The Hope Family Mausoleum

- The Mausoleum was commissioned by the collector and amateur architect Thomas Hope (1769-1831) following the death of his seven year old son Charles. Later, Hope himself was buried there as were various other family members; there are 33 loculi (recesses for coffins) the last interment was in 1941. Several of the Hope family were members of the Society of Dilettanti. (The Dilettante Society or Dilettanti is a society of noblemen and scholars which sponsors the study of ancient Greek and Roman art, and the creation of new work in the style.) The structure was sealed in 1954 when it was buried up to pediment level. Grade II Listed -for-info-see www.britishlist...
In 1960 the mausoleum and surrounding land were bequeathed to Dorking Urban District Council (now Mole Valley District Council) by the 7th Duke of Newcastle in order to preserve the land as public open space.
Since 2009, the MMT and Mole Valley District Council have been in negotiation over the conservation and restoration of the mausoleum. In 2013 the council was awarded a £123,000 development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund aimed at regenerating the historic landscape. A second bid is to follow, which if successful will enable significant work to commence on site in autumn 2014. Initial excavation of the mausoleum was carried out in early 2013.
Condition
The principal elevation has been excavated (2013) by "The Friends of Deepdene" with assistance from the Surrey WildlifeTrust, Society of Dilettanti, Kuoni Travel and the Dorking Museum. These works have revealed fracturing/loss of masonry detailing, particularly at pediment level. Scaring and trace markings to the pediment indicate that a plaque/inscription panel has been forcibly removed. The archway has been partially blocked though the original metal door leafs are retained behind; it is likely given that the structure has been buried for over half a century that metal and timber elements exhibit signs of corrosion and decay.

This is a great video. And you are truly a gentleman. Your modesty, your knowledge of history, and your respect for the people laid to rest in the mauseleum says a lot of good things about you. I've subscribed to your channel.

Thank you for this very interesting tour of this mausoleum. I realize the tomb has worn due to age. It a small circular vent hole at the top and really doesn’t need more because of the cool climate of built into the side of the hill.
I very much enjoyed the history you provided { most give only photos or video } along with the video .. I will subscribe , and I look forward to more of your content .. Thank You Sir

Thank you for taking us with you on your explore! It's nice to be able to go places we'd not ordinarily get to go.
Keep posting, and I'll keep watching!
Beautiful video.Thank you
Fantastic location to spend eternity! Such a lonely, melancholy song.. I imagine the souls of those entombed there were longingfor you to stay a while longer for the company.
Laura Bentley ** I think the same . If the souls entombed knew they had a kind visitor, I am sure they would have appreciated it . Unfortunately , With any foundation built by man , sometime in the not to far future this mausoleum will crumble. 100 years from now quite possibly. Maybe some relatives could come along and fix this place up a bit .
What a beautiful piece of land
Absolutely love the music you choose for the endings of your videos.

asankaw1 Glad you liked it & thanks for taking the time to comment!
you are welcome.. !!!
??? What about that old tomb ? ....
Nice video. I cannot help but ask if Bob Hope's father may have been related. Anyone know? I believe they were from Somerset.
They were indeed. BH commissioned 3 different genealogists to trace his family line, and none of them were successful in tracing the unbroken line. (Somerset City Hall burned down w/loss of records.) BH could remember his grandfather, but no further back. But, BH was cheerful about it all. In his 90's, he joked, "So, with all the records gone, *who knows*? I might be only 20 years old!"
Will it be restored? So Historic.
kate weiss Hope so!...no pun intended. Found this, looks promising...

They are dead all hope is gone for them.
True!! My mother used to call it ‘rotten bones.’ __ All mausoleums should be bulldozed _______________________|
I wonder why they sealed off the entrance except for that square which looks like it has a metal door on it. Did they seal it because it's no longer used/visited by the family or was it sealed by city? Can the structure not be destroyed? I know in America, a place of burial can't be torn down.
selahstar Thank you for watching and taking an interest...for your info it is protectected by law..you may find this helpful. www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-289886-the-mausoleum-to-the-hope-family-surrey

Why was the structure buried?
+Jacob Marley Found the answer in the interesting articles in links below, from where i copied from....sadly it's the same then as it is now, no matter which part of the world.
Thomas Hope's great-grandson and eventural heir, Lord Francis Pelham Hope (8th Duke of Newcastle) ran up enormous debts forcing him to sell the contents of the Deepdene in 1917. By 1920 the estate was divided and sold with much of the parkland developed for residential use. The last interment in the mausoleum was of the 8th Duke of Newcastle, buried here in 1941, by which time nine of the thirty-three loculi (recesses for coffins) were filled by members of the Hope family.
In 1951 the mausoleum was listed Grade II. In 1957, following repeated attempts by vandals to break into the mausoleum the doorway was permanently sealed with bricks and a cement render and the roof of the structure was strengthened with a three inch thick cement render. In 1960 the mausoleum and about one and a half acres of the surrounding land were donated to Mole Valley Urban District for the benefit of the public. The proposal was that the council 'cover over the mausoleum and make the whole area into a garden with garden seats, providing a suitable plaque was erected at the site recording the mausoleum's existence'. At some time between 1960 and 1973 the mausoleum was buried but the surroundings were not turned into a garden. In June 2009 part of the top of the south-east front of the mausoleum was uncovered.
