Riding on Manila's amazing Jeepneys

Roger has been driving his hop-on, hop-off Boracay Express jeepney across Manila with his unique blend of humor and cheerfulness for 15 years. The Jeepney is invaluable for moving the population around the megacity of Manila.
Although these Jeepneys are seemingly indestructible (built from World War II US army jeeps) the recent global events have resulted in tough restrictions on public transport. In mid-March 2020 the government stopped all jeepneys from running. Since July some have been allowed to operate again, but is this a sign of things to come?n Could the former kings of Manila's roads become extinct?

I just want to point out that the earliest Jeepneys were built from World War II military jeeps and they were actually shorter than these. Current ones you see in the Philippines, while the front may look like a WW2 Jeep, they are actually built from scratch with different front fascias.

Thanks for the input, KoushiroIzumi85! It's fascinating how a whole industry sprung up around what was essentially a makeshift vehicle - and a shame that there doesn't seem to be a clear way into a cleaner traffic future for the design. What do you think, will the jeepney survive in some form?

@@DWREV When you say in some form, then yes. The government is planning to 'modernize' jeepneys however the design they came out with is just literally a mini bus. It ain't looking like a real jeepney at all. Since drivers are not rich people, they can't afford new, modern units that still look like a real jeep. Their only option is to take up on the government's offer of "jeep" or keep using the old ones which are on the process of being phased out. As for operators with money, maybe they could buy their own but they would surely be a minuscule portion of the jeep population.
