My Grandad was the last Station Master at Cudgewa..we would spend our Christmas holidays up there ..so many memories of playing in the backyard and stopping and watching the trains come in and out.
I had been in Tallangatta in living and trying to picture this rail line because I could only see the abandoned track. As I used to travel to Cudgewa many times and see the abandoned features of the track along the way, this is one of great scenic railway lines in Victoria. Thanks for posting this video at least I saw the history. Love it so much. I wish the train could again run along this track up to its former terminus.
Terrific video. I managed to travel on many now closed VR branch lines (such as Wonthaggi and the main line to Yarram) but never got to Cudgewa. Great that you had the foresight to record this. Looked a decent train length.
Great video Richard, I regret I never got the chance to go over the whole line, I did one trip to Shelley, all at night, I can’t even remember the drivers name.
Richard I would have been about the same time, each time I worked out of Wodonga I was put up at the pub not far from the loco and I it was close to main line. The times I worked the Cudgewa line were always of a night time then crew relief then back via taxi in the morning.
That would have been The Carrier's Arms Pub run by former train driver Charlie (?) Page. I only recently discovered that I I went to Beaumaris High School with his son , John.
In 1981, the Cudgewa line was closed and most of it was ripped up apart from the short section between Wodonga and the Bandiana yards which still saw the occasional goods train. In 2009, the last remaining stretch of the line still intact from Wodonga to Bandiana was closed due to construction of the rail bypass, the line saw it's final train to Bandiana on August 27 2009 before it was officially closed 5 days later. Now, very little reminder of any trains rolling through the middle of Wodonga remains :(
The old railway line in Wodonga in the mid 1990tes early 2000 that went to Bandiana which was part of the branch line to cudgewa it had a customs depot so all the shipping containers in the area that come from Melbourne dock yards had to go through customs for quarantine clearance next to the saleyards and Rocla cement factory.
I totally agree with other comments below. It would have been one of the most scenic railways in Vic,along with S Gippy and Orbost. And that's not mentioning various other short abandoned lines like Nojee,Walhalla ,Beech Forest, etc ,etc.
As a railway concern we seemed to be poor maintainers off track work. Hardly surprising most of the lines closed the moment a suitable alternative came up.

Worked on the up Cudgewa goods whilst relieving in 1975 at Wodonga , very scenic as was the Yarram and Wonthaggi lines.
I was stationed at Korumburra Feb to April 1969
@@RichardFelstead1949 Relieved Korumburra in 1975 and worked there in 84 until line closure in 93. Ararat 82-84

Thanks. My first Wodonga job in 1969 was down midnight Cudgewa goods with driver Graeme Bowden.
I am very fortunate to have worked the Cudgewa line when I was relieving at Wodonga Loco from Ballarat East Loco back a long time ago.
I was at Wodonga Loco 1969 to 1974.

Apart from the Puffing Billy line, the Cudgewa branch would have to been one of the lmost secenis lines in Victoria.
the Wonthaggi line would have been pretty good also right there on the beach in Kilcunda.
I wish Victorian had seen the Tasmanian North East line up until it closed .

Beech Forest, was part of the now closed Colac to Crowes line, which closed in 1964!.
Noojee.
@@Stephen-dc3ogIf only more people had seen the Tasmanian NORTH EAST line to Herrick, particularly between Tonganah and Ledgerwod. Unique.
Thanks for sharing this video Richard , i wish i could have travelled this line when it was still open . Unique in Victoria .

The line is now non existent. The line only runs to Bandiana, and that is where the line ends.
Doesn't even run to there.
I worked on the line as a fireman in the mid to late 70's. I cannot remember the name of the driver shown in the clip
Les "Pee Wee" Hallawell.
