Jesus On E's Audio Re-make - Ableton Live Playback

  • Following 21 years and 3 days since its original release at the Digital Symposium demo party on the 24th October 1992, I present my remake of the Jesus On E's demo audio!
    Recreated and sequenced from scratch using Ableton Live, the majority of sounds and samples have been sourced from the original (or better) sources and span some 80 channels of audio. The remake closely follows the original, with some artistic embellishments and modern production techniques added along the way. The remake slightly exceeds the original's runtime, totalling nearly 28 minutes.
    Due to the lack of accompanying visuals which match the audio, I have made a video of the playback in Ableton Live for you to enjoy*.
    The complete audio can be downloaded from SoundCloud for free here: / jesus-on-es-remake
    You can also find the interview I did regarding the demo for RMC here: • Echo / Spoon Wizard | ...
    Any suggested feelings of elation are completely optional
    NB: Critics may argue that this video is more boring than the original demo. The author has considered this argument and has determined that this video is in keeping with the original result.

    I'm gonna tell you man, that what you've made had an big impact in Sweden and surely many countries. We had a stupid small and very underground rave scene in the 90's. This kind of music was really not possible to find in record shops when you released this for the Amiga. So it was really gold to get it. We had only heard of the Prodigy and maybe a couple of other artists. We listened to this a lot. It was a great inspiration also for my own music productions. You made a lot to spread the rave/techno/trance music around the world! I think you made more impression than most record labels from that time. Cheers : )

    Jesus On E’s blew me away. I’ll never forget where i first heard it, round a mates house with the Amiga rigged up to his Kenwood Hi-Fi with his mum yelling at us to turn it down. RIP Howard.

    I actually bought an external drive to run this all those years ago, great to see and hear for that matter that the original creator of this incredible peace of Amiga history is still with us, happy memories of the most creative time in modern dance music.

    Holy shit! this takes me back! I had my 1200 wired to my Panasonic VCR, it had editing functions. I taped this and many other Amiga demos and compiled a 4 hour tape. I was friends with a DJ in a local rave club and he displayed my tape looped on the screens in the club. Great times!

    So many happy memories of turning the lights off and playing this demo on my much-loved A500 despite never having ever listened to anything remotely similar either before or since. Thanks for contributing to those special Amiga years! Even after all this time, listening now, every sample and musical twist and turn feels familiar. Despite its approaching midnight and my need to go to work tomorrow, I'm simply unable to interrupt this epic mod and go to bed! :-D

    Love this, I really do. Ive listened to the original so many times it feels as though some of the 4 channel charm is missing, a bit like listening to Kraftwerk remixes. It does mean though that I can now play it to death all over again but this time on my 17 speaker+sub car stereo!

  • @Billingtonius

    Awesome, awesome, awesome!
    Love the original, love this too!
    Like so many others have said this was so influential to me back in the day (and still is now).
    Love the tasty acid in the new one, is that ni massive?
    There was a comment above asking if you would consider sharing the Ableton project? This would be a dream come true for me.
    I struggled back in the day with Quartet on the Atari ST (had a hardware cartridge and gave you 4 channels, 2 hard left, 2 hard right). I remember having to chop loops up as 1.5 secs was the limit. And no time stretching/pitch shifting. So matching different clips was a mix of key changes, experimentation and luck.
    I wondered how anyone could produce such a masterpiece.
    I'd love to have a mess about with the Ableton project.

    👏This was the greatest thing to happen to the Amiga. Kissed my first girl while this was blasting out in the background at a house party. This demo got me into music, mixing and computing. For all the high-end you can do with studio mastering, effects and everything these days it sounds too 'clean'. Though I suspect the Lo-Fi sound of the original Amiga 8bit audio hardware made JoE's sounds as good as it did!

    • @spoonwzd
      @spoonwzd  8 років тому

      I agree with you, especially with rave music - when re-sourcing the original sounds it was clear that things were much rougher back then too - even in the professional industry - and some of that charm is missing from the remake. Hopefully I've added enough new stuff to compensate!

    • @Modiford
      @Modiford 6 років тому +1

      I must give you praise for what would be 'mod 10' of the original tracklist, where it gets a bit trance-y around 19:17. That was very well recreated, between the dirty zine-wave intro and all the other instruments, excellent job done with that.

  • @avalonhamakei

    @spoonwzd: Do you think you could go back to the limitations of soundtracker/med and create something as epic as the Original J on E today?

    • @spoonwzd
      @spoonwzd  7 років тому +1

      I have considered trying to use a tracker again, but I think it would be too much of a backwards step for me especially given how much time I actually dedicate to making music these days (hardly any!) and how much I love Ableton. Certainly I've learned much more about production quality over the years so would expect that to have an impact, but I always found the 4 channels extremely limiting so it's not something I'd want to engage with again.

    • @BigKelvPark
      @BigKelvPark 7 років тому

      I agree totally but nostalgia has got the better of me. Even the simple tools such as Audacity blow the trackers of old out of the water. I've not had a play with Ableton but tried Reason and found the learning curve too steep for me. Can't teach an old dog new tricks I suppose. I'm glad you are still making music.

    • @spoonwzd
      @spoonwzd  7 років тому

      I spent a few days with the Ableton tutorials and something clicked, and this is from someone who hasn't clicked like that with audio software since the tracker days. The control you have over samples with their Warp feature is AMAZING. Ableton does way more than I use.
