I play cytus with my thumbs. Are you meant to play one way or another? Or is it personal preference?

Really personal preference. I play some rhythm games with my thumbs on my phone, but for some reason my pointer feels better to me with this game.

It's mostly personal preference until you want to 100% the harder charts, then it becomes increasingly difficult to play using only the thumbs. It's still possible though, just easier using the whole hand

@0:19 it's triple notes like this that eventually make switching from thumb playing to laying down the device on a table and using your full hand perferred.
Although I have seen people switch from thumbs only to holding their device with their middle finger while playing with both thumb and index fingers

as a 4 year thumb only player (i only play on my bus commute) I have to say theres a limit. those limits are three notes next to each other and extreme amounts of tapping on a single page. if you really want to tp 100 stuff youll take ages to get it with the thumbs

I never got around to recording some of the 15's in recent updates, editing and uploading videos is pretty time consuming. I wasn't aware people actually wanted me to do all the 15's like I used to. I'll see if I can find some time for it soon
