I have a harlequin. Its about 5-6 inches at this point. It hasn't really bothered any of the smaller fish in the tank. I have 4 damsels, 2 clowns, and a flame hawk with him, along with other bigger fish like angels, tangs, and puffers. He keeps to himself mostly, but he does like to swim across the entire length of the tank. It's a 210g, and I would say even that is a bit too small for him.

My experience with Harlequins are quite different. I had an Indonesian specimen and it was actually quite Timid and tended to like hiding in the little "cave" in the rock formation. It never bullied any of my fish, in fact for the first few weeks, it was bullied by my Niger Trigger. After those weeks it was fine in my tank, it ate like a champ and was the like of the tank until it passed away from Marine Velvet.

Same experience with my Oscar Cichlid. I seriously underestimated what "semi aggressive" meant. Before I knew it all the small fish in my tank was snacked on one by one -- and at night -- so I almost never noticed the fish missing until I returned from work. He even harassed some my bigger fishes as well. BUT, he was a good looking specimen and got quite playful when I got close to the tank, so I tolerated him.

I have one in my FOWLR. Mind you he plays second to my clown trigger. My tusk swims and has made a cave. He burst out on feeding time, takes a clam back to him home and then swims laps. I don't have corals as I have a other triggers and puffers but have had the tusk for over a year and so far so good. I do have a lid on my tank as I have lost one in the past as it jumped out.

I had one in one of my tanks and it didn’t bother the other fish and went about it’s daily swimming business. I did also feed my fish those little colored clams that you can collect by the THOUSANDS ( free fish food)at the beach. MOST of the fish ate them and were VERY HAPPY when I’d dump a handful of them in my tanks. The shells will build up on the bottom but you can use a Long handle net to remove them. Also, if you DO want to start feeding those Clams to your fish Dry Freeze them in Zip Lock Bags, that last a Looooong Time frozen that way. Before feeding thaw a handful of them in a bowl with saltwater, they open up and it easier for the fish to get the meat out. My TriggerFish and BIG Wrasses had No Trouble breaking open any of the unopened shells if they had to.

Thanks for this video. Please do a video on your Foxface. Beautiful fish and I can't seem to decide if I should get one considering its poisonous dorsal fins, but also that they pick on wounded coral

    • @ReefDork
      @ReefDork  4 роки тому +1

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the spines. The chances of you getting stung are so small it's not worth thinking about. But they are a risk with corals for sure, especially when they get older. I think the answer is to get one (they're AWESOME at eating algae) and buy a fish trap. Then you can catch it if it goes rogue - mine is always the first fish in the trap when I put it in so he'd be easy to catch!

I have a despot of a queen angel. She is mean and I thought long and hard before introducing another angel. I finally introduced an Imperator and it immediately cowed the queen and everything has been fairly peaceful. Still, the harlequin interests me. I have a fairly aggressive bunch of fishh so it may be worth a try if I can get an Aussie fish. I agree, the Aussie are better colored than the Indian variety.

  • @rob431

Harlequin tuskfish do not occur in Indonesia in any significant quantity and Fishbase does not even list Indonesia in the native range for the species. (www.fishbase.us/summary/SpeciesSummary.php?ID=12722&AT=Harlequin+tuskfish) While some sellers will claim their fish are imported from Indo, those fish are almost certainly coming from the Philippines. While tuskfish from the Philippines historically have had a reputation for poor survival and lackluster appearance compared to their Australian counterparts, this almost certainly has to do with differences in handling processes for the fish in the two countries. The species is only found on the east side of the Philippines, 15 to 20 hours away from the exporters in Manila and in the past this has presented logistical challenges in a country with still very much developing infrastructure. However newly implemented changes in logistics of getting the fish to Manila coupled with training in oversight and collection and handling practices for the fishermen are already resulting in noticeable differences in the fish from certain exporters in the Philippines. Aquarists should no longer be so quick to write off specimens from the Philippines and going forward many will be quite impressed with the quality, even compare to Australian fish.

Interesting. Just got a new harlequin tusk today. My tank is a predator setup with 45cm eppaulette, 30cm snowflake, adult scopas tang, adult rabbit fish, adult sgt maj damsel, juvenile spotted box fish, file fish and a sailfin tang. The sgt maj damsel is the alpha of the tank. Will be interesting to see if the new tusk takes him on for alpha status, the tusk is easily twice his size, but so is the scopas and rabbitfish. Really happy with his health and vibrance, he is a good example of aussie harly tusk.

I’ve been watching how you get on with this fish as I want to move mine to from a tank without snails, crabs or shrimp to my main reef tank which has standard cuc so it looks like it’s a “no”
In his 6’ tank with equally large fish, except for a scarlet hawkish and brown barred goby he is a model citizen though. I’ve never seen any big poops either but maybe the chevron tang, a member of the bristletooth group and thus a detritivore, probably eats it 🤢 It’s a shame yours didn’t fit in as they’re so beautiful.

I have one in a 75g mixed reef. Heavy on rock work. 40% of tank. Yes he is the Alpha. My tomini Tang holds his own. The Tusk does not chase anyone, but does keep the tang in check when req. I also have 2 lyertails ( 3" long) ( the male has an attitude all the time) and 2 springer damsels.( 1" long) ( never bothers them) Snails are hit or miss. Turbos hold their own. A couple blue legs still their. My Tusk is 6"s long. I feed him 3mm pellets. He will eat any food item. My filtration will handle him for life including other fish and corals. Now I have found him swimming against a power head flow. For me a great fish. Con: No blue legs for cleanup. His personality is: Just don't harass me and all is cool. Note: I have had a red dotty back with a real mean streak, which would make my tusk look like a powder puff fish. Just saying. And Yeah you are right different fish/different personality's. ( no coral damages at all) LPS dominant, some softies and a couple SPS. NOTE: If you feed a predator live food like (small fish and shrimp) they will be a mean fish. Reference : Clown Trigger-had several ( will eat pellets and shrimp chunks) Better Fit for a fowlr IMO.

Fish only, no inverts. Never had an aggressive tusk in my life. Also they tend to be babies rather than bullies. First time I’ve actually ever seen anyone say they are aggressive since I’ve kept so many in clients tanks and always just swim away from everything. Not sure about them being first introduced but I’ve never had a single fish die from one.

My experience with a full-sized Harlequin Tusk in a 180 gallon Plexiglass tank. It was one of the last fish I introduced and it did not kill any of my other fish (Greenbird Wrasse, such a great fish, Red Hawk now there's an asshole fish, sucked the eyeball right off another fish, etc). Here's the part you will want to know about.... that MF Tusk *scratched* the fuck out of my tank, out of spite I expect. They are just smart animals and like birds, IMO they understand their captivity. So yeah, I sold that fucker and wet sanded my tank after....

That fish is hit or miss as far as attitude and what he eats it’s a gamble 😀 my harlequin tusk lives in my predator aquarium and he would not be suitable for a reef aquarium. Mine eats all shrimp and crabs except small hermits he cannot grab and pull out of there shell, mine is not the boss in the tank my grouper runs that aquarium. He is a beast for sure and will eat any fish smaller than him that was not in there before he was. Good luck anyone who wants to take the gamble 😀

Sorry, not on the current topic. But, I was interested in getting a flame hawk fish in my reef. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I absolutely love my two. Model citizens (as was the last flame I had), entertaining, great colour and look awesome. I've been thinking about adding a 2nd flame recently. They're among my favourite fish, especially the flame. Supposedly the falco hawk is the least aggressive hawk - could be worth dipping your toe in with one of them. Ultimately some people have problems with shrimp and i'd say sexy shrimp will get eaten. But I value character in a reef tank so I'm prepared to take the risk.

I te.d to think one might be alerted to the agressive nature of the tusk by it's GIANT BLUE FANGS protruding from it's mouth....I keep mine in a display tank with nothing but triggers and aggressive eels

I agree with you but a harlequin especially an Australian is just too beautiful not to get one,you need a huge tank 125 would be the minimum hes going to outgrow it,great fish if you want to keep an aggressive fish only tank I know it's crazy but I'd rather have a harlequin over any big money tang or angel there what got me into saltwater and I cant wait till I have saltwater tank big enough were I know only aggressive saltwater fish will be in it no coral no inverts, nothing I cant keep with my harlequin:)

I’ve had two of these and I think you’ve given the Tuskfish a bad rap and was not the fish’s fault. Your tank is too small and shouldn’t add small fish after a Tuskfish is in your tank. Better to ask on forums describing your tank and inhabitants before making a purchase.

Sometimes we do all the research in the world, recognise we probably shouldn't buy it... but do so anyway! 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Not sure if you've also seen 13 Months with The Australian Harlequin Tusk by Mr. Saltwater Tank TV: ua-cam.com/video/p6fZIGy4XS0/v-deo.html For me it's research and plan for the worst, hope for the best if you are desparate for a particular fish.

Why didn’t you immediate remove him after he started messing with the wrasse? Seems unnecessary and cruel to let him kill the wrasse, crabs and shrimp.
