Audi RS5 vs Lexus RC F | better than a BMW M4 or Mercedes-AMG C63? | Autocar

- Which is better, then? The Audi RS5 or the Lexus RC F? Conventional thinking says neither, and that you buy a BMW M4 or Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe instead. Subscribe now: smarturl.it/aut...
But what if you don't want to be conventional? The RS5 and RC F are both brawny, four-hundred-and-something, four-seat coupes.
Both have performance to spare but both go about their business in very different ways. The RC F is a rear-drive car with a 5.0-litre, naturally aspirated V8. The RS5 is the epitome of downsizing, featuring a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6, which drives through a quattro four wheel-drive system.
We put the two alternatives to the mainstream to the test, to see which comes out on top.

LOL, talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't "Oh, it isn't turbo charged! How disappointing!"... "Oh, it's turbo charged, how disappointing!"
Matthew Sharpe
Right? I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed.
Also, I don't get why everyone seems to think turbos are a bad thing, not everything has to be a N/A V8.
I get why people like N/A cars, but I've fallen for turbos since owning my current car - and performance wise it'll destroy any factory V8 worth less than 6 figures.
In a nutshell,
RS5 & RC F for daily commute
M4 & C63 S for trackdays
山内淳カイル perfect 👌
Audi said when the RS5 came out that they want it to be a fast, comfortable cruiser, not a more sports orientated car like the M4. As this review says, they absolutely nailed that. The natural comparison to the M4 means people expect the RS5 to be something that it's not, and that's unfair. Audi RS models are supposed to be comfortable and very fast. They might not be as exciting down a twisty road or round a track as an M car or AMG, given that they're all AWD, but they're faster in the real world. And that's where most people drive their cars, not on the track.
BBDSmint Well said, finally brought some sense into the constant fights between brand fans.
Faster in real world? Where on highway? No. On a twisty road perhaps? Nope(altho this one depends on the drivers).
in the real world, when your driving your AMG on the highway and a rs5 pulls up and wants to race, no competition, amg wins every time. but from a dig, Audi wins cause of the AWD, but from a roll, 10/10 AMG wins.
To save viewers' ten minutes or so of their lives, the conclusion is that they didn't particularly like either of them. The two journalists approach this review with the energy and enthusiasm of returnees from a stag weekend in Chernobyl. The plump bearded one sits in the RS5 with the demeanour of a plumber facing a floater. The thin one bangs on about Twitter. Neither have any real enthusiasm for the cars or it would seem, their jobs. No spark. No insight. Mr Beard says he's got a bit of a problem with Audi Sport in general, which presumably means he doesn't like the R8 v10 plus or the RS6 Avant or the RS7 for that matter. Strange chap. The thin one .. something else about Twitter. Tedious, uninteresting, dull. Nothing gained, just endless cliches that have been said countless times.
Lmao @ the plump one. Excellent summary of the foolishness we saw here. I've never seen such unappreciative reviewers ever
Read my mind. I was like: “WTF is this guy saying about the RS5?” Both cars are amazing but the RS5 is a beast.
Mr. Beard didn't like putting the car in dynamic mode, but he complained it doesn't have the performance of other cars like the M4. The car is a complete beast in dynamic mode. These 2 don't really seem like performance oriented drivers so BMW or Merc is probably best for them.
David Darby i
Infinitely better than the review itself
Notice when they did exhaust comparison , they really didn't clarify which sounded better even though they were basically saying the Lexus. Then they said the Lexus was heavy but didn't mention the Audi was 60 pounds lighter so they both are heavy lol. Japanese brands get a lot of hate. Strange
I absolutely *LOVE* this green on that Audi.
Probably one of the most beautiful Colours i have ever seen on any Car.
The RS5 just looks soooooooooooooooooooooooooo good! I'm in love
RC F is a beautiful car especially when you see one in person.
Time for a trip to Specsavers for you
Gary Kostik yeah and 10 years behind rs5 and m3
both the RS5 and M3 wont last 10 years LOL
Hideous car. Beautiful cars for me are F-Type, E-Type, Aston Martins 4e
I've never seen one in my life that's y wen i start my job hopefully by this week I am guna save and by the lexus rc200t or rc300h it's a rare car I see german cars everywhere it's boring
Rcf look amazing in my op.
Hang on, RC F slated for being 'a bit of a porker' in this review, but it's only 35kg heavier than the RS5. Seems RS5 is a bit of a porker too, but no mention of that. Strange...
Flat Eric BULLSHIT! why only Audi fans tells the true... Fuckn complexes of the other fans... RS5 weights 1650kg so it's almost 150 kg lighter and that's quite a bit... And Audi have AWD system that adds 100kg... Even old RS5 was lighter than this fat Lexus.
TheEryk03 not according to the stats in the stats in this video...
The RCF is 1836kg compared to the Audi's 1654kg. So yeah I'd say it'd feel like "a bit of a porker". Idk where you got 35 kg from, I mean the first gen RS5 weighed 1725kg, and none of these 3 figures have a difference of 35 so I'm confused.
This Lexus has the wheelbase of IS C which is reinforced for better rigidity... that is where weight comes from
Flat Eric 👆👆👆american yeah?
Bought a 2019 RS5 a few months ago and it's amazing 👏🏻
That Lexus will still be on the road 15 years plus from now as reliable as the day as it was made along with most of it's residual value. Can't say that for any Audi or German car. That's one thing these reviews ALWAYS fail to mention -- long term practicality and reliability.
Maybe because sports cars are inherently not a practical type of purchase? For the second hand market, those things matter - but what's the likelihood of someone who purchases one of these or an M4 still having it in 15 years? They'll likely have moved on to a new vehicle in 5 years or so...
Soren Lausen because they don't have 15 years to test the car? The rcf has a performance v8 engine and I doubt it will last
Soren Lausen A performance Lexus might, might have a reliability advantage over that times but don't carry any practicality advantage and their residual will not be any better after 15 years at the same mileage
Residual value?!? Lexus?!? You're kidding me. Look up a 3 year old RS5 vs a 3 year old Lexus RCF and tell me what has held its residuals better!!!
Brandon Le Tran Not where I'm from they don't, they deprecate just as fast as the German cars in most cases.
Lexus RC F.
These are GT cars that have some sports car characteristics. You're surrounded by comfortable materials and can drive them every day. They are in the completely different category than an M4. An M4 is a track weapon, you will feel every bump is the road, be terrified to take it down a B road out of fear of blowing a strut, and the interior materials are sub par. The M4 is meant to compete with a Cayman GTS, so and so forth. I truly do not believe neither the RS5 nor the RCF were aiming to create direct competition for the M4 through performance figures/numbers, they wanted to offer drivers an alternative option to enjoy a fast car.
-RCF owner :)
The answer is the c63...Best on the road and the best interior...
..has to be said that i'd rather be in the m4s interior than the rs5...
Bud Chronic A c63 also holds its value far worse than all of the other cars as well. Mercedes AMG cars are notorious for tanking in value, we'll see how well their oil return lines hold up over the next 3-4years. And if you're spending the money for the c63S at that price point my attention turns to Porsche
Eh no the M4/M3 are very quick but they are not track cars despite what bmw would market them as, very fast gt cars definitely- but not the lightweight, best steering feel, precision machines they used to be. Bmw has traded what truly made them feel special for sales/performance numbers.
tomtom255 I won't disagree with your statement about BMW's M division becoming a bit soft over the years, but an M3 and an M4 are nowhere near as comfortable as an RCF or RS5, I've driven all of them and for daily use an M4/3 are lacking when it comes to interior. I will admit that the C63 takes the cake for interior, but I'd put the RCF at a close second in terms of ride comfort and interior, plus you still get a V8. Yes, you can take an RCF or RS5 to the track, but honestly, those cars are too heavy for that and unless you have 3k to burn on new pads and rear tires, an M car makes the most sense. They're soft yes, but at the end of the day, that's your best option for track/street use. Save the GT category for the M5/6. I count Bimmer out of this contest. For the price, it's either RCF, RS5, or a base model C63, I would dare say even a fully spec'd Q60 S may have a fighting chance (if they make an IPL edition)
AnDuKn0Thi5MaN what you said is the complete opposite of actual reality. My rs4 b8 is the most uncomfortable car I've ever owned
I love the Lexus RCF
Love that British racing green looking colour
The RCF is not ugly. It looks angry and aggressive it really looks badass. Sounds badass too. Lots of people love the way the RCF looks only people following other ppl jump on the bandwagon and talk bullshit about it looks
Love both these cars.
I have just brought a 2018 RS5 over an M4 competition. Both cars are amazing. But for me, I wanted the safety and security of AWD, plus the instant power put down without drama. I had a BMW 330 beforehand and had scared myself a few times on a damp roundabout or tightening bend, etc. when the back decides to step out. It might be fun for some, but I don't want that anymore, thanks!
That Lexus is beautiful.
Audi = boring
AUDI never boring, that Lexus is overprice junk
@@ushittyuglylc5037 how can a Lexus be junk?
It'll outlast the Audi. So technically you're calling the Audi junk then. It is inferior
@@bassicuk1986 if you're a cars nut, you should know that Lexus RC-F has been a total FLOP like a GS model 😂😂😂Lexus can't made good cool car like AUDI did in RS LOL
@@ushittyuglylc5037 do you not know what a Lexus LFA is.....................
An Audi R8 doesn't even closely compare l!!!!!
@@bassicuk1986 i KNOW , its a very good but overprice, cost 600+in my country, i can't afford it 😁, any way good to chat with you, hv a good evening 👍👍
the rs5 looks so good in the green
people talking shit about these cars probably drive a prius
after 20 years of driving Audi i switched to Lexus and never looked back ! much better long term reliability.. The RC-F has not a old stinky V8 at all....it runs in lower rpm and normal mode in Atkinson cyclus and some drivers get out 35-38mpg with that ! It has port+direct injection to prevent carbon build up. The gearbox is an old school 8speed torque converter ,yes, but i swear it will hold much longer than a DCT which cost a fortune when somethings goes bad !
I think the lexus looks special, for some thats a good thing, others might find it not.. I guess lexus is trying to create more of a sporty GT line-up. I think the lexus group is doing a wonderfull job, especially with the new LC500
Dan must be the only car journalist ever to like the trackpad on the Lexus infotainment system.
Autocar Dan seems a lot more relaxed and informal than Evo Dan. This is a better Dan IMO!
Great to see the Green color!!
Those of us who have owned a 4WD sports car , are more so than not , converts.Especially those who are in wet winter climates, they are light years faster in the wet. What you lose in steering feel, you gain in exist corner acceleration. In day to day driving the ease of performance access in all driving conditions.........wins 4 me
That audis engine note I think it's the best sounding turbo 6 cyl in it's class
I want both. But I would side with RC just because it's V8. I don't care about all other performance numbers. The car offers all you want for daily driving.
I REALLY enjoyed the way this film was put together. I watched it all at once, because there was always something happening. Very good.
I don't get the concluding remarks. They guy in the rcf says you can drive the rs5 harder and rs5 guy says you get more out of the rcf...
RC-F is a good looking car and better when it's tuned .
the lexus is a lot better in real live than you guys might think. and it's nit slow at all. you also get that legendary reliability you just don't get with the germans. i'll admit i would take the c63, but right after that i'd take the lexus. i way cooler than the others. and if you actually look under the car or at the suspetion you'll know that you get a lot more car for your money. there's just more put into. it really deserves more respect than i get's
That green Audi is so sweet. I am a huge fan of the Lexus, but I might have to go Audi, so many options, so much detail. Thank you.
The sound of the noise that the RS5 conjure's picture's of a blown sub-woofer in my 1st attempt of public dis-obedience......distortion on the run off doesn't bring precision to mind. Cheer's & Thanx
These 2 are some o the best car reviewers the game has to offer without a doubt. More of them please!
Will buy the RS5 in a heartbeat. The combination of the everyday usability and the occasional fun is what I want in a car. Autocar has been bashing Audi over the years anyway. Imagine the RS5 badged as a Jaguar and they will say it's the best thing since slice bread
Yeah the lexus will last 20 years the rs6 wouldnt last 10 good luck paying money on the rs5 if u get one
AMG c63s>M4>RCF>RS5
I actually like to drive my cars. Not sit in a garage waiting room while they're being fixed. So lexus for me.
ATS-V will be in the conversation also
Review the goddamn 2017 Mercedes-AMG c63 for gods sake. It's a wonderful car, makes a godly noise, for a Biturbo, and is on par with the m4. You mention how interesting it is to drive and how it has more fire in it's belly over that Audi and Lexus- Show us the money
The RC-F has the worse dynamics but the best engine. Lexus trades performance for emotional thrills.
The RS5 performs the best but the engine is a major letdown. Audi traded personality for outright speed.
That green looks pretty good on the RS5. I also love those intakes on the wheel arches. Nice spec this particular car.
My alternative alternative alternative would be the ATS-V coupe with a manual, awesome car!!
Why is it when production cars come stock ricer its fine. That hood for example, classic ricer carbon mod.
For 2020 RCF, engine is still 2UR-GSE even no retrofit for multi media system. But "SNOW" button have shifted to "LAUNCH".
dropping the v8 in the audi, imo BIIIIG MISTAKE
JOSEPH GERBINO I disagree to a point, yes they sound good, but they where heavy and as we know audi is retarded and mount the engine infront of the axel so it gets really nose heavy, they still mounted it the same but now its lighter
IDK man.. a RS5 should have a V8 the 6 sounds like kittens are in the engine bay..
Dan looks like Chris Martin from Coldplay
Interesting video style, which was informative and enjoyable to watch...good job!
Seems to be they had the reviewers in the wrong cars for the filming. My feeling is that Dan would have loved to be bashing around in the supersonic RS5 on film and actually exploiting it's capabilities. It's sporting credentials are obviously in a slightly different league to the Lexus.
Dan i totally agree with yiou on the RCF' look.i enjoy the madness of it. Several months later.
I'm 100% convinced Audi will release a "RS5 performance" variant!
6 years too late and ‘competition’ instead. Missed opportunity really.
@@baraataleb2383 6 years later with a wrong name too 😂
Get the M4 with M performance exhaust. End of story 👍🏼
Dan found some personality! Good work!
Wonderful road... Beautiful landscape... Enjoyable cars...
Well done, boys !
Prosser and Sutcliffe have swapped working shifts.
Great comparison Video and I would choose the RS5
Lexus with the NA V8 of course !
Why build a daily driver that is amazing on the track? 99% of the time, money, usage are on public roads. The RS5 is the best car in this group. M4 also sucks compared to a GT4. M4 is still a a daily driver, not a track car.
Both are definitely not sports cars. They are high performance heavy weight cruisers. A sports car is light, agile and raw.
I was going to say the first thing they say is the Audi cabin is good but I much prefer the Lexus interior. It's lovely :)
What is up with manufacturers giving the press cars in bizarre colors? I recall Lexus had this car in orange a few years back, BMW showed off the M4 in a strange yellow/green, and now Audi decides to try a British racing green?
Owned an rs5 and it is disgusting fast, if u drive like u stole it, its crazy. It did blow up however.
Cut down the weight issue in the RCF then you'll have a monster in your hand...
Ok, so the reviewer says that there is little noticeable difference between the Drive select modes in the Audi. I have been lucky enough to "test drive" the pre-facelift RS3 and the facelifted RS7 for days, both really good cars for their respectable purposes. And while I am just an average driver (albeit a sporty one :)) - and not a pro reviewer -, I could feel noticeable difference in the setup of the car between Comfort and Dynamic. I think this is what many people love about their new-gen RS cars. I know I will love it when mine arrives. One minute you can give a lift to the grandmother troubled by osteoporosis without risking a fracture(Comfort) and the next you outrun 98% of all cars in daily traffic if you need or want to with little body role outside the city (Dynamic). Just to highlight my point AND the fact that Audi polarizes car people, here is a citation from an EVO review of the new RS5: "However, choose the Dynamic setting and the RS5 feels more focused. The ride takes on an instantly harder edge, weight is added to the steering, the engine gets louder and throttle response is sharpened. It’s all very promising." So unless all of you have the same standards in everyday life (and surely all of the 300 people commenting cannot have that) for everything, including driving, there is little point in arguing. If you want to get a whiplash when accelerating and travel in kneepads, but in a way that rewards your inner-child and makes everyone know something seriously angry is coming, get the Merc. If you want to play a 5-year-old (sorry, could not resist) and have no fixed daily job or family and want to meet up with car guys who would shun you if you chose Audi over BMW, of course get the M4. If you, like me, need to travel the city for meetings and want to have a near-supercar-performance cruiser with a significantly louder exhaust (ok, not a V8, so?) that, again, 98% of the traffic, easily switchable to a comfy coupe, get the RS5. My take...
Out of these two the Audi, overall I'd take an M4, even if the steering is a bit dodgy
Daniel Ohio get the cs, they said they fixed it
Yeah I've heard the CS is basically what the M4 was always supposed to be. I think the M4 is such a handsome, menacing looking car that deserved a better sounding engine and better steering
I just got the m4 after driving c63 and rc f (we don't have RS 5 in US yet). The m4 is nice
Just out of interest what was it that made you choose the M4 over the Merc?
I agree the M4 ZCP still king in this segment
The Giulia QV is very good daily driver as well in my opinion.
I had the opportunity to drive a F80 M3, AMG C63 and a Giulia QV. The Giulia was the best daily. Both best damping in Comfort and the quitest. In the sporty settings, entertaining, unique Sound and felt agile. But I am not a big fan of its elec. Diff. Not tail happy enough for my taste. Not really predictable. M3 is the most involving Car, the most precise and the Car that felt most like a sportscar. Quite stiff but not really uncomfortable at the same time. Very tail happy. Engine with no turbolag in sport+. Very impressive engeneering. C63 is the most felt the most powerful. Great Soundtrack. Goes like hell in a straight line. Corners good too but only 9/10. At the very limlit it felt heavy, not that precise like the M3. Gearbox not compareable to the others. Slower. Not really a sports car like gearbox. The limit sould be touched carefully with C63. Grip stops immediately, has more of it as i expected, but when the is no grip left it starts sliding and you shoult be used to opposite lock😉.
These were my personal Impressions.
Maybe it is helpful for somebody.
By the way...i would choose an M3. Or an M2😁
Switches for this and that drive thingy on both of them. I've got an Audi A6 wagon in the garage but I always go to my '16 Mazda MX5. An analog car for driving.
Sounds like they are just rambling without making a solid case for either car
Why would you buy any of these, when you can a Lady Niva for 1/100th of the price?
minibus1351 so tru
minibus1351 and the lada is RWD. Your move Audi #checkmate
David C true! And it handle like M4/C63! No traction at all!
Would love to see these guys test the Cadillac ATS V and hear there opinion. The interior is rubbish but the driving is bliss.
I wish the RS5 had more rear-wheel bias, would be much less understeer-y and much more fun to drive, because it is one hell of a sexy car!!!
Marc Saidy my dad owns an s6 and all s and rs models have torque vectoring which believe me in person it reslly doesnt feel understeery
Marc Saidy The story of every RS Audi ever
Marc Saidy also had to to do with the engines always hanging so far in front to increase interior spacing
Giant Tacos every car understeer even F1 car! Modern Audis are less understeer than they competition but Audis doesn't swipe the rear like crazy so by idiots it means that AUDIs understeer...
Arend Rossouw and in the same time those Audis have the same weight distribution like Mercedes 4matic.
21:9 !!!! LOVE IT!!!!
No brainer here
I had German cars.
Lived in Lousy service centers
Lexus all the way
not sure what i got out of watching that video?????
So, in short. The lexus is probably great but you can't tell on normal roads and we didn't take it to the track, and the Audi is probably not great on track even though we didn't take it to the track, but at least we know the Audi is faster in a straight line. The Audi is a relaxed GT car, the Lexus is probably a good sports car, and just get an M4/C63/718/second-hand 911 for a good sports car.
"I'm not convinced it's a sports car". Of course it's not a sports car or even sporty car.
It's an Audi, with AWD, and the entire engine hanging in front of the front axle. It's a fast secure personal transport.
Wasn't Dan at EVO? How has every major auto journalist on UA-cam swapped channels within the last month?!
I'm not sure that the RC F is a sports car itself since it doesn't seem that natural on the track..
Its quite sad... I had an RS5 on order... drove it... fell asleep... drove the new RS3 sedan, fell in love... changed my order.
How can Audi make a faster, more aggressive entry level RS, than its more expensive and supposedly more "RS" big brother?
Where was this filmed? Looks epic. Any help with road names appreciated.
Both cars are lacking and cost way too much. If you want a complete proper car that is worth the money then get an AMG.
Audi RS5. Not close for me. German vs Japanise engineering... c'mon now
Rc-f is looks nice, especially if you tune it. It doesnt look hideous. For me Audio looks a little bland
All things being equal, if you replaced the automatic transmission in the RS5 with a manual, would the experience improve dramatically?
just give me the M4. all the others can wait
If you think the RC F is hideous then i don't know what to say to you.
They havent fixed any issues that the RS5 had in the past It is still Nose heavy, weight distribution is 60/40. It still still understeers and does not have impressive exhaust sound.
Hideous...? It looks original!
The only thing i like about the RS5 is the perfected quattro system.otherwise the the RCF does it for me.
Idk everyone says Audis are time bombs I don't know if I could trust it. I don't like the Lexus either as much.. I'm still gonna take the BMW.
if you complain about torque in car with a NA engine, you dont know how to downshift i reckon....
"Buy Audi or die"---- Hello,I am Audiwan Kenobi and I approve this message.
Lexus looks like its been in an accident and someone can't afford to paint the new bonnet.
Autocar car reviews are getting boring, compared to the others which are entertaining.
Neither of these are sports cars. They're luxury gt cars. Gt86's and miatas are sports cars. Don't get confused. Speed doesn't equal sport
That green is soooo tasteful
RS5 the best in class!
If I had the money to buy a C63 there really would be no other reason to look at the competition. Unless you live in area with terrible weather and need AWD( RS5). I would not buy a RCF ever lol but the NA V8 is a nice touch. I might look at an M3/M4 depending on the price.
That audi is so so so beautiful
