Sufjan makes music you didn't know you needed. His melodies and lyrics consistantly appeal on a humanist level.
This is how I have been feeling and I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one. Sufjan splits me wide open in a way very few artists have been able to do.
He's anything but a humanist. If anything he channels the divine with his work.
@@sleepteam YES! There is def a spiritual element to all this. I'm a new fan. I had never ever heard of Sufjan Stevens until this year. (Publicist much? 😯) It's important to note I think that I'm 54 and forever chasing the weird. But I'm a rocker chick. Led Zeppelin. Stones. Black Crowes. EDM and folk music have never super-been my thing. So flash forward about 3 months ago and I am in an album listening group and someone shared Illinois. I dutifully listened. 😳 🫤 🤔 I didn't know how to like it! But in the Bible Jacob wrestled the angel to receive his blessing. And I wrestled Illinois until I started to see why everyone says it's a masterpiece. I don't think I will ever stop hearing something new with each listen but I have now become familiar with it and fond of it....and I have experienced how it draws me in. And now just about every conversation I Sufjan Stevens just in case someone doesn't know about it. Hahahah.
Then about a month ago the group had a go with the Ascension. It was so different I had to wrestle again. Long story short? It has surpassed Illinois for me. The spiritual themes demand futuristic music and the songs flow together so well. I can listen to it back to back to back to back. Its comforting and exhilarating and convicting...it speaks to me, gets me thinking about important things. It calls me to prayer. It makes me worshippy! 🥹 it is supernatural the amount of joy this album brings me.

The fact that he plays every instrument on not only this song but so many of them amazes me. he's so genuinely vulnerable and talented and I cant put into words my appreciation for him
Just about every single song from his solo albums was completely made by him. That’s all instruments, backup vocals (a few vocalists do women’s voices, Shara Nova mainly), mixing, mastering, etc. It’s really unbelievable, especially on Illinois because of how maximalist the instrumentals are. Then with Adz he mastered electronics/synths on his first attempt. And awesome this album will come with his artwork and poems/short stories, a true artist!
@@mclarensaleenf7 As much as I love Sufjan, and he plays A LOT of instruments, these albums are ALL collaborative efforts. For example, look at how many musicians worked on Illinoise besides Sufjan. Saying that he made the album by himself is seriously undermining to all the musicians who make Sufjan's art possible:

@@carolynfrancesjurgens5822 I haven't seen any news all that recent but it was reported back in September of last year that he lost the ability to walk and was relearning. Aside from that, I'm not really sure.
@@justiceteasdale2863 Justin Peck (director of the Illinoise musical adaptation) said in a recent interview that Sufjan is making his way towards recovery and is in as good spirits as one could be in his situation. He checked out of the hospital October 6th, according to a Tumblr post he made.

Sufjan i just heard today that you are having some health struggles. Im so sorry to hear that but i am encouraged that you are surrounded by the light and that you are working hard to get your life back. Praying for you! You may just be another child of God but ive never ever heard music like yours. It splits me wide open. You are in fact channeling the holy spirit, i can feel it when i listen to you. I have been hoping the whole situation with Sufjan's health comes as an opportunity and blessing in disguise in the end. It seems so darn sad but out of sadness comes great beauty, and seemingly for Sufjan so much more than most. Who knows what he can pull from all this.
