I just bought and got the part from these guys. I just installed it. It is actually possible to remove the lens from the casing. I used a heat gun and went around the outside multiple times and just started prying it up. I used a screwdriver, plastic/nylon pry bar and pick to separate the lens. Take your time. I used black silicon to reattach the lens after. Big shout out to them from making these videos to refer to, and for selling this part.
I had to replace 3 of these headlight clusters on my NAS 2020 D110 HSE, two left (driver side here), one right. Only one was replaced under warranty, the remaining two were past the 50K miles factory warranty and were on my dime. Cost of a new one from the dealer here in North America is ridiculous, around 4 grands with labor. I found a couple of used but working ones on eBay for about $800/900, luckily the replacements are plug and play. In two out of three instances, the round halo and the two "square" LEDs on the side - surrounding the turn signals - went out at the same time (in the third case, only the halo went out and the two squares remained on), so I am not so sure that replacing the small board of the round halo alone would always fix the issue of a malfunctioning unit, but it's very encouraging that you can now find aftermarket parts for these. Thanks Simon.
I read about these failing on a US forum, and as someone who repairs old electronics regularly it seemed absurd that people were replacing thousands of pounds of parts instead of fixing them, which was clearly going to be possible. You're right that they should be serviceable by law, we endless new regulations yet obvious ones never appear.
Thanks Simon! Great video. My lights went out 2k miles after the warranty expired - both the halo ring on one side and the white marker lights around the turn signals. Sign me up to buy the circuit board for the white marker lights as well if you ever sell one!
They are coming should be here this week. I would still go to Land Rover and say it was existing condition when the car was made … they may cover under warranty
Highly useful again Simon and interesting to see how it can be fixed. Useless information…my Dad’s 1953 Vauxhall Velox had a light strip working on the same principle. A light bulb at one end of the clear Perspex rod with one side machined flat produced a downwards light that illuminated the heater and lighting switches! It was super high tech at the time! 😃😃😃😃
Very useful video, thanks Simon for the information, your simplicity and comprehensive explanation for the process is priceless. I have always enjoyed your videos I have a question if you do not mind me asking, i am trying to make an outside circuit to try those lights out, i have done almost everything up and working( low beam, high beam, and signal) However, i do not know how can to turn DRL on, can you please help me with that one, how the DRL is connected to the external output?
Had both of mine replaced, luckily under warranty. So good to know there's this option now. Would have been interesting to see the brightness comparison between the Chinese and original ?
Very Valuable, Since my Halo headlight ring light went out, but so did the two square Halo rings for the headlamp turn signal? In your great video, it looks like the circuit board for the turn signal (two square rings) is completely separate. Do you know hot to also get the other circuit board ? (the headlight and yellow turn signal function) the halo ring AND the two halo rectangles don't light, so I think I need more parts to repair the two halo rectangles.?
Hello! I have a Velar 2019... My DRL on the passenger side goes off after 60-90 sec... when I use the low beam and the position (side lights), they stay on with no issue, signal works with no problems, also if I revert back to DRL, stays on again but for only 60-90 sec... form your various experiences, what do you think might be the problem, a module, the LED itself, wire, connector...? I am worried that I will have to change the entire headlamp and the cost is about 5-6k Euro (I have no warranty)...
Interesting to know. It’s when you have parts like this made from many bits you realise why the car costs so much. All the mould tools that need to be set up and designed must be a fortress of tooling for one car.
Wonder what the failure rate is for these? eg what % of the 2020 model year vs 2021 and 2022 etc? Any idea if the problem is getting better or if the supplier has fixed the problem.
Hi Simon. My 3.5 y/o defender left drl has just failed and my dealer is looking to see if it is covered by the extended warranty (I am nervous it won’t be). My vehicle is fitted with PUK auxiliary reversing lights and I’m concerned they will use this an excuse to refuse the warranty claim. Do you have any experience of this? And can you advise the quickest way to disconnect the aux lights just in case? Thanks (Another)Simon
Hi The headlight and rear light circuits are not connected - but of course such logic will not have any bearing on the dealer. To disconnect the rear lights you need to remove the rear corner plastic - then you can unplug the lights. ua-cam.com/video/khZHaLj4XWc/v-deo.html This is a known problem and the fault was present when the car was built - although it does not manifest itself till past the 3 years point. Let me know how you get on.
@@L663 thanks Simon. I will give it a shot tomorrow and hope I don’t break any clips on the process. Better to be safe than to give the dealer the excuse to not address this as a warranty issue.
Will this work on base model where no one angel light setup available? Rather I would plan to buy that chip and white light guide to complete my setup. Any other suggestions/ comments are welcome 🙂
I changed both headlights (only one under warranty) because of the daytime running lights (angel eyes). I don't understand why it is not repaired under warranty as long as it is already known that there is a problem. Land Rover should fix the problem and make recalls by replacing the headlights. It is clearly a manufacturing/design defect. Please let me know if you find out about any recall. Thank you.
I am aware that LED's run brighter when they are cooler. To me the design is wrong - trying to get all the light in one super bright small area .. that gets hot... only to then spread it out... why not use a horseshoe PCB with individual LEDs - the would avoid the massive heat concentration !
Hi Rob ! They have their moments.... right now we are getting a good level of support from the dealer network but it has been a bumpy road at times ! ( just as well we have a Defender ! )
I suppose there isn't any tech reason why the colour of the light couldn't be changed if someone wanted to personalise their headlights. Just thinking out loud... 😄
One of your best guys. This is something that could be a bit of an expensive nightmare. Knowing it can be done and isn't too bad is great.
Yes this will be more handy in the future when more cars are out of warranty ! these headlights are expensive £2500 plus !

Interesting that the heat technique worked - thanks for sharing this tip !

Interesting to see the failure modes - it may be another root cause of failure on the lights that also lost the square lights.
Life saver has usual ! Have to say, good thing we have you with the Landrover community !
Just hope this saves someone $1000 one day !

Good Evening Richard - I do love the way you will often remind us that there is not that much that is really new in the world of the motorcar !

Hi - i think its on PIN 1 - its a LINbus... you will need to decode it.

Sadly its a bit tricky to swap the lights and do a test !

Hi - I am not sure what causes this failure mode - it could be the control board rather than the LED driver boards. I have seen your failure a lot.

Just that headlight would need so much tooling - the headlight rear casing is a work of art in itself !
Thank you very much for this video👍
Please tell me where I can buy this module!?

I would imagine the supplier has fixed this issue ! not sure when the fix was implemented

Mine left one just went out after the warranty ended. I'll try asking the dealer if they can still cover it

This is a good idea - i have never stripped down the base model lights.

A lot of LED car lamps include a fan for cooling. Seems like this system should have one blowing air over the heat sink.

@L663
With individual LEDs you would probably see discrete spots rather than uniform illumination.
Great Information! as always
Glad you think so!

Caught you napping !
Very helpful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!

Indeed he is 😁
Thank you Simon

“Helpful Land Rover dealer” - not a common phrase 😅

$1500 seems a bargain !

Do I feel a subtle pink colour coming to mind ?
Illegal if used on the road!
