Wow! I immediately bought $67 version. My girlfriend has Covid and within an hour or so I created the coolest "Hope you feel better" animation using the Adventure Scene with fish fading in and out synced to beautiful musical high points with "me" on the island sitting a computer typing "Good morning, Kitten" and then a kitten appearing on the mountain. The an idea bulb shows over my head, followed by the appearance of a piano and guitar, then me "playing" the guitar, with lyrics "Hope you feel better" and ending with "I love you" fading in between the clouds and mountains. Thank you for this tutorial! I was able to create something she will cherish. I'd be happy to share the animation with you if you like.

Thanks so much for pointing out that the $67 version is a very much slimmed down version. So the $67 version really isn't a "special offer", but more of a permanent price. That means I don't need to rush into this decision now.

Great review. I've bought it but my thinking is this. For a tiny fee, it's mine now for ever. If I use it on one paid project, that's my money back. Sure, there are big flaws, but if it's in my toolbox, I'll only use Toonly where I know I can work around them.... and where I can use it it's a very useable tool.
I've got a shedload of giveaway tools - some only get used once a year! But they earn their place.
Thanks again, Jenn, for being my go-to tester-cum-honest broker.

This is a great tutorial. I purchased everything at about $475 and it's just as bad as the basic $67 purchase. The end-product is amateurish and non-professional. I would be embarrassed to offer this to corporate clients. Once, again great tutorial, and I love your best efforts to promote #Toonly but I am canceling the annual renewal.

Great review, although the title "HONEST..." is the same phrasing that the affiliate promo videos use. So I almost didn't click on it. Nevertheless, I was surprised you liked the product as much as you did. I've used several (VideoMaker FX, Explaindio, and a few others) and I really, really don't like programs with limited flexibility or capabilities. Your review did clearly identify some (such as the very limited ways to introduce text) and other limitations (not all characters will perform all actions).
When I've encountered those limitations in other programs, I've ended up spending a huge amount of time trying to develop work-arounds to make the video acceptable. For instance, I really liked VideoMaker FX, but the templates weren't modifiable at all. So if a template consisted of six words, I had to use six; five wouldn't work. If I wanted to hold the screen for an extra second, I couldn't. That reminded me of your problem of not being able to add pauses between sections of the voice-overs. (I thought of two simple work-arounds for that: (1) Create a single voice-over with the gap built in, or (2) Include the gap either at the end of the first voice-over or at the beginning of the second. But it shouldn't be necessary to out-think or fool the program.)
Another point, and this is just my personal preference: The characters were way too cartoonish. It's okay if some are, but (as in the example you demonstrated) it's not going to be suitable for many clients. Further, the corporate clients I've worked with aren't 20-somethings with goatees. They just aren't, and so I wouldn't be able to use a lot of those characters. So, while the price is good and it's great that there aren't recurring charges, the severe limitations and the lost productivity in trying to find acceptable workarounds make this a clear "no" at any price. Again, I appreciated the review. [Note: I'm signed in on my son's UA-cam account; I'm Don, not David.]

  • @deano42

I have recently purchased Toonly as well. Here's my advice to all of you. Treat Toonly like a flat-tipped screwdriver. You can use this tool for many things, but I wouldn't try to use it for everything. What I've done is created animated scenes in Toonly, so I can get movement and lip-syncing simply. But then I take those scenes into an actual video editor program (I use Cyberlink Power Director) and stitch the scenes together in there, using transitions and zooming in for jump cuts or emphasis. I can then add special effects or PIP shots of products wherever I need to. I also lay the music track in Power Director, because that's where I'm rendering the full video.
Toonly is a screwdriver. Sure I can chisel with it, or pry out a staple or nail, or even punch a hole in the drywall if need be. But it's a screwdriver first. It will never be a wrench. There are better tools for other parts of the production. The trick is using the right tool for the right job.
Am I happy with my purchase? Yes. It does make some parts of my productions easier and quicker when I need it, and that's what I use it for. Would I ever try to make one of my videos using Toonly by itself? No. There are too many limitations, not the least of which is the inability to bring in and animate your own characters. But for $67 it has been worth the cost.

The resizing can be done once you zoom out of the viewing window. That because the Facebook logo is bigger in pixels then the working area… you must zoom out and you’ll see the resizing dots way outside of the area of work based on the actual size of the Facebook logo png. Give that a try or just upload elements smaller then 720p for better optimization. Great video btw.

Thank for this, it clarified some things in my mind as to what the software could or could not do. I bought the Enterprise version a few days ago and am disappointed at the inability to create characters and the text options are awful. Since I cannot customise the audio properly, I think I will have to record it elsewhere, snip it, and place on different layers to get better audio control. If that's possible. I have already customised by creating my own backgrounds and objects, comprising of non-animated characters, unique specific objects and a whole bunch of text bubble objects (so that I do not have to rely on their text options to get a character to speak). What a pity such options, found elsewhere and easy to use, are not offered on this platform. It would have been an incredibly powerful, no-brainer to buy software otherwise.

@@JennJager Thank you.... I’ve watched your Create Studio review. Many thanks for your personal answer.
I’m an English teacher (English as an additional language), hounded into online by the plague. I’m researching what’s described as the ‘flipped classroom’ (which is where the chalk and talk element in teaching is given prior to the lesson.... and the lesson is devoted to - effectively - homework or workshop activities). The ‘flipped classroom’ isn’t entirely ideal for language teaching; it’s better suited to subjects where there’s a large element of explanation or narration... the sciences, history, literature.
I’ve bought the full version of Doodly... and I’ve taken out a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. I have a new gaming laptop coming on Wednesday... with 32Gb RAM (though I primarily use Apple products, especially iPad Pro).
I’m thinking to create short quasi-explainer videos, quasi-practical exemplar videos (modelling grammatical structures, pronunciation, etc).
Your videos are outstanding, particularly your to-camera screen presence. I’m full of admiration!
I notice you refer to the viewer in the plural as ‘guys’ (i.e. in the plural). I’m just wondering whether you have a clear image of who your target viewer is. YT videos are usually watched solo; it’s rarely a group experience, unlike cinema or theatre. Do you think that maybe your exceptional warm and engaging onscreen presence might be enhanced by dropping any reference to the viewer - whether singular or plural? Just a thought!
Thanks again for your help and your wonderful videos. (I’m working my way through them).

I am new to toonly. Thank you for your review. I made a 4 scene video. Before I clicked save my computer went into a white screen and I could not see any of my work. I lost all 4 scenes. I had to redo it all. I saved along the way just in case that happened again and it did. Only this time my screen went black a couple times. When it came back on it only played my voiceover and no picture was on the screen. I logged out and back in then it worked. Have any of you experienced this?

    Awesome video review. Quick questions.
How many transitions does Toonly have?
Have you also reviewed Vidello Create, if yes please share the link and also share which one is better between Toonly and Create.

Great tutorial. Thanks. You mentioned VideoScribe. How would you compare both and would Toonlyy, overall, be better? Thank you!!

I've always used Videoscribe, but I was looking at Toonly as an alternative. Trying to decide whether to change platform or just outsource to somebody on Fiverr

It’s tough. What I like about Powtoon is that you can make so many different types of videos, like whiteboard animations, cartoons and infographics but it is much more expensive than Toonly or Doodly. If it’s worth it to you, I would spend the money for Powtoon.

Tks for your review Jenn. Good appraiser of the $67 -for me it is €61- software package. The last word ‘subscribe’ in your sample video is misspelled.

I know! UA-cam doesn't let you go back and fix it.

Thanks ! I saved 67$ ! I work on FCPX... and was wondering if it could be useful. Now I am sure, with so little controls, I don't want to buy this.

Thank you for the great review! I would like to ask if you have used the enterprised version I am not sure how much better it is than the basic version since it requires you pay around 97 dollars more, it would be great if you could review that version which helps me with my decision whether to get the enterprise version or not. Thank you!

This software is useless. Read their End User Agreement -- you are not allowed to actually make videos unless you purchase the $97 upsell!
