Madrid is a popular vacation destination and Spain's Christmas traditions are unique!
It is a typical tradition in Spain, I am Spanish and as a child I looked forward to the Three Kings Day (as you did with Santa Claus). In Spain, the Three Wise Men bring gifts to children on January 6, not December 25 like other countries.
Papá Noel también se celebra pero es en noche buena ,Los reyes es en Enero .Asi que la Navidad española dura hasta Enero .

The three wise men is an extended celebration in Spain, with many families attending "the cabalgata" in hopes of getting some candy. There are, however, other "mythological" humans who bring gifts around the 24th and 25th of December in northern regions of Spain, like Apalpador and Olentzero. Spain is a very diverse country.

It is more or less the same in every city... It is a very important tradition here.
Europe1Travel usually it's bigger the bigger the city (just because of the amount of taxpayers haha), but yes it's an important celebration all over Spain.

In my opinion, Barcelona's one is even better (at least in recent years, I found Madrid's one a bit underwhelming, full of publicity and "corporate" stuff).
It is also noticeable that in the city of Alcoi they've got the older registered parade (at least in Spain), and they say it's really unique :)

Is Balthazar painted in blackface? I'm looking for a good video to share with my students. Can't use this one!
This video was filmed 8 years ago in Madrid by our team. We do not know if people were painted in blackface that time or not. It's sure that today organisers of this kind of event in certain countries certainly pay much more attention to that matter.
There's some important informarion here to say.
Blackface was never a huge deal here as it was in the US, and we really didn't hear about it untill recent years due to globalisation.
Blackface was only done in 2 circumstances:
1. If there wasn't any black person in the town/city willing to play king Baltasar. That happened a lot some years ago, when Spain was a really closed country and there were almost none black people. Nowadays you probably won't find any parade where they do that, cause nowadays there's always at leaat one black person willing to play the character.
2. There's a relatively small town (I don't remember the name) where they did blackface for a tradition I don't really know, but it was only 1 town. I don't know either if they still do that to this day, but I do think they do.
The last but most important think to notice is that the context here is really different from the US' one. Here all children admire the 3 kings, and Baltasar is particularly popular (maybe the favourite of about 40% of kids!). The blackface that was done before wasn't to laugh out of black people as in the US, it was made for kids to be able to admire their idol, even if there wasn't a black person to play him. Playing any of the 3, including Baltasar, is an honour to anyone in this country. And that difference to what was done in the US is really important.

There is a parade in every city and town in Spain,
thousands are hired to play the three kings. It is a work of a few hours, they are neighbors; no one is going to come from outside. Due to the military dictatorship, Spain lived isolated from migration. There were no black people, so they tried to keep the black king with a painted white person. Currently, it is kept in small towns or cities where there are no black people. We try to end the habit but it will take time ... and I clarify, in no case is it a mockery of black people. The black king, Baltasar, is the most beloved by children.
