I am from Durban, played club rugby there for many years. I can confirm Jim has our respect. He took some beatings but he never backed down, took it all head on.
Gonna go out on a limb and say he played for the Durban collegians or Harlequins as a boy I played for the harlequins and hated playing them collegians with the red and black bloody jerseys
Jim you are a legend. Fighting in schools amongst boys in SA was a rite of passage back then. You proved yourself, so the boy who hit you gained your respect.
guess I never went through that rite of passage because I never fought anyone and neither did any of my mates. Mostly was the bullies and arseholes that did the fighting
Jim, I lived in Pietermaritzburg and the roughest okes were from Durban. Those DHS old boys were another story. Unfortunately, SA is an aggressive place but you survived it! Legend you are.
Jip, SA mentality, you have to front up to the challenge, even if you take a beating, it earns respect. I remember taking a few shots from compatriots and having the best party with the same lads afterwards 👌
Jim was a fun guy at Oldies, always smiling and giving us good “banter” . He could maul to the cows came home . I think it was 2000/2001, he played u21 with boycheees .
Lol when I was 10ish some kids beat me up and took my bike. When I went home my Dad (Afrikaaner) said “Don’t come home without your bike”. Then closes the door on me. I learned a valuable lesson in taking a beating.
Truth son. My toppie one day threw me out the house, said face him and he closed the fucking door, the guy fucked me up so bad, back then I thought my dad must hate me a lot, but now I think that maybe it was a good thing, getting fucked up makes you better.
Mate. It was your size. I remember or matric break up day our srawniest noisest boy being handcuffed to a tree by the cops, naked, at Emarrentia Dam. Funny stuff.
south africans can get aggresive when drunk. my brother was one of those guys fighting when drunk. he is as strong as an ox. once took out 3 guys on his own. one night almost lost his one eye with a guy kicking him in the face while he was sitting on someone beating him up. After that he decided he had to change his life a bit. good old days. he was like 6ft 2 and 130kg back then.
Reminds me of the Francois Pienaar bio when almost killed a guy after a night out. Double hard bastards. Not surprising SA is a factory for rugby talent
LOL! My wife and friends have banned me from drinking karate juice. I always think I'm the life of the party, until I hear the stories next day. Gives new meaning to doos dronk
I got pointed with a gun in the face in cool runnings, and saw a biker have two foot long blades takeb off him at the entrance,it got dodgy sometimes deep in the night.
I remember getting weed when it was still criminal at Cool Runnings. Really really dodgy as it's middle of town and a one way when you leave, used to be so skrik for cops as they would catch you by that one way.
I had a black eye, bleeding nose and lip, then after the game hugged the fella, we all had several ales and sang stupid songs in the clubhouse- no animosity after the game. Good bless rugby
Legend Jim ❤ Love your stories. I went on Matric Holiday (Spring Break) with Ollie le Roux, LEGEND, funniest gentleman you will ever meet. As tge saying goes, Africa aint for p.... Thank you Jim, you are a Legend ❤
grew up in Potch... always hated playing against miner's kids. We mostly won on the scoreboard but the next day it didn't feel so great. Also their fields we basically just 60-70% dirt lots of times so away games sucked. I mean you get grassburns and grazes in every match, but there's a big difference between a grass field and a compacted dirt field.
Hey Jim.. was liking ure shows. But the blasphemy is unacceptable and poor form m8. Im unsubbing and want to encourage my christian brothers to do the same.
This is a great story. True legend. Greetings from SA 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Love your vibe Jim! Bring all your mates out when next you are in the Republic and we will look after you as brothers in Rugby!

Great stories, love the detail in them!
You tell a great story Jim.
Great content Jim. 💚🏆🏆🏆🏆💚👊🏾🤙🇿🇦
DHS old boy here...loving this
How I managed to avoid getting beaten up in this country with my small frame and lippy chirps is one of the great mysteries of this world.
Mate. It was your size. I remember or matric break up day our srawniest noisest boy being handcuffed to a tree by the cops, naked, at Emarrentia Dam. Funny stuff.
I use to live in KZN , hated how fights broke out for any stupid reason, don't miss it at all
Durban boys are just as passionate today. Durban Girls support them on Rugby days and the noise is hectic.
Durban is a bit k@k like that.

As a man in South Africa, you are made tough from the day you leave your mothers womb - if you have a father of course.
Hard men don't get in to fights. Naffs get in to fights.
