THE STENNACK RIVER OUTFALL

The Stennack river drains to the sea at the Lambeth Walk but starts above St Ives in the hills where mining was prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries, 'STENNACK' being Cornish for 'place of tin'.
It feeds Consols pond, flowing beneath The Stennack road and the Royal cinema, emerging onto the beach. St Ives is lucky to have this infinite natural drain but there can be problems if torrential rain coincides with a very high tide covering the outfall tunnel, as happened in November 2002 when Tregenna Place was badly flooded.
