Daniel Sieberg reports on a revolutionary technology. Brainport sends electrical impulses to the tongue, using tiny cameras as eyes, essentially creating a picture for blind people.
this is amazing, what I find more interesting is that by the way he says it at the end, you can tell out of all the things in the world he misses seeing the most, it's facial ques, like a smile, or a frown. I think we all take that for granted.
The Center is proud to announce that we have just graduated our 38th class and to date, students have been hired by companies such as Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Marriott, Hyatt, MGM Grand, Hampton Hotels, Disney World and Travis Air Force Base as well as other business. We have also graduated students from over 32 states and we have an international presence, welcoming students from Jamaica, Canada and Armenia!
This works because it is displaying an actual picture in the form of electrical impulses, Such as if you got a painting that had thick parts of paint that defined each object you would be able to define the shapes on it, you cant do that with sound because sound is a wave.
We operate three 10 week classes in Buffalo and all of our training is FREE to the individual. We also offer one training session per year off site as well. So far we’ve been to Orlando Florida, Albany New York and Las Vegas, Nevada. All of our students participate in a hands-on externship and often many students are hired from the same externship company!
Graduates of our one-of-a-kind program are computer-literate, equipped with a thorough knowledge of industry standards, and ready for successful, long-term careers. Potential employers are hotels, convention centers, travel agents, call centers, etc. I am pleased to report that to date, almost 400 students have achieved a remarkable average job placement rate of approximately 82 %- nearly triple the national employment figures for this population!
God bless the blind...i know we all have it very hard at times, but not like them. Gotta give them all the respect they deserve. They are some of the toughest people out there.
I really can not understand how this could be possible. However, I hope this great product can be produced at large scale to help the many blind in this world.
What happens then you remove the electrode from your tongue and start eating food? Wouldn't the trained neural network now start seeing imaginary images?
it's 2015 - where is this tech? This seems so much simpler and lower cost than bionic eyes and brain implants. And with today's cheap and miniature cameras, hi-resolution should be no problem at all. Even 3rd world countries could afford this on a mass scale.
It seems this technology is still alive - and seems significantly improved. Search for Brainport on google. Watch this October 2016 video on Fox news : fox2now.com/2016/10/21/brainport-creates-brighter-future-for-blind-americans/
Guys, this kind of stuff takes years to be perfected, reviewed, be approved for public use, and then made affordable to the public. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't start seeing people wearing similar devices for another 5-10 years. And that's being generous.
The National Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality Service is a recognized leader in the field of hospitality and contact center training. The first and only program of its kind, the Statler Center provides visually impaired, blind and physically disabled individuals with the right tools for successful careers in the multi-billion dollar hospitality and contact center industry.
@16ar there is a way to see using echolocation. i know it sounds weird but it actually works.just search "guy sees by using echolocation" and you'll get lots of hits.thousands of blind people use this to see.it is possible that you can be taught it.i hope this help some.
Why are people always so impaitiant and negetive when something, an idea, a theory pops up and isn't imidiantly proven and made avalible for everybody. Money, tests, safety, comfert, ect. There are so many thing that go into making everything and anything, don't rush it, hope that it'll work.
Why don't they instead use the invention I seen on Ted Talks, the one where this one guy teaches the mind to accept different senses using a device a person wears on their back.
Scientist are already working on better way to make blind see than "tongue-vision". And I think they should concentrate on the synthetisation of neural information . So we will, in the future, add things to normal visual or earing information and maybe cure the blinds.
So awesome. If the technology really does get to the point of the third car picture, blind people should be able to learn to read normal books without a slow speech synthesizer and without having to wait for braille versions, and may even be able to look at websites like this one (though perhaps at very low resolution) by hooking that gadget up to their computers.
@PherVented I imagine the problem isn't the camera, it's finding the sweet spot between electrodes/electrode patterns, the signal, and the brain's capability to rewire itself. It isn't like turning on your laptop webcam.
What do I need faith for? What do I need blessings for? Why would I believe without seeing, when I could have evidence instead? What's tragic about requesting evidence and not being credulous?
Oh I'm so happy! I'm legally blind and use a cane to get around. I never heard of this technology but I hope it comes out soon so then I can see better!
It can't be rerouting. How could it reroute that fast so the moderator could see? If someone writes on your hand something, you should be able to say what is he writing/drawing and you don't even have to see it. It's imho more like that you feel a circle on your tongue, so you then imagine there is something in form of circle in front of you. And tongue because it is the most sensitive thingy on human body. Anyway it's a bloody good tool!
With hearing and touch improved like a savant, I reckon a blind person could get very clear readings of detailed resolution on the tongue. Frightingly quick, I dare guess :) I wonder if colours has their own taste...
Now why isnt more funding going to stuff like this rather than building shopping complexes and paying celebrities obsence wages? This looks great, really exciting.
How is it today? 2019, is it advanced?
I know you're here after Coursera Machine Learning course 😁
we all are same
same here ha ha
this brings a new meaning to watching what you eat

The human brain is a wonderful thing. It can rewire itself with enough constant input. Awe inspiring story.

It's truely incredible to witness the technological advances that we continue to make... there really are no words for it.
God bless the blind...i know we all have it very hard at times, but not like them. Gotta give them all the respect they deserve.
They are some of the toughest people out there.
Thats amazing, shows how versatile the human brain is.
I really can not understand how this could be possible. However, I hope this great product can be produced at large scale to help the many blind in this world.
wow this was uploaded back in 2007, 8 years ago i can imagine what improvements has been done now. Does anybody know of more recent videos. Thanks
here is the most recent article I found.

What happens then you remove the electrode from your tongue and start eating food? Wouldn't the trained neural network now start seeing imaginary images?
0114mercury nope, unless you're eating food which produces electric impulses
Lemon would produce static

2017 and still waiting... It seems like they dont want to help the bind people, same wirh people with cancer...

Its been 8 years what do you think about the progress
Wow... unbelievable!
Very cool!
Phew. Feels nice to know that most diseases can be cured or in any other way fixed by the time I grow up!
Wow, thats truly amazing. I really hope this goes somewhere.
Its been 15 years what do you think about the progress?

i just saw this on GMA too. this is amazing!
lamo
Amaizing !!! Hope the technlogy gets more and more improved, so that it van help people.
Very interesting story.
that's litturaly amazing...

this is so beyond amazing!
this is really something... best wishes for the team! ;)

Unbelieveable.
OMG This is so amazing. got to spread this tech to all over the world
This is neat - and not nearly as creepy as the dude with a tooth in his eye.
That is so awsome. There is almost nothing humans cant do!
That is pretty ace. Do you reckon we'll ever eliminate the inability to see?
"Miracle" of the eye my ass. Take that theists. ANOTHER VICTORY FOR SCIENCE!
that device looks like what they use to take dental x-rays with. interesting.
This'll give new meaning to "You looks so bitter!" or "He seems sweet" ^_^ WAY TO GO
when he was able to "see" they've shown few logos to him and he was able to recognise them as he had learnt them
just amazing
that's incredible. I hope that it works out!!

Wow...that really is cool. Beign blind would be really hard.
I saw this. It's amazing!!!
Wow! That's great!

thats insane...
incredible
they still have this in 2011, i imagine that letting blind people have so much reliance on this will be torn apart by health and safety (sadly).
That is so cool!
Amazing..
@kotowate look up herd immunity- individuals choosing not to immunize affects us all, especially those unable to use vaccines.
snakes use their tongue to detect moving objexts; same principle

Roger Bain looks like Ron Perlman (Hellboy)
that is so awesome. i love technology.
thats really cool. scary, but cool and a good thing
that's freaking awesome.
maybe UA-cam could have something like that, which comes out of the USB port someday.
=D We take so much for granted. I hope he gets to see smiles soon ^-^.
yeh, you might wanna also check out Nick Vujicic. Really inspiring.
Oh I'm so happy! I'm legally blind and use a cane to get around. I never heard of this technology but I hope it comes out soon so then I can see better!
Sweet! Advancement is wonderful. Too bad we don't get to see the the great achivements after we die. Or do we?
amazing.. omg...
unbelievable
this could be the future of digital entertainment! if they can do visual impulses maybe they can do sound and others, MATRIX LIKE! rofl
its was on the news 2 weeks ago..
Not getting vaccines also puts babies who have not yet had all their vaccinations in danger.
and in case there's no light ?
That is amazing!
Because it's too expensive!

un freakin believable
amazing!
holy cow, thats great. hope it works.
So what happened now? this video was uploaded in 07
So wait can they actually see the image?
wow amazing technology
I need to get one of these and put the camera on the back of my head... that way I'll be able to have "eyes in the back of my head" so to speak :P
2000 year old guy raised from the dead? How?
That blind man looks like Hell Boy!!!!
Pretty sweet. Looks like blind people might have a bright future =P
Bigup a la 1s3 de chato
Sisi
this is wonderfull
cool!
Is it turned on?
It's 2013 and no sign of this still
Now why isnt more funding going to stuff like this rather than building shopping complexes and paying celebrities obsence wages? This looks great, really exciting.
k,, maybe u can feel a circle.. .or a stripe on a white wall... but how are you gonna feel a car crossing your tounge?
Update ?
Now, in 2013 I dont see them too.
It's 2010. Why don't I see blind people with this?
so he can't talk when he sees?
Yeah, realy great for a lot of ppl :) Hope it will turn out good..
how would a blind person know what the logo looks like?
amasing
