I bought this piece for my conceal and carry weapon on Monday and I ran 200 rounds through it on yesterday at the range. I love it! No issues and I have no problem with the trigger as other people mention. It just doesn't bother me! Great weapon!
My first visit and it's refreshing to watch a professional that's "Business Only"! No BS and no condensing trash talk. You have a faithful follower my friend. God bless and "Get Some"!
I had one of these and it was superb. What was amazing was the recoil resistance. It felt like a 9mm because I also had a 9c as well. Had to sell due to financial reasons but I will be getting another. PS it loves 155 grain reloads at about 1250fps. Hits much harder than the 180 at 990 and even less recoil. Amazing little gun.
In 2017 I bought the newest version of this gun. It's called the S&W M&P 40 SHIELD M2.0 I got mine with the thumb Safety and it has an extra abrasive texture to the grips and has an even sweeter trigger. It shoots the 180 gr bullets better than the 165 gr. The gun is so reliable and I have had NO issues with it at all. ..For the last couple of years I have seen several videos that the 40 is dead and nothing could be further from the truth.
...my local gunshop has this gun on sale now for only $360...brand new...I asked why so low...they said they had to reduce it that much because its the MD compliant version...10/rd. mags...if its still there Friday,..I will call my landlord to tell him I will be $360 short until the following friday!
Just bought this gun after looking at tons of reviews, on all of the guns available out there .This gun shoots sweet! Hickok 45 is never wrong about anything in his reviews. I bought this gun in .40 cal and expected a kick because of the size not so in this gun. Smith and Wesson REALLY OUT DID THEMSELVES. Thanks Hickok 45 for all of your input..
@G4Patriot , I just grabbed it out of the safe. I figured it was a hair or something on the slide you were talking about. It actually IS a piece of the rail splitting off. How impressive is that! Looks like a call to Smith & Wesson is in order. I'll keep you all informed as to how that goes.
I love Smith & Wesson. They're a great producer and go back a long way to 1852. They exemplify American firepower in my opinion. Lot of great handguns domestic and abroad, but currently I like the M&P line most overall. Damn fine modern pistol.
@ffryan , Correct, nothing is perfect. I bought a new Glock 30 many years ago that had a cracked frame. It was a certain run of them where they were using a different method for implanting the serial number plate up front - something like that that was sometimes cracking the frame at the front. They send me a new one, of course. I AM a little bothered by the fact that this has to involve their metallurgy techniques or formulas, etc.? We'll see how it goes.
I purchased this firearm for an EDC and let me tell you, I trust this firearm with my life. I would not EDC if I didn't. It is by far more accurate than my G27 and the recoil on this puppy is so sinfully manageable. I was expecting a snappy kick like my G27 but man, I fired rounds out of my puppy and it felt like I was shooting a .22. Accurate, easy concealment, manageable recoil and .40. Can't go wrong with the M&P40C.
My buddy asked me to Cerakote his S&W M&P Shield .40. I have the sight removal tool, and the slide cracked on it on the left rear at the rail indention. Shocked and surprised, I went to buy him a replacement. The exact same thing happened to the replacement. Waiting on S&W to figure out what they are going to do. If they are going to repair it, I may not want to keep it. My buddys gun had maybe 50rds through it. The replacement was right out of the box. If you are going to remove the sights, put it in a vice and tap it out with a brass punch. Thanks for the videos. I always check the reviews before buying a gun, and you opinions are always right on.
As a glock fan I have to admit that a M&P running with APEX upgrades is pretty much perfect. The Apex trigger is such an improvement over the factory parts. It is a fine firearm.
I am a seasoned shooter and I also started shooting striker fired pistols with Glocks. Glocks are my comfort zone. I own some M&Ps and I experience the exact same thing, I can’t seem to shoot them with the same degree of precision as my Glocks. I instinctively shoot the M&P exactly the way I would shoot a Glock with the result being less accuracy. The pistols appear similar at first glance but the grip angles, trigger breaks, trigger safeties, sights and grip textures are very different. They are both excellent guns. Which is best will depend on the shooter.
@dwDragon88 , Yeah, it would have jumped out at me, too, when I was cleaning and lubing the gun over the last two weeks. It had to happen right there just before or during the first part of the video.
Thank you for featuring this firearm. I decided earlier today that this would be my first hand gun. I ended up picking up the full size version because it felt better in my hand and it will be a night stand/ range gun. If she works out I will pick up the compact version for carry.
The shield is an amazing gun, very accurate and fun to shoot. When you carry a gun you will learn that guns are never comfortable to carry, anything you can save in weight and size will help make the gun more bearable. The shield is perfect for ease of carry, reliability, cost, and power.
Well hickok, its Jan 2014 and March is Right around the Corner and im having to make a decision on the M&P 40c,as a fact after hanging out at my (choice)nyhow gun shop, instead of getting 1 M&P 40 c ill be buying 2 because of the hand fit (I got) hand issues and Find the 40c to be the best choice over any other weapon for Now,anyhow keep doing video's and thanx! life is good!
Great videos and impressive aim. I bought this gun used today and so far I'm loving everything about it. You're absolutely right about the feel at the slide and nothing to get in the way or caught up in clothes in need of emergency
@GaTiger11 , No, all I shot was factory ammo. I understand that other people had a crack appear in the same place, but I think it's been corrected by S&W.
I love my M&P and haven't had ny problems from it, knock on wood. I switched my mag release to the right side because it's easier for me to release it with my fingers rather than my thumb, no I am not left handed. I also like the fact that you can use the 17rd mags from the full sized M&P in the compact. I like the way you broke it down, most people read the dirrections and don't realize you can just pull the trigger and don't have to use the tool it comes with, a lot simpler and easier.
@Freedom100fan , I will let everybody know in detail. Smith & Wesson will get some publicity out of this. I hope it's good pub for them; I have owned more of their guns over the years than I could count.
Hickok45 Thank you for the awesome videos love watching you shoot and demo various hand guns. I just purchased the M&P 40 c my very first handgun purchase. It was a trade in from a state patrol officer in excellent condition and an affordable price. The shop/range was kind enough to allow me to test fire it today. It will be my EDC and home protection weapon.
Check out an HK P30 or HK45. I had a P30 in 40 cal and I've never held a gun that felt like it was personally molded for me until I held the P30. My dumbass sold it thinking I'd be able to find another one no problem later on (the 40 cals of all kinds were super affordable at the time). But now, HK P30's are near impossible to find for the price that I bought mine and they're all used. But I will say, the S&W 40c is a very ergonomical gun. I just bought one from a customer of mine for $350 with 4 mags, 3 of which have the extensions on them. Its the 1st compact pistol I've held that feels like a full sized pistol. I just ordered 2 full sized M&P 40 mags and 2 X-grip adapters. Now I'll be able to carry 15+1 in a compact pistol.
Love the videos! My M&P40 fullsize is my favorite semi auto pistol in my collection. It's also the most consistently accurate pistol I own. When I miss, it's MY fault! Keep the videos coming!
Wow! glad everything was okay during that shoot. Thats just crazy, must have been a blem during the hardning process. I am sure they will take care of it, its a defect. Well even with a cracked slide, nice shooting and good video as always, be safe and have a Merry Christmas!
I have had my M&P 40c for two years and I like it so much I bought the M&P45 and the M&P9c. If you get the .40 cal you can buy a storm lake barrel for around $140 and fire .357 sig from your .40.
I bought a second hand 3rd gen Smith & Wesson that had a trigger issue when I bought it. S & W fixed it for free and put a new set of grips on it. All within 7 days. They have the best lifetime warranty I've ever experienced. I'll forever be a S&W customer.
Nice review...I watched it because I'm heading out to the gun show in Deland, FL today to get one. I bought my son an M&P 9C for his 21st birthday and he likes it so much that I decided I had to have one...although I also have a M&P 40 Pro Series C.O.R.E. so I want to have a carry gun in the same caliber. Thanks for the video!
Happy 2014 Hickok 45,March is Right around the corner, and from my last comment as I said i'll be getting my 40c in march and im looking forward to getting mine, from the commentary's I read someone that was having some gun issue's with his the warranty and service S&W offer's make's the Gun a great purchase, and beside's all that im sure any issues with shooting will be me,I hope you're christmas was good, life's good!
I bought a M&P 9C several years ago. It has been 100% reliable through 6000+ rounds. It still handles and shoots like new. I'm upgrading to a M&P 40C as soon as I can sell my XD 45 Service.
Hi .45 enjoy your platform very much. I have the m&p .40 duty mod. Only thing I have changed are the sights. Installed the best true glow night small Dia. Pins and what a tack driver. Love everything about this weapon. Never miss fired or Jammed. Keep fire arm info coming thanks ....
its a great day AT my Compound,I love my 40c So much i'll be gettiing a crimson trace and im fortunate too because I got a S&W tech on staff locally (certified) and ill be saving repair money even this morning because im taking it in for a Deeper Cleaning (trigger Assembly issues) ive owned it since march 2014 and its a great gun, life's great at the compound.
Hickok sir.. your video's have inspired me to a new obsession with auto pistols. Although, with my recent purchase of my first being a m&p 9, i'm surprised you have not done a review or vs. of this gun, only the 'c'. The local gun shop has told me (after i bought it) the sales of the m&p have recently surpassed that of the glock. I'm sure it's on its way. Thanks!
First handgun I had was a Springfield xdm 3.8 with full size grip and .40. Sold it due to I knew I couldn't carry well when I got my CPL. Picked up a Gen 3 Glock 19C for a couple years. Carried it for about a year, but struggled with the frame printing. Currently have an XDs 4.0, but I got my hands on the M&P9c and seriously considering getting one for my primary carry
thanx 4 review sir, can ALWAYS trust it! got one, like it, single stack, completely reliable, affordable ergo friendly and no glitches so far, great for EDC......
life's good,well......................i've had mine since march this year and I love it,im new to striker fire weapons BUT it's a Big change from my revolver days, years ago,im not needing any other guns,I am thinking bout adding night sights and a apex trigger,it's a sweet carry gun and I really enjoy it,life's good!!!!!!!
Hi hickok45,I really like you're video's,im becomeing a convinced gun owner that is buying the S&W 40c,I like compact's and I saw a review from somebody mentioning you as being knowledgeable and before seeing his video,I liked you and you're approach to video's on handgun instruction, and the way you talk about gun's is enjoyable watching,to me you're like a gun instructor, anyhow im getting the M&P 40c later on in 2013 thank you!
I have this exact model. Bought it in 2010, and it's been my preferred EDC ever since. I've put thousands of rounds through it over the years, and the only issue I've had so far was after about 300 rounds in one session, the front sight slipped sideways. A gunsmith tapped it in for five bucks, and is stayed put for the last ten years. The only real inconvenience is that anybody in the two firing lanes to my right gets pelted with the ejected brass! 😅
I've been looking at this gun for several months now and it's nice to see a lot of people highlighting the same points in relation to this particular firearm. I hope to place my order in the next few weeks and it seems that it will be well worth the wait. Great detail for a first impression! Hopefully S&W will still be handing out the pinky extensions by then!
Hickok45, I apologize if someone's already mentioned this, but you shouldn't have to pull the trigger to breakdown the M&P. Lock the slide back and push that gold colored sear disconnect lever down. Then you can flip the takedown lever and the slide will come right off. Much safer that way. And yes, you can swap the mag release for a lefty. I know because I have the M&P 9 and I am a lefty. :) No additional parts needed.
Really enjoy your videos sir. Was on the fence about this firearm, despite a really good deal locally on one - you just made me decide it's a good choice! Also, you are an amazing shot. I'm always shocked how accurate you are at long range with small pistols like this.
This pistol is an imitation of the Taurus PT 640 PRO. The Taurus one has the advantage of having a single and double action; in case a miss is fired, just pull the trigger again.
I agree with you on the baseplates. I like the flat bottoms too and carry a glock 27 and tried the pinky extension and it just made the gun too bulky for my pocket and kept making it turn sideways in my pocket. I'm a big glock fan and have been reading about these M&Ps and still like the simplicity of the glock better although these are just about as simple. I like the tenifer finish on the glock as well because I've found out how durable it is. Love the videos and keep them coming.
Love your vids Sir! FYI--Got a full size .40 M&P and the take down lever does the same thing to me when field striping it... wants to go back to the up position. I hold it down with my right/grip hand thumb and remove slide with left. Army strong!
I used 1911 45 caliber for long time then I want for 40 Glock I really don't care too much about the Glock now I have MP 40 Smith & Wesson and I love the trigger and I love the gun
From what I've been reading. The M&P came factory with an 8 lb trigger pull, most people get the apex trigger kit to bring it down to a 4.5 lb pull. I haven't fired my new M&P 45, but i have dry fired it and it is a bit on the stiff side.
hey guys, I have a couple of glocks, an xd, and an m&p, along with kimbers, and colts too...........never had a sig, or a berretta, but being a safety officer for many years now, it seems that anything can have issues in one way or another, and all the major brands have done very well in the past few years.........the m&p seems to stack up with everything else so far............thankfully we have ol' Hickok45 to show us the potential of just about any pistol.
This is back up firearm. I carry w full size 40 S&W as my duty fire arm. The compact is an accurate gun. It's carried in the small of my back and causes no issues. I know you made the video in Dec. but by now you should like it. Happy shooting and enjoy. Thanks for sharing
@jwalker497 You are correct on the sear. I have the M&P 40c and you do have to disconnect the sear to strip the gun. If you dont then you will have issues trying to take the slide off. It is also stated in the manual to release the sear prior to removing the slide.
accessbob my first and only. It’s kinda bulky for me since I walk and use public transport, but it’s to the point where I am starting to forget that I have it. I don’t mind the added bulkiness knowing I got a 40.
I'm just glad that the CRACK didn't cause a major accident. Like everything in life nothing is 100% reliable. But hopefully S&W will correct the problem. Merry Christmas !
HI :) Very nice to se the M&P in action. I've got the 9L and 45 versons myself and I could't be happyer with them . Looks like you did the same thing I did when I got it. I got all my rounds down to the left, about 7-8 o'clock.. But after some try fireing with snapcaps I got the trigger figured out and now I easly pull off 17rds within a 2-3 inch group at 20 yards. Keep your vids coming man, I'm a huge fan :D Scanor, Norway.
Sorry to hear about the issue with the crack in the slide, though I have not encoutered that problem with my M&P40c. If you haven't already, you should contact S&W. I had a problem with the striker on mine, and they replaced the striker, no questions asked. They have very good customer service, I imagine they would probably replace that slide for you.
Good debugging. Glad the firearm did not have a more dangerous while testing issue. I don't think I have seen such a crack before on a slide. Amazing shooting despite a technical issue with a firearm, but amazing I should be used to watching these videos. Merry Christmas to one and all at this season.
Bought one of these from a gun show early January. Just got my Speer Gold Dot 180 grain in the mail today, so I don't have to pistol whip burlars any more. Phew. Got 1000 rounds of FMJ in the mail. thanks for doing a video of this gun @Hikock45 I wish you could have shot it better as I love shooting the M&Ps. Maybe you'll warm up to it one day. Thanks for all your videos! Thanks for everything you do to protect the 2nd Amendment and thanks for your service as a police officer. Have a great day!
I still have to give the M&P a thumbs up because it has not failed me yet. I have the full size .40 model and have thousands of rounds through it with not the slightest problem at all. There is no reason to discount the make and model at this point. I'm not a diehard Smith and Wesson fan but I know the one I'm holding right now will protect me and my family because I trust it. Hickok finished that vid with that same cracked slide by the way with no problems what so ever!
@jlott00 , You're making quite an assumption there. The frame was not cracked when i got it, or I would have noticed it. I didn't get a chance to do a video with it for a couple of weeks. I had shot a magazine through it, and I had taken it apart about three times to carefully Ballistol it and clean it, including the slide and rails. It was fine.
Thanks. We just picked ours up yesterday and haven't had a chance to fire it yet. So we'll have to see. I haven't even dry fired. It doesn't seem that big of a deal to modify it. Where we got it we get 20% off service also so that works.
Yes the mag release is reversible. I did it with my full size M&P .40. To do so, remove the slide, in the mag well you see a tall metal rod on the front strap. Remove that from it's seated position by pushing to the gun's right, and then gun's back. Then push the mag release through from left to right. Then reverse process to put it in for a right side mag release. I like the mag release being on the right side. Shooting finger pops the mag out nicely.
My oldest brother carries an M&P .40 and Ive shot it a good 100 rounds or so now, and I can tell ya, its a dream to shoot. Anyone considering buying one, should get one, they are a great handgun
The M&p has a 1911 pointing channel and not the bump, hump 8 months pregnant bulge of the glock grip. I do own 3 glocks and am happy to see the new 3rd party Aluminum 1911 style frames.
I am with all who say they will not buy the M&P. A friend at work bought an M&P 45 (full size) a couple of years ago. I liked the heft and feel and bought one. Its accuracy was OK, but the trigger pull was rough compared to my Glocks. Takedown and re-assembly seemed to involve way more drama than should be necessary. Magazine witness holes did not line up with the cartridges well at all. I sold it and learned my lesson. S&W autos have always had issues. Glocks only for me, now!!!!
thank you so much for doing the 40c! I realize you can't do a video on all gun requests but this is a personal favorite for those of us in states that restrict Glocks and XDs.
I bought this piece for my conceal and carry weapon on Monday and I ran 200 rounds through it on yesterday at the range. I love it! No issues and I have no problem with the trigger as other people mention. It just doesn't bother me! Great weapon!
Ah the good ole days...when ammo was cheap and not sold out and you can get it at any gunshop
Preach!!
@@toneytone7497 u lucky to find a damn box now
I just paid $50 for some 9mm defensive rounds 🙄
Hickok never had to pay for ammo. Federal sponsors him. Ammo shortage or not he’s got it.
Early August of 2021…. It’s starting to ease up.

the 40c is only 10rd mags. 9mm is 12 i think. there are grip extensions you can get on amazon so you can run the full-size mags in it
U can get 15rd mags from Dick's sporting Goods.
Lol that's funny
40 cal is a stopping round that would be cool to be able to shoot that round through such a small pistol

Individuals in Tennessee can sell guns to one another. Check the laws in your state, though.
@kimberHD45, Well, I'll keep everybody posted on how S&W handles this. Currently, they are in the process of sending me a shipping label.
I just picked one up last month. i was stunned how accurate it was at 50 yards. Love it.

That says a lot about the reliability of the Smith & Wesson compact the frame cracked in the gun still functions 100% that's called reliability
Says more about the quality..or lack of it.
As a glock fan I have to admit that a M&P running with APEX upgrades is pretty much perfect. The Apex trigger is such an improvement over the factory parts. It is a fine firearm.
@M14Mann , The polymer is fine; it's the steel that gave away, and the gun had under 400 rounds through it.

From a guy who has shot maybe a handful of times in his life, your shooting is very impressive. No need for excuses. Dont beat yourself up man.
Wow! glad everything was okay during that shoot.
I have the full size, now I'm interested in this one. I love the grip on the M&P series
+HornadyLoader i live near deland too and you can also go to AAA gun and pawn they have loads of these
Happy 2014 Hickok 45,March is Right around the corner, and from my last comment as I said i'll be getting my 40c in march and im looking forward to getting mine, from the commentary's I read someone that was having some gun issue's with his the warranty and service S&W offer's make's the Gun a great purchase, and beside's all that im sure any issues with shooting will be me,I hope you're christmas was good, life's good!
I have really learned much from your reviews. You keep it real. Thank you Hickock. Simple and sure.
thanks for having us out again Hickok, sorry to hear about your crack, I hope Smith takes care of you.
@Nicho2177 , We still have it, and I still like it.
Many people forget to mention the Smith Wesson warranties. In my opinion makea it the nicest feature.
thanx 4 review sir, can ALWAYS trust it! got one, like it, single stack, completely reliable, affordable ergo friendly and no glitches so far, great for EDC......
life's good,well......................i've had mine since march this year and I love it,im new to striker fire weapons BUT it's a Big change from my revolver days, years ago,im not needing any other guns,I am thinking bout adding night sights and a apex trigger,it's a sweet carry gun and I really enjoy it,life's good!!!!!!!
Hi hickok45,I really like you're video's,im becomeing a convinced gun owner that is buying the S&W 40c,I like compact's and I saw a review from somebody mentioning you as being knowledgeable and before seeing his video,I liked you and you're approach to video's on handgun instruction, and the way you talk about gun's is enjoyable watching,to me you're like a gun instructor, anyhow im getting the M&P 40c later on in 2013 thank you!
i have the 40c. love the way it handles and is very easy to conceal
@burnz2510, Sorry, I don't have time to answer you. :-)
Very true. It's a very nice weapon and smooth action compared to some I've fired. It's a really easy breakdown and clean also. I enjoy it quite well.
@pyrolowryder, No, I haven't handloaded .40 in about 10 years or more.
Just purchased m&purchased 40 and there m&p 10 mm conceal. Shot them both and fell in love. The fire like my glock 45 and my m17
Just ordered mine brand new with night sights for $289. Looking forward as I have enjoyed all my m&p products
@isisncasey , No, I detest the extensions. :-)
I'm a fan of hickok's ear protection. They work great.
I love my M&P40c. It has been my EDC for almost a year and is fantastic.
accessbob my first and only. It’s kinda bulky for me since I walk and use public transport, but it’s to the point where I am starting to forget that I have it. I don’t mind the added bulkiness knowing I got a 40.
Its my EDC & I love it! Carry the 10rd mag in it & carry two full size 15rd mags for backup, 40 rds of .40 S&W
Keep your vids coming man, I'm a huge fan :D
Scanor, Norway.
Yes Sir, I bought me a new M&P .40 compact and just love it. Thank you Sir....
Hickok45 thank you for another great video. I bought this gun used at a gun show for $260 otd.
The mag release button is fully reversible for left and right handlers on that gun the Compact. .
The M&p has a 1911 pointing channel and not the bump, hump 8 months pregnant
bulge of the glock grip. I do own 3 glocks and am happy to see the new 3rd party
Aluminum 1911 style frames.
@JimbobOMG , Nope.
hickok45 love you hickok you reach me all about firearms and how to handle them properly
thank you so much for doing the 40c! I realize you can't do a video on all gun requests but this is a personal favorite for those of us in states that restrict Glocks and XDs.
Once again great video it looked awesome and I will say this.... you being a 45 guy will absolutely fall in love with the M&P 45
Keep 'em coming!
@FirearmFanatic99 , It's a "roo" Kangaroo skin that Steve Lee brought us from Australia.
@ipaintyou1 , I would hope anybody who has a cracked slide would get the same service, a new slide, hopefully, a better one. :-)
Great reviews, Hickok. Some darn fine shooting as well. Keep 'em coming!
