This is my favourite dialogue scene in the film. Because it’s at this point where the perception of The Matrix is no longer 1-sided. People like Neo may see The Matrix as nothing but a fake, nihilistic digital dreamworld that the human race has no right to be kept in while their bodies are used as batteries for the machines. But to people like Cipher, that doesn’t matter. So what if reality is just a digital dreamworld? The real world is far worse. People like Cipher just want to live a peaceful, successful life, regardless of if the reality they’re in is real or digital. It doesn’t matter as long as it feels real to them. If this film were written and directed by someone other than The Wachowskis, it probably wouldn’t have this dual-sided perspective that shows the audience that maybe The Matrix isn’t all bad, and some probably wouldn’t want to be freed from it, or even be willingly inserted into it to escape the dystopian nightmare of the real world. Absolutely genius writing.

This is a powerful understanding that can relate to the world we live in and goes all the way back to the story of Adam and Eve and even buddhism. Ignorance is avtually what leads to all suffering eventually. Cypher is more concerned with his pure animalistic instincts being satisfied and doesn't have the courage to face the truth of reality. Adam and Eve represent the pure instinctive nature of man and woman without awareness and knowledge of higher truths. Just like a dog or animal lives in ignorance of many truths. He was clouded by ignorance despite having the opportunity to see things truly and clearly as they are. It shows that he didn't have the courage to be able to face truth and succumbed to his primitive ignorant nature.
And where will he permanently be plugged in? Certainly can't stay in the ship, as it could be found by other ships. Does the matrix have a pod set up for him? I do tend to think the Matrix would honor an agreement, as long as it doesn't compromise their agenda. Without a specific, pragmatic motive to renege, I don't see any reason for a passionless ai to not follow through on an agreement. I think it would view it as simply another set of instructions.

I get confused watching this. When Mr Smith says he wants Zion codes, Cypher says he cant....in a way like he's said it before. So the meeting was on the basis that Cypher had already agreed to something, but not Zion codes....something else. and it wasnt to capture Morpheus because Mr Smith seemed surprised at the idea. So I wonder what Cypher promised Mr Smith for there to be a meeting at all.
Why wouldn't he? IMO there's absolutely no reason why he wouldn't do it. It could be technically complicated to take him physically back to the pods but wanting to be put back to the Matrix was evidence to Agent Smith that the system actually works and a validation they should keep pursuing Neo, Morpheus, others

Why wouldn't he? IMO there's absolutely no reason why he wouldn't do it. It could be technically complicated to take him physically back to the pods but wanting to be put back to the Matrix was evidence to Agent Smith that the system actually works and a validation they should keep pursuing Neo, Morpheus, others
the machines always hold up their end of the bargain; that was the whole point in the third film. the machines will comply with an agreement.
