Joe Sinnott will always be one of my favorite Kirby inkers, you can probably count the number of inkers on one hand who really did justice to Kirby's art and concepts.

Joe always inked Kirby the best. His bold, firm style enhanced Kirby's kinetics and energy.

This man is as much responsible for the success of the FF as Kirby. He gave Kirby's art the detail and finesse that it deserved. Other inkers filled in from time to time but I remember Frank Giocia just didn't do the book justice. Hats off to Joe!

I love Joe Sinott, but he didn't start doing the Fantastic Four regularly untill issue 44. I think that you sell Jack Kirby short.

Did you not read FF #36 through 43? And who do you think carried Marvel through the silver age? Jack Kirby's work improved in the later 1960's because his volume of books per month dropped significantly and he could take more time on each page. Don't get me wrong, I think that Joe Sinnott is the greatest inker in comic history and the team of Kirby/Sinnott produced the best comics in history. I have most of them. Sinnott said that he was amazed at the work that would come in the mail and couldn't wait for each installment. Sinnott also said that some days he would lose money inking Kirby's art because the detail consumed so much time. Unlike Vince Coletta, who would erase parts of Kirby's work rather than take the time to ink it, Sinnott was dedicated.
Jack Kirby also wrote most of the books and Stan Lee would come in and add a "Thee" and "Thou" to perk it up. The "Thee,s" and "Thou's" did add to the stories, but the great ideas of the silver age that made Marvel great were all out Kirby's mind and that made The Fantastic Four "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine".

  • @johnminehan1148

I've read that Kirby really appreciated the thought and care Sinnott put into translating what Kirby did in his pencils into the inked page. Kirby used the shading potential the penciled page to create a presentation that differed from what the published, inked pages entailed. The difference was less with Sinnott. I suspect Murphy Anderson might have done the same thing at DC, had he not had the task or correcting Kirby's Superman and Jimmy Olson to bring them "on model."

Wally Wood had a similar role on the Sky Masters newspaper strip and on the Challengers of teh Unknown (andsome covers at Marve lin 1964 & '65). George Klein did a bit of that on Challengers, FF #1 and (late in the game) on Thor.
