a warhead to go nuclear. That sequence cannot be activated in any way by explosions or shocks or vibrations from say earthquakes. Arnold should know that, considering he knows the specifics of the weapon.
    This movie is fantastic but it could have been shorter and the bit with kidnapping Dana was just completely unnecessary. Having Dana in the movie at all just felt tacked on. Apart from that it's a popcorn movie. It's not too serious, it has great action backed up by humour and hotties.
