I work in a restaurant and mostly Hispanics work there. I'm Mexican but never knew my father (who gave me my Mexican side) so I never got to learn or do any of the traditional Mexican stuff or food. Sometimes I feel like a bad Mexican because I don't know Spanish. So my coworkers ask me if I wanted some of the bread, and I was like, yeah, and they told me if he found a baby Jesus, you have to bring tamales to work. Now, I've never really cooked tamales, but cooking is my passion, and I take culinary classes and I love to cook. And to my surprise, when I got the bread, there was a little baby Jesus inside, and that just made me feel really welcomed, just wanted to share my story.
Thank you for the video I was trying to explain my daughter about the Rosca de Reyes because is important to me that she knows her culture as a Mexican she only knows the American culture. We cut our first rosca and she found the baby. She was so happy. Thank you for sharing this video.

OMG, loved that video. Thank you! I'm generally interested in traditions and traditional food as well, and I'd love to hear more about Mexican traditions/traditional food. In Germany we have an old custom of hiding a dried bean inside a bread (or cake), usually for the end-of-summer-celebrations at the beginning of August. The person who finds the bean is the Bean King and sometimes is crowned with a paper crown. Please make more videos of this kind :)
We're so glad you liked it! We're working on more "How to...in Spanish" type videos right now, but we wanted to share this tradition quick to show some more of the culture here in Mexico. That German tradition is really interesting! My dad is from Germany and we just visited in 2017 together for the first time. Thanks for sharing! We'll definitely be making more videos like this one in the future. Thanks so much for your support! :) -Jim
Hello! I’m Hispanic, and live in America, but my family does this! We got money in our shoe and we will cut a pastry! - Coming from a 9 year old excited about this day.
It's not just "Día de Reyes", it's Día de Reyes Magos, so the translation it's not "Day of the kings". In English los 3 Reyes magos are known as "the 3 Wisemans Kings". I think the short name from British/Irish traditional Catholics used to be (or still are??) "Wisemans day".

Several years ago our church encouraged us to consider other faith traditions, like Three Kings Day, that would help us think of the Christ child beyond Christmas. We made a very simple three Kings cake back then, but this year I hope my boys and I can make a better one. But most importantly I want my boys to understand why we are celebrating, which you do such a great job explaining!! Question for you is…What do you usually eat/drink with the cake? Is there any traditional meals or drinks?
Loved this! I’m joining a celebration that my little Spanish school does in Todos Santos on the 6th! Your video really taught me so much! Three people are dressing as the Kings & we have a lot of gifts for the children of farm workers. Last year I was here & the restaurant I was at served the bread but I was just confused!! Thank you!! P.S.- is it possible to keep the written words on the screen longer so I can copy, then practice pronunciation?
There are a few facts that are not 100% accurate, but overall great job introducing this RELIGIOUS, CATHOLIC TRADITION, which I've celebrated with my family for my entire life. I'm 46 and this is more than a simple cultural tradition, it's directly related to our FAITH IN GOD AND THE BIRTH OF JESUS. The days before the 6th of January every year are all about preparing and planning 3 Kings Day, it's a HUGE DEAL, HUGE!!!! A day to visit with family and share in the Joy of the birth of Christ again!!! I did not grow up knowing about santa claus, I had no idea he existed until I was an adolescent, but we never celebrated the coming of santa in my home, he's a fictional character, Jesus is real, He's in the history books as a REAL PERSON WHO LIVED, even for those who don't believe in Him being The Christ, there's no doubt He is a real person who lived on this earth and was a prophet. Though now a days thanks to marketing santa is every where, but Christmas is ALL ABOUT CHRIST, AS IN JESUS CHRIST AS IN JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON PERIOD AND AMEN. I sensed a fearful "spirit" to stand up for Christ when the disclaimer was given 🤣🤣🤣, disclaimer: this is a secular channel... in Mexico there's no such thing we can speak freely and without judgement about God, Jesus, Mary, etc, there are very, very few ppl who would even voice a problem with it publicly, mostly they still respectfully do it privately. Since most of us grew up Catholic, we are for the most part tolerant, but in Mexico giving such disclaimers as this is a secular channel is totally unnecessary. This is just my take on it. I'm not trying to give hate here, just to clarify to the viewers that for us Mexican believers it's not just one more holiday, IT IS THE HOLIDAY!!! Traditionally gifts were not exchanged at all on Christmas day or boxing day like it is called in Britain. Gift giving was exclusively until 3 Kings Day, so much has changed since American influence and marketing has invaded our country. It is what it is, I'm a Mexican-American and proud of being bi-cultural, nothing can be done, this is the way of marketing to increase sales during the most sacred of holidays... same thing happened to our Day of the Dead, a celebration of the lives of our dead relatives and friends, a day to give respect to those who we loved and have left us, a day of remembrance, yes it's a little sad, but mostly full of joy an laughter, well now it's not the Day of the Dead and our traditions abounding full force everywhere, only a minority celebrate fully the Day of the Dead now, as we had done for centuries, now it is just holloween... a pagan celebration putting on silly costumes and giving candy so kids can develop more diabetes, btw in Mexico we are #1 in obesity and diabetes now... Shocker... It's a shame so much of our culture has succumbed to marketing and making $$$... Anywho, I hope all who read this comment are not upset and instead are encouraged to learn more about the original traditions that make our culture unique. All cultures are so rich and varied, it's definitely worth while researching and seeing how much most cultures are alike, how similar we all are. Viv la différence!!! 🙏🏻❤️
To the people who is using the video for a class, just make a point that the baby Jesus is a representation of the son of god and in Mexico is respected and a privilege to find it. We Do to not give it to a dog to chew it.
The context was that along King Balthazar wanted to kill baby Jesus. We put a crown on the dog to represent this. No plastic baby Jesuses we’re harmed in the making of this video. 😂 -Jim

On January 6, Polish Catholics take small boxes containing chalk, a gold ring, incense, and a piece of amber to church to be blessed. Once at home, they inscribe the date and "K+M+B+" (or, more recently, C+M+B) with the blessed chalk above the door to protect against illness and misfortune for those within. King Cake with a lucky coin or almond. The one to receive the piece with a coin or almond will be the king! Most recently, Polish Catholics started to recreate the procession in which the Magi arrived to Jesus. The procession is usually accompanied by groups of carol singers
