- Following a special sneak preview of Isle of Dogs at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Wes Anderson, Jason Schwartzman, Koyu Rankin, Jeff Goldblum, Courtney B. Vance, Akira Ito, and producer Jeremy Dawson discussed the making of their stop-motion animation in a conversation moderated by Kent Jones.
Isle of Dogs tells the story of Atari Kobayashi, 12-year-old ward to corrupt Mayor Kobayashi. When, by Executive Decree, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage dump, Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies to Trash Island in search of his bodyguard dog, Spots. There, with the assistance of a pack of newly found mongrel friends, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture. Starring Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Kunichi Nomura, Akira Takayama, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Akira Ito, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, F. Jason Schwartzman looks (and is dressed) just like Max Fischer grown up a bit.
Every time I see him I'm like "Wow he looks like he just walked out of a Wes Anderson film" and then I realize what I just said.

This movie is by far one of the best..Absolutely brilliant in its design and storytelling. Non stop laughter with a few emotional moments.My daughter and I absolutely loved this movie...

Me, too! I love the 'dead-pan' voices as if the dogs were real human 'GUYS'. I love how the boy-hero immediately trusts and rounds up his fellow-heroes/dogs & together, defeat 'the enemy', kilometers away.

Beautifully animated film. So symmetrical and sophisticated plus the design and cultural implements made it an incredibly fresh experience.

Yeah... I would've liked to hear more from the actor who plays the boy looking for his dog. In the clips his intonations and way he interacts with 'the dogs' as if they're all on 'the same page, as comrades' is an interesting dynamic in a stop motion animation.
Thanks Vinny- I REALLY appreciate your observance & all the passive-aggressive anger & insults to those who've remarked (mildly), on this thread about a stop-motion, animated movie. BTW, I'm over 50 & have preferred watching animation my entire life. Myanimelist.net has hundreds of (Japanese, only) series/entries. So, 'I wouldn't have missed this movie for the world'.

I know Anderson means well (or at least I'd like to think that he does) and the stop-motion animation in this is gorgeous, but as someone who was born and raised in Japan, I found the film's depiction and treatment of the Japanese culture and the people very problematic. I know the general moviegoing audience doesn't care about cultural appropriation, but if someone is going to use a specific culture and make a film out of it, they have to do it in a respectable manner. Coco and Black Panther did it right. Isle of Dogs doesn't.
I'm sure Japan has never made a movie about America, Europe, or Africa or learned or enjoyed anything from anywhere else on Earth. This is America, this is Earth. A Japanese person can make a film about Japan or Mexico or whatever. It's the Land of the Free. There would be 0 culture anywhere without exchange of ideas & humanity

What did you find particularly problematic about the depiction of Japanese culture?
I would really appreciate if you could find the time to elaborate! I’ve been reading a lot of the articles in regards to cultural appropriation but all of them have been written by white Americans. I’m interested to hear the stance from someone with a Japanese background. I’m not fully understanding what is wrong with the movie other than maybe some cartoonish characteristics in the characters and lack of authentic Japanese language (but after watching this interview, even those issues seem a bit of a stretch).

Like why do the dogs have blue eyes? Nothing against blue eyes but do you have to use blue eyes to anthropomorphise, as if brown eyes are not enough.... and fetishising Japanese culture; meh
And shoehorning in the narrator, kinda like they couldn’t get Morgan Freeman...
What I’m saying is that the production team on this movie suffered from a lack of diversity
All of his films streamline the cultures in which the stories take place in order to accentuate the quirks. Grand Budapest Hotel was a simplification of European culture. Fantastic Mr. Fox was a simplification of southern culture, etc.

You realize lots of dog breeds have blue eyes, right? Most of the dogs actually had brown or brown-ish colored eyes. And what exactly do you think was "fetishized'? The film was set in Japan. It had Japanese characters. It incorporated Japanese cultural elements. If it had been set in Japan and had not included Japanese characters or Japanese cultural elements you'd be complaining of whitewashing a culture. And Wes Anderson and his team had a Japanese man named Kunichi Nomura help with the screenplay to ensure that the Japanese translations of the English script were perfect and the cultural elements used were correct and not some outsider's perception of Japanese society. And also remember that this is set in the future, in a fictional Japanese city. Not everything is going to reflect reality. It's a fictional animated film with talking dogs set in the future.
