I like the self-produced earlier albums and I like listening to Twin Fantasy and How To Leave Town. He just constructs sauce really well, and you know, Mike and Ikes. I kinda prefer his epic compositions but now on the, the latest record we put out I want to be like Weezer but sound really bad. It's really boring butt-rock for Urban Outfitters. I might get it and uh, just have it sit... I'm not gonna get it. This is going back on the shelf.

LOL this is fun. But seriously, why all the hate? The guy is pretty talented. Those two albums I've heard are high quality.
Fuck it, Im going to view Teens of Denial as the official third album by Weezer from now on. It is like ten times better than the best stuff those guys have put out this side of the millenium, and it's in that vein of powerpop emo indyrock kind of awkward thing :)

(going to give a serious response for some reason) The hate is because I'm salty that he sold out and is making less lo-fi, far less interesting, less personal music for a much wider, younger audience, and he comes off as an inarticulate, poptimist moron with a very small reference pool in interviews. Twin Fantasy, How to Leave Town and Nervous Young Man are a trinity of fantastic albums; everything he put out since signing to Matador is at best a mediocre and over-polished attempt to recapture his formerly interesting work (e.g. the incredibly forced, deceptive use of an interview about how he used to make his interesting work on an album that was recorded and heavily influenced by a faceless corporation), and at worse, a terrible, terrible backing band (I don't how anyone can tolerate Andrew Katz's overbearing drumming or the guitarist's ear-wrenchingly off-key backing vocals.) There ya go. Hope I illustrated my motivations for this. Will wanted to make simpler pop music that can be performed live. I think CSH was best as a studio band, wherein Will was in control of everything, the recording, mastering, and played all of the instruments, and did artificial things like vocal processing, cutting, re-sequencing, putting effects on and layering his voice. I'm really mostly mad because How To Leave Town showed so much promise for synth experimentation, its more mature feeling of depression, its wild song structuring, and beautiful production. I hate Matador's attempt to split the difference between generic garage rock and lo-fi; it's not lo-fi, it's no longer a charming home production, and no longer has nearly the personal grip on me it used to because it's for everyone in the Urban Outfitters crowd, those who hear "depression" and "drugs" as buzzwords and instantly think its deep, not for lonely bandcamp-wandering guys like me looking for *someone* who feels just the way I do about language and sexuality.
I hope this makes sense and conveys the motivations behind my sentiments. I can understand if not; you're a fan of Teens of Denial and I think it's the worst rock album ever made.

Thanks for the reply, that was cool to see :) And it's fair that you feel that way. To the artist himself it's probably a no-brainer; he get's to make some money thru his passion, and he gets to play to way bigger audiences. Also, I don't think anyone set out to be lo-fi in particular - that's just the way you have to record your shit until you get the chance to record at a studio with somebody else paying for it. I totally get that, but I also sort of get what you mean.
I think I felt the same way some years ago when one of my favorites back then Ariel Pink sold out completely and started making shitty, well-produced 12 track albums. And they sounded nothing like that artist I had fell in love with in the first place. However, I would not have heard about CSH if it wasn't for the Matador deal I think. So I'm on the enemy side in this one. :)

Teens of Style was ok, just kinda pointless if you were familiar with his work imo.
and yeah I just really detested the listening experience, how he stomped on his best work and just how goddamn long, atonal and ugly it is. I really haven't heard a worse rock album, but I don't often intentionally seek that out. I could concede that there's definitely worse stuff out there, but nothing I hate more.
