10 DRUMMERS I BET YOU DON'T KNOW? (but should)
For every "name" drummer out there, there are hundreds of other drummers working hard, doing their work, day in and day out...sometimes influencing entire generations of drummers while flying under the radar of most drummers. Here's a list of 10 drummers I bet most of you don't know but I think you should.

Who are the drummers you feel everyone should know about? Put them in the comments!
Dominic Howard from Muse
Aaron Commess might be one. Basically taught me ghost notes when I was a kid as the drummer for Spin Doctors, and now he plays a lot of jazz out of NYC.
Yoni Madar
Camille Bigault
Arthur Hnatek, Baard Kolstad
Yoyoka
A drummer in the modern world that EVERYBODY should know is the one and only ARIC IMPROTA, what ever you watch from him its completely inspirational.
Two names I’ll throw out are Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt, Angels & Airwaves, now Alkaline Trio) and Isaac Teal (Tauk). I love the energy and uniqueness that Atom brings to his grooves and I really love Isaac’s stick work on the hi hats.
Love Tauk. Great band that deserves much wider attention.
Brian Tichy should get more recognition in my opinion, amazing drummer...
Another drummer that deserves to be on this list is Andy Newmark. He has an extensive list of recordings with artists from Sly and the Family Stone to Roxy Music to John Lennon and many many more.
Love seeing all the talent that we all know and love, but especially the talent that we should know about going forward. So much to see out there, and you gotta stick your neck out to see it!
There truly is!
@@StephenTaylorDrums Yeah!
Great selections ! Drummers are lucky to have so many models to learned from.
Dave King is an amazing human being and all around pro. I have had the pleasure of being a tech on a couple of stages he played when he was with Julian (lodge is how he said it)… Has amazing dynamic and touch on a drum kit. Kinda reminds me of Carter McClean but a little more progressive. So glad you featured him on this video!!!
Everyone's heard Aaron Sterling, they just don't know it. Dudes on everything it seems. Great drummer, great drum sound.
Chris Turner is a BEAST. Everybody should know him
My favorite drummer I was privileged to work with was Jeff PORCARO. Miss him!
Legend!
The 🐐
Great to bring attention to musical talent ! Nice
thank you so much for this, Stephen, and for all the support over the years! means a ton. 🥁🙌🏼
You know I love your voice on the drums and what you do! Stay safe on the road
Steve Jansen from Japan. His beats for Still Life in Mobile Homes, Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Swing are amazing.
Not to mention, his work with his brother David Sylvian as well his former Japan band mates.
Love the variety of folks you chose to highlight here.
I actually had a hard time narrowing it down haha
Thanks for the shout-outs to Topper Headen and Johnny V.!!! Love those two.
Two women who inspire me are Terri Lyne Carrington and Senri Kawaguchi...although I can't watch her right before practicing because she can be intimidating.
Rob ‘beatdown’ Brown is also a phenomenal player, though his biggest contribution to the community is as an instructor.
That's awesome!!
Check out Band-Maid and their amazing drummer Akane Hirose.... you will be blown away
Agreed!
Soooo many great drummers out there! Will definitely check out these folks. And it's always interesting to figure out what the threshold is between "known" and "unknown" with drummers. Two drummers I've been following for a while that are worth mentioning (at the risk of people saying "of course everyone knows him"):
-Nashville session superstar and long-time Reba drummer Tommy Harden
-Lion King (and Charlie Hunter and...) drummer Carter McClean, whose playing just oozes cool. Definitely worth an instagram follow.
Caleb Crosby is a cat down in Nashville there that doesn’t get enough recognition for his groove, personality, and taste. His main gig is with Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown (also underrated and has toured with AC/DC, GNR, Aerosmith, STP. etc), but has played or toured with with Dolly’s newest rock project, Lennon Stella and Matt Mahr, Anne Wilson, countless awards show, and has been on loads of different sessions. Phenomenal educator too and an absolute sweetheart
My favourite drummer at present - Akane Hirose from Band-Maid
Amazing video!!! Ty!
Thanks!
Ash Soan, UK - Legend
Yes!
At the moment I'm loving El Estepario Siberiano for his one handed drumming and speed. Might not be everyone's cup of tea tho/
Per Lindvall. Sweden. Played with many many. Extreme pocket
Cool seeing Mark Stepro on this list! I think we were at the same Ben Kweller show in Cleveland...the next tour he was the drummer!
He's such an incredibly nice and knowledgeable guy
I was taught to learn scottish drumming in high school and african rhythm and indian stuff of course; world drumming is strange, fun for some time. Drummers at the pop level are all quite easy to play, it's a vibe check not a skill/labor check. I once knew a kid named matt that lived where I lived and only met him a couple of times and he went on to play with bob marley's son on tour with dave matthews band which surprised me. This was the myspace days and seeing him going from being the skinny kid in the bar billiards hall to pictures of him on tour all full in the legs and hanging with famous people was weird. I liked seeing aaron gillespie at warped tour and found an appreciation for his ability to sing and play at the same time. my friend rachel from high school grew up with their live sound engineer which was the only reason I was at the show because she drove us and a friend of hers to the gorge to see the festival shows. I dont like heavy metal but I've been to warped tour three times in the past and compared to sasquatch I'd say there are a lot of hardcore drum obsessed people in hard rock bands. the singing sucks but the players are passionate. trendy shows have much better lyrics and songs but sometimes the drums and experience of music is good for being simple; it's a cash in cash out society and pop music always makes more doing less. I'd like to think people should know me but I don't own a camera and tend to not provide myself with the proper platform to do that. I did once think about trying out for the guitar center drumoff but when I went there all the slots were already filled for my location. I like watching rdavidr and perhaps it was sad that you didn't include him because he's a cool drummer. Also I watch Brooke C on youtube. I do'nt really care about the competitive nature of drumming anymore. If you want to look up my old teacher his name is Art Noble. There was a small article about him in a drum magazine, can't remember what the magazine was called drum! or drumming, just not modern drummer because that one is only for the cliche famous acts. I used to subscribe to both drum! and modern drummer when I was a kid for a short while. I didn't keep any of those though. I even went online and bought a copy of the magazine my teacher said he was in back a long time ago and sure enough he was in there.
a preview of each drummer would have been a cool addition...
Akhamie music. Former navy concert drummer ! Kami has chops inside chops and is the go to for pocket queen.
Akhamie is pure inspiration.
I'll check them out
John Stanier from Helmet and Sean Kinney from Alice In Chains are underrated
Abe Cunningham of Deftones is an amazing drummer and verry underrated imo.
chris turner is just on another level of drumming, it’s inane
It really is
Yosai Haruna, from Lovebites.
Look Up Marco Pitruzzella. That's My Mentor/ Inspiration To Play Like He Does.
I'll check him out
I was wondering if you would be including the best drummer and at #10 Dave King?
Amazing stuff.
He's so great
Shawn Pelton!
I only knew Topper Headon!
It's really difficult to make it as a pro drummer now. Drum magazines are not helping when they keep featuring the same few drummers in each issue. Some drummers that need more press, get a tiny little blurb article.
So cool that you're giving Johnny V. props.
He's just a legend in my mind
@@StephenTaylorDrums you should check out Brian Blade's album Mama Rosa which is his "singer-songwriter" album. Mr. Blade gets to name-check Johnny V. in one of his songs. :D
and you play no clips of them actually drumming with sound...amazing
First one of this style I've done...patience. the next will be better.
would really love to know your thoughts on El Estepario Siberiano :)
He said drummers not UA-camrs
Well @@billakis2000 he played in a few bands and like Stephen now he makes UA-cam content and covers with his twist on it, so tell me what is your definition on what a drummer is?
His main thing is you tube content. As a drummer he might have some impressive skills for mostly social media entertainment but as a musician well i don't think he is someone worth noting. His covers are pretty bad@@Starblade98
How could you miss Sepultures drummer Eloy Cassagrande?
John Wright from NoMeansNo deserves respect and discussion....his technique and originality blows these other drummers out of the water.
Jeremy Dutton is so slept on. Like Justin brown but even crazier.
Me! Played with 0 famous artists, made 0 recordings. Properly sh*t in the pocket. Only played about 12 gigs in my life. Can't play Rosanna. Don't have my own kit, I rely on others. My feet hurt and I'm too old to play hard (My ears start ringing). I'll never play like Vinnie Colaiuta, but I'm having fun! Look out for me nowhere 😂
Jaki Liebezeit!
Gavin Harrison and felix lehrmann
Francois.
Fran-choice?
Fran-swah!
Well, you know of Emmanuelle Caplette...
Such a great player and teacher!
@@StephenTaylorDrums I am a pianist, so I do not compete... but I've always wondered whether she is viewed by the drumming community as too 'detached' or too technical. Two things are certain : she is passionate, and in my view, she has earned her success.
@@StephenTaylorDrums By the way, I love your channel.
Never heard of them.
Yep, that was the point 😁 Go check them out...all great players!
John paul Gaster?
Hello 🎉
What up!
Sounded a bit like reading the „about“ section on a Talent agencies website. Ya know, just didn’t click with me. Nothing wrong with that, just personal preference.
Knew style of video...still working on my delivery. Thanks for the feedback!
Girl in the thumbnail is Britney Bowman, right?
Indeed
Joey Jordinson was a great drummer please talk about him
GOAT right there!
No Marcus Gilmore?
Yoni Madar! Yoni Madar! Yoni Madar!
Dude is a beast
@@StephenTaylorDrums absolutely! For my opinion is he the most musically drummer I have ever noticed. I'm a drummer myself and for that I have a complex POV of drumming. And so have you...and this guy....no words!
Sonny Emory all day
Yes!
