Henley needed to smoke more weed, then it would have made sense. But who cares, he crested with Boys of Summer which is really Mike Campbell's song anyway. Fuck it.
They suck. All they did was rip off Gene Clark, Gosdin Brothers, The Byrds/Burrito Brothers etc. They got lucky with the early 70s coked out peaceful, greedy feeling.
Hey man, I don't know anything about Don Henley or Glenn Frey and what kind of people they are but they are to my mind supremely talented songwriters. You mention here One of these nights and Hotel California. Those two albums alone could've cemented their place in the world of rock/country rock. Along with Fleetwood Mac's Rumors and their previous album Fleetwood Mac I cannot really count many groups of their time with two consecutive masterpieces. The Eagles get a lot of unfair criticism I think and don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of Pavement and of many 'more alternative' bands too...
@@JA-rc2jp I have listened to Graham Parsons and like some of his music a lot...Hickory Wind is probably my favorite. I can see the development of course to early Eagles but the Eagles are their own thing eventually and especially on One of These Nights and Hotel California. I believe Hotel California is one of the best albums ever made bar none. Even if some of the Eagles have been selfish or egotistical personally...so what; their creativity stands on its own merits, I think.
@@DonovanFarley I think there is something to be said for your unstated idea that popularity (commercial success) does not equal artistic merit but in the Eagle's case, look at that greatest hits album- beautifully crafted country-ish songs, that sold a boatload. I just happen to like the music and the musicianship arguably is polished to the extent that all passion and imperfection is wrung out of it but okay but still to me most of the Eagle's music (or at least the period of One of these nights and Hotel California) are examples of interesting and catchy music (with usually lyrics that are not vapid). You may argue that you hate what a band stands for but that does not so much interest me as much as a real discussion of musically or lyrically what is it about the band's oeuvre that you object to.
The most annoying thing about the Eagles has always been that they don't suck. It's such blatantly cynical, watered-down Buffalo Springfield plastic kind of shit and the epitome of limousine-liberals, but you can't say in earnest they're lousy musicians and songwriters, and that's why they were even bigger villains than someone like Fred Durst.
Did he give one good reason that he didn't like the Eagles, other than he didn't like their politics? I can give a lot of good reasons not to like them, starting with Don Henley's narcissism.
They're just remarkably platitudinous. Their ethos has nothing to do with it, it's just really blase whitebread stuff. But it's worse, because Kansas or Boston or Chicago etc. relished in the awfulness, there was no pretensions. The Eagles were the same, but they clearly thought they were "writing some real stuff, man" which just makes it even douchier. That said, Joe Walsh is a legend.
who'dja think ye are, Malky--LeBOWski? the eagles wrote some great melodies--as did the pavementseses. him having a go at smashing pompkins was funnier than this. and billy's band has aged a tad bit better than either the so cal narcissists or the norcal snarkmeisters.
Jicks could cover Eagles no sweat. I'd like to see the Eagles TRY to cover the Malk
Apparently Don Henley is not a fan of Wowee Zowee so it's all good. He didn't think Rattled By The Rush was the right choice for first single either.
Henley needed to smoke more weed, then it would have made sense. But who cares, he crested with Boys of Summer which is really Mike Campbell's song anyway. Fuck it.
daddysensei Silver Ha!🤣
oooh sick burn
I've had a shitty day and I hate the fucking Eagles, man.
Me too buddy!
Would have been nice to hear the rest of the interview
SM has just ruined his chances of replacing Vince Gill when he leaves The Eagles.
SM was going to bring Bob along with him to play drums when Henley goes out front to sing End of the Innocence.
This interviewer does not like hearing the answers to the questions they ask. They just want to hear their own voice ask the questions.
He's too polite to say "fuck the Eagles"
Eagles always seemed like a ripoff of the Blue Jean Committee to me.
When was this. Steve sounds young. Maybe it was this year
I think it was 2014 or 2015.
They suck. All they did was rip off Gene Clark, Gosdin Brothers, The Byrds/Burrito Brothers etc. They got lucky with the early 70s coked out peaceful, greedy feeling.
@Triple6 Clique that is hilarious and totally wrong
If you have the full interview you should upload it! It's impossible to find elsewhere.
Do yourself a favor and get Soulseek! You can find every episode of this podcast on it (and virtually anything else you could imagine).
Bret Easton Ellis podcast, Steve Malkmus... just google it...
I never find myself disagreeing with anything Stephen says. he is really perceptive, doesn’t give a fuck, and keeps it real.

Listen to more music. These guys just basically ripped off graham parsons.

the dude also hates the eagles
I can understand his distaste in the Eagles, but Take it Easy is a really fucking great song. If you don't agree, idk what to tell you.
To be fair, it was mainly written by Jackson Browne.
Writing one great song is not that impressive. Making a great album is where the legends lie.
There is a reason that the Eagles' Greatest Hits is the best selling album of all time and it is not a complimentary one
Well what's the reason then?
there is a reason McDonald's is the best selling restaurant too-people are fucking dumb.

What is Soulseek?
Bonham House old music download software
Eagles still suck wind socks.
Laurel Canyon Social Engineering Rock....
Don and Glenn put Don Felder through hell. Why is this even a topic? Malkmus always got "the best" women.
Horse flies are the worst. WORST

America's first boy band
Big corporations and liberalism go hand and hand
