I'm training to be an Art Teacher atm and one of my students was building an art portfolio for animation. And I was looking through it and it was all photo realistic pieces. When I asked if they drew anime or cartoon, they told me that their parents didn't allow them to because it wasn't "real art". So they instead had to draw it in secret and when they gave me their "secret sketchbook" I was completely blown away. They honestly looked ashamed they gave it me but when I started complimenting it they seemed almost in shock that I liked it.
So yes, PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS/CHILDREN TO DRAW ANIME AND CARTOON.

Aww that is so sad... :( I hope your student eventually feels more confident about their cartoon work! But yeah anime, cartoon, any style of art really, if that's what gets you to lay that line down, just do it!

I had an art teacher who was strict with the school curriculum, and she was a pain to deal with. I went into art class because of the teacher next door, who was forced to do ceramics since there wasn't another teacher who can. Now he was the one who was just like you, so I would always go to him for advice. Just wanted to share this.

I was told it was "avoid shading with black" in the idea that black is dull and it's better to use dark blues and purples to give more 'life'. So, like, unless piece is black-and-white or you want to make a dull piece of art, avoid using black to shade.

@@mastertofu yea! shadows actually can be more saturated! thats probably the trap people fall into thinking shadows are only desaturated and dull, rainbows can be found in the most unlikely places! blacks nice to shift radiance, blacks just all 3 colors combined and easier to slap into for use when dulling things rather then having to keep double, triple, quad dipping into paint piles, sighs!

I was really lucky about the anime thing. My art teacher didn't discourage me from drawing it at all, he knew I enjoyed it, so he would make me study classically and when I was done with my piece, he would encourage me to cool off with an anime styled artwork. Now thanks to him, I can switch from photo realism to anime in an instant.

I wanted to add to the "teachers don't want you to draw anime". It could be because of the reasons you listed, but I also think it could be that they just want you to understand realistic human anatomy before you start stylizing it. I don't think teachers should ban the students from drawing anime, but make them understand that learning the fundamentals of anatomy (the head, eyes, muscles, poses....) is a big benefit before you start stylizing it. It's just the phrase "learn the rules before you break them" as everyone knows at this point.
Of course, everyone has their own comfortable way of learning. But personally, If I think back to the days when I was a beginner, I drew whatever I liked, I had fun. But if I was just nudged a bit more to learn proper anatomy, I would probably be better off from the start. I could have always stylized it later and on the side.
And for the "Don't use the color black for shading". I do think black is a valid color to use when used properly in stylized art. Comic books with solid black shading are a good example. But I think when people refer to "don't shade with black" it's more of shading a character with just a transparent black color. Which often makes the character's colors look flat. It's not the worst of art crimes imo haha, but adding a transparent blue or purple for shading would make it pop up more and make it more lively.

Honestly, anime at its core is 90% realism and 10% aesthetic window dressing that hard-headed, old-fashioned Western art snobs hate. With its already built in anatomy and structure, anime isn't a bad place to start. You also get a bonus peak into how the fundamentals are applied to design decisions in a legitimate entertainment environment. For anyone actively pursing the anime style, they eventually learn that anime has a very, very heavy grounding in the fundamentals. In my opinion, art teachers should be thanking students that they're starting here and not anything weirder.

as an anime artist, completely agree, a lot of my practice for drawing good art is actually anatomy practice! although, id like to note, if you are planning to draw with an anime artstyle, learning how an actual head and face looks is also very important to get it right, since animes 10%, is mostly the head, and by god I do not speak of the blob like chinless terrors i drew before I traced like 3 photos of an actual human face to get used to the placement.

    • @ourenart3106
      @ourenart3106 3 роки тому +8

@@r_tten Yeah, one of the pitfalls of the anime style is that it can be difficult to figure out how the head works when all you've got to go by are the large eyes and nonexistent noses. But, you do see why those design decisions were made once you look at a few realistic references. And, admittedly, anime artists can get a bit defensive about art style around the head area (with the weird anti-anime sentiment, especially a decade ago, I can't really blame them--us).

    • @sabrinasmh4389

Some anime is not at all %90 realism, most anime is actually aesthetic. The reason why teachers don’t like anime is because usually people start their art career drawing anime only, and not acknowledging realistic proportions to actual realism. I never trace when doing original art unless it will not be included in the final piece and is just to emphasize reference features.
However, doing edits of different styles, such as editing Genshin characters to be more scantily clad (to see what they would look like under the clothes, this is mostly done with razor) can help with learning anatomy, and how to morph your style so that it isn’t the same all of the time.
Also, IF YOU WANT TO DRAW PORN, DRAW PORN. It REALLY helps anatomy and skin shading.

I feel like the "Don't use black" is good temporary advice because I know when I was younger I had such a hard time getting my colors to look good because I was using black as shading for EVERYTHING and it was muddy and ugly. Taking black out made it easier for me to get a hold of how to make colors look good and once I got a better grip on that I reintroduced black.
So if you're having trouble with your colors being muddy and ugly don't use black, figure out how to use colors, THEN ignore the don't use black rule.

at my art school I constantly get critiqued for 'being too inspired by anime' and it drives me insane, because anime, while it's a huge part of what I enjoy and study, isn't the only thing I take inspiration from. I love classical and romantic art (especially German/Russian and from my home country Poland), golden age illustration, Victorian poster art, spooky vintage Halloween postcards, ancient Chinese and Japanese paintings, all sorts of different animation styles from different times and countries, you name it, there's so much more to what influences me, and yet all they see is the evil anime. and even if it was, so what? they can't deny the huge success and influence of people like Osamu Tezuka or Miyazaki and all the other amazing artists. I personally value them more than Disney, because I like when animation has some mundane realism to it, I love the quiet moments, I love the exaggerated emotions, and I hate inbetweening both because it's tedious and boring and I could spend that time drawing better keys and because it just looks too smooth if the whole film is 24fps.
on the other hand people who straight up copy simple wacky ass cartoon styles or just go full on Disney-style, or do some extra abstract experimental shit always get praised and get higher grades.

Teachers don't like it when I say I want to draw anime. Frankly speaking, it's one of the toughest art styles I have tried to amulate and is personally the prettiest so of course I try to draw anime styles. The teachers kept discouraging me from drawing anime and to continue improving my realism and I practically lost all fun I got from art. Then my mom got me a phone and I was exposed to digital art and slowly learned to develop an anime-inspired art style which got me back into drawing. I think the way the anime art styles share and highlight is magnificent and I'm no longer going to listen to those art teachers.
It's disappointing how some art teachers give biased marks. In my art test last year, we were supposed to paint a vegetable/fruit based on a reference. Me and two other classmates were the 'artists' in the class and we did the tomato. One does anime only and made the lighting and shading so dramatic it was beautiful. I tried following the reference as close as I could. We both got way less marks than the last girl. Why? Because even though her tomato wasn't based on the reference, it was so hyper-realistic that all the teachers believed hers was the best. I'm not trying to discredit her, we're all friends and she's insanely good, but it's insulting when our art teachers favour realism over everything else about the art.

@orbit in my opinion, I think doing a non-realistic (anime/cartoon/etc) drawing should be good if people find it hard to do realism, because you can first try to do proportions with it, and when you’re completely comfortable in that aspect, doing realism would be a ton easier

I 100% agree with the topic of drawing manga/anime. I remember being discouraged a lot for drawing manga and often told to draw other things. I’m not opposed to drawing other stuff because it’s helps me develop more different styles, but I overall enjoy drawing manga. But when I started my junior year of high school one of my art teachers really enjoyed my manga art and always encouraged me to continue with it. He even helped me put together a portfolio when I was applying to art schools and in the end I got accepted into my current art school. What surprised me most was that a lot of my professors enjoyed the art I was producing because I’ve heard the stories of professors not liking the art form. Like you said in the video, the anime art form has had such an influence on western animation lately so I feel people are starting to be more accepting of it which I’m really happy about. Anime and manga is still art, it’s just different from what you’re used to seeing.

I think this anime stigma comes from people that see beginner artists only copy the art they admire and be proud of the result because it looks anatomically and generally accurate and really awesome but in reality they didnt really learn anything except the way the original artist stylizes and that obviously doesnt help without a good foundation. But those people/artists often overlook the fact that anime is usually the first step for a beginner artist into serious art, a journey of improving and learning to love what you do.
I've always loved drawing but it was only when i discovered webtoons that i was so amazed by this art that i wanted to replicate it. Soon i realized i do not have even the tiniest bit of the skill that is required to actually draw a webtoon, so i started practicing to get there. And as i was going i discovered a lot of new stuff that was partly fun, partly tiring but now my art teacher seems impressed by my "skills". He wouldn't have been back in the day when i was only able to copy the done cartoon, so i would take their advice with a grain of salt. Of course they are somehow right, you shouldnt stay in the "only copying other peoples stuff" phase for too long, but it can be a portal to a new dimension and a big joy for you, if you follow the route!
(Excuse my English, i'm still learning as well i'm still learning considering art)

So hearing how some other teachers banned you from drawing whatever you want I love mine even more. Hard agree. Black/desaturation should be used in a way that makes it look appealing, just with all colors, and when it’s used in a form that would benefit more from hue, it can take the life out of a drawing. Of course, artists can do that for stylistic purposes if they want to, I’m just talking about the ones who are doing it unintentionally and want to learn more about shading.

I have heard interesting counter arguments with the whole art teachers hating anime shtick. And that is that in some cases it's the teachers know that if a student starts to draw in anime and only draws in anime because they like it and their fav media is in that style that the student will stump their growth. They will only know how to draw in an anime style and won't build their own unique one and if they want to go into the art industry they might not have the chance to work on an anime project. So I think for some teachers it's more the argument of not wanting the student to just stick to one style and replicate it but rather form their own. In saying that there are some teachers who genuinely are just anal about no anime because "it's not real art"

  • @Sophieperky

I can’t add the ascended spongebob meme here but it’s precisely how I felt when Meesh validated my entire art path as an animation student who has drawn more anime inspired art until now lmao.
I can draw other styles and hell I even do quite frequently in my own time. I have a comic style completely separate from my anime one. But my anime style is not only my strongest style to share online, its also the style I enjoy and personify as my style the most. I’m a third year whose about to graduate and I’m stubborn as ever lmao. You can draw mostly anime, you just gotta have the confidence and determination to see it through despite people who may throw you down.
Anime is such a diverse style even if we consider it a style in its own too, alot of artists takes on the style is their own interpretation which makes it their style. People invalidating artists versions of the style as just copying is usually trashing on the years of growth and inspiration from multiple artists eastern and western to make that style- as well as just invalidating every anime studio out there that has their own unique version of the style. It’s not one style, sure some may share similar points but these are points shared across all animation as a whole, not just anime.
Animation has had big eyes and expressions since near its beginning with the exception of cut out and rotscoped animation. The main thing with some anime is the more human esque proportions in places but even then you look at studios like trigger and even thats bot the case most of the time. Most people compare works made by the same studio as them having the same style and it hurts my soul. Not every anime style is A1- A1 just has a formula for the style they use since its popular. I absolutely agree people should diversify styles and take inspo from multiple sources to build their own style, but hell you could technically do that even entirely within anime, the range is really alot more dynamic than people give it credit for. I like taking inspo from both eastern and western works but I wouldn’t call someone with a unique style made from mostly anime works invalid for their style inspo origins. Hell I wouldn’t call someone who did just draw in A1’s style invalid either especially if they are aware of that inspo, theres a market for that style, it’s not a bad thing.
I actually consider anime and western cartoon styles as the new modern art movement. Though its funny to joke about how hentai might be looked on by art historians in a hundred years time as a magmum opus, it’s actually something that can really happen. Hell it already is, the worlds oldest anime is hidden away as a japanese historical treasure and it has the panty trope in it ftfggggh Hell its even been done with past artstyles in the past, art only is validated when the style is not popular, I don’t get humanity for that fact. I’m gonna be writhing in my grave when art teachers start telling kids off for not drawing spongebob correctly because they are drawing in the new art trend in many hundreds of years time.
And hoo sorry I had to get that off my chest. That was meant to be a short comment, but Meesh’s acknowledgement on all this ignited something in me lmao.

I literally had to show my homeroom teacher a pokemon manga to show her that some manga had nothing to do with nsfw stuff but for some reason she acted like she didn't believe me. She flipped through the manga and asked me "This is manga?", I said yes and she started looking through it again and I kind of felt like she looked at me like she thought I was lying to her when she handed the manga back to me. Some boys from the older classes even asked if I'm the girl that "draws naked girls" because they want me to draw something for them. So thanks to these teachers who had no idea what they were talking about, created the rumor that I draw nsfw stuff. -_-

I related to this really hard! After going through art school for so many years I’ve had my share of great and not so great professors. There were some professors that really tried to help me get my pieces to read as I wanted it to by sharing how it read to them and how I could improve it toward what I wanted but others that just... tried to change it completely to what they wanted which made me end up making a piece they wanted rather than what I wanted to make in the first place with the message I wanted. In hindsight mayyybe I guess in a way it helps to learn to make corrections for what a client wants for example but they don’t frame it that way so I doubt that was the intention. Sometimes I got professors that just wanted their student body to look good (and I think that’s all professors to a degree of course) which was sometimes at the expense of students original concepts. Lots of frustrating advice in college and I love hearing experiences from other art school grads! I definitely made a ton of friends going through art school because we bitch about that same stuff 😅

    Some input:
I never trace anymore when doing original art that will be shown unless it will not be included in the final piece and is just to emphasize reference features. I did trace when I was a beginner, however. It helped me learn.
Black can muddy certain colors, but it is not invalid to shade with black.
Doing edits of different styles, such as editing Genshin characters to be more scantily clad (to see what they would look like under the clothes, this is mostly done with razor) can help with learning anatomy, and how to morph your style so that it isn’t the same all of the time.
Also, IF YOU WANT TO DRAW PORN, DRAW PORN. It REALLY helps anatomy and skin shading. Learning to draw the genitals/crotch can actually really help your characters to look more anatomically correct. Hentai also helps with posing.
Realism is quite impressive, but twisting reality is even more impressive.

One of my art teachers absolutely HATED it when I or my friends would draw something that looked slightly anime-ish. She'd tell us to stop and do something else when the assignment was to draw/paint something we wanted to draw/paint. But then she'd turn around and praise the students drawing western cartoon characters, even when they are not listen to her abd not following the assignments directions (so like, she'd tell us to paint a sky or something and those kids are painting spongebob instead)
I've heard that apparently she's gotten better but she mistreated me and my friends (she did way more than just yell at us for drawing anime) to the point I just don't like her and don't want to forgive her.

Honestly, I’m having such a hard time of developing a style. I get very caught up in making sure my art is accurate, so even when I’m trying to create something stylized, it often ends up being more realistic than I intended.
I think this is partially because people would make comments saying, “You should use less line work. There’s not lines in real life.” I’m currently trying to let myself be more creative.

It depends on your end goal/ artistic path, and who you're creating for. For yourself, do what you want. For a design piece, black can help immensely. If your goal is a visual artist, then listening to your teacher and applying the fundamentals are very important in order to gain that knowledge. No one says you have to follow everything that is given to you, though. So to say "don't listen to these tips" isn't allowing yourself to grow as a creative. Comparing art and design, they carry different techniques and fundamentals. And I do not understand how the catcaller analogy relates to your art teacher telling you that for this lesson, you have to make black in order to understand natural colors and color theory.

I'm 17 right now and I'll be going into my senior year and ive been really lucky to have a school art teacher who is young and supportive of different styles,, and i have an afterschool art class with a teacher who is inks comics for a living. Through having these teachers over the past year I've improved so much and im so much more confident in my art. My biggest suggestion or piece of advice i have is to draw as much art with ink or pen as possible. My afterschool teacher started me off with perspective and basic still lifes and then immediately started teaching me how to do linework and inking. After learning how to control ink and render images using it i improved in literally every other form of art because i learned to control my hand and wrist movement, while also learning how to convey light and shadow while only using two colors (black and white). Its crazy because a year ago i struggled to produce straight lines with anything other than a pencil, but now im a lot more confident with my lines and im able to draw quickly in ink with barely any sketch underneath. Im glad my teachers never pushed me away from doing art other than realism, but if your teacher is pushing for realism only, explain to them why drawing anime or cartoon characters is useful. Talk about improving composition, storytelling, contrast, lights and shadows, perspective, or even colors. If they still push realism only then tbh they dont know what theyre talking about and you shouldnt listen to their advice.

I think the main reason teachers don’t want you to draw anime is because it’s important to have a basic understanding of anatomy before you stylize it. Anime is very stylized so if a student only draws anime and never bothers to understand proper form and such it will harm them in the long run.

Personally, I love that you speak critically about the art industry. You are honest in a conversation that very few people are having. We can't rely on the mainstream to make comprehensive documentary that will be applicable to anyone looking to enter the art industry. So, thank you. And, in the same way the professors push the students to speak on, "Okay, you like it. What do you like about it?" Professors NEED to tell you why they don't like something. And it needs to be more than their personal peeves/subjective style bias or whatever.

I remember growing up in the art community around the time where people would make videos giving criticism to random people on deviantart and I even remember times where it went completely south. Now giving advice to artist who want it can be a very good thing but the problem came when a lot of users are criticism forced onto them. Some UA-camrs would treat their advice like it was this holy grail that you dare would not question and you MUST take it.
A lot of artists got hurt during this time. some got a massive amount of harassment, some had to change their username to help escape the mob and some straight up quit art afterwards. (A name like Aki dalliah comes to mind, I forgot how to spell her username.)
In short, if you’re giving criticism be aware who you’re giving it to as far so you know, that random user might just be a 13 year old child first starting art. It also help to ask if they’re ok with criticism first before giving it.
    Just my thoughts.

Speaking of realism and communicating - you should really check out the book "illustration" by Alan Male. It's one of my course books in my visual communication degree, and I especially liked the breakdown of hyper realism and the whole "creating fantasy worlds" aspect. It also has tons of inspiring images and other fun stuff :3

Yee, I mean tbh the other reason why people kinda judge others for an anime style is cause anime is easier to learn/faster to draw.
The learning curve for artist when it comes to anime is usually two things: they start drawing anime with no foundation or they start from foundational and decide they want to later draw in an anime style. Like I was surprised when friends could draw awesome anime styles, but struggled with realistic.
A lot of professors and artists say they ended up "growing out if it" or that its more of a passion project.
I did want to make a YT video about it down the line, but idk thats what I think!

I think it’s better to use a different dark pigment. Though you of course should do as you please and do what works for you. That’s after all just my experience 🙂

Ah I have a tale of this one art kid at my school I was talking to tell me that I shouldnt do symbolism with my stuff??????? She kind of always talks about wanting to go to art school so was her critique an actual thing or just a personal distaste? I haven't actually had an art class since 5th grade and I wanted some advice and some criticism, so I asked this girl who is like "I'm going to go to art school" and "look at my new watercolor pallet" because I was using watercolor and, hey she uses it too.
I was drawing a set of characters once on a sheet of watercolor paper for each one and I was using symbolism for the background of each one as well as using one color in different shades for each character with a different color usually contrasting but not necessarily opposite like I did purple+green and pink+yellow.
This chick literally was like "hey that foreground is done in a normal perspective but the city scape is layered and has no depth that's bad" so I explained the reasoning and symbolism along the lines of "I'm making it look like a stage play because the character being drawn sees the world around them as more of a play that everyone is acting in so they put up a façade" (I was kind of inspired by dramaturgy) And after I explained she told me to draw more literally because "no one is going to get your stupid symbolism give more hints about it" and she went on a minor rant about why my work sucked with this specific one out of my 8 or so characters because of how no ones going to get its a stage background and to add theater lights or something THEN SHE TOOK OUT A PENCIL AND TRIED TO DRAW THEM ON THE TOP OVER MY WATERCOLOR. And its not even like the city scape was looking realistic, I made them look more like a drawing then the other backgrounds and specifically told this girl they were meant to be viewed as a group-
so like was that her personal bias or was she actually serious about that cuz I know she gets all flaunty with that "When I graduate I'm going to blah, blah art college" ah sorry for the length if you read through this anyone.
