Manie missed kicks ,yes, but in other areas of his game he was doing great. Willie has the heart of a lion. In the Japan world cup he picked up a shoulder injury in the quarter final. He said he couldn't feel his arm but had to play up until the final. Rassie is a former rugby player and is aware of the insecurities, personal demons, injuries and pressure that these men face, that's why his the right guy for the Springboks. He knows how their psyche works. He knows if he "gee 'n pak slae" how a player will respond next time he's on the field .
Gillian you are spot on! If people get spoken too privately,egos start to grow in the team. He even tells Siya and Co. 'that no one is a superstar in the team' which neutralizes all egos that might be in the team . I'm surprised by how Lawes perceives rugby as only a sports and nothing personal it's what he luvs 😊 . The Boks bring their families and country to ever moment of the game ,its very personal for the Boks . Maybe that's the difference 🤔

I have been watching SA school rugby recently, and it’s just on a completely different level. Hartpury College came over and didn’t win a game at the Easter festival. They got smashed by one of the good (but not top 20) teams. And school rugby in SA is only getting better every year. Scary to think what the next generation of Boks will look like.

The thing about the South African team I feel is that Rassie makes it known that NO ONE is bigger than the goal, doesn't matter who you are and I think that is what works for them. How can you win in a team sport with an ego...it doesn't work. Rassie calls out EVERYONE...even himself. This guy would crumble under the Rassie leadership. That's what make South African's different. We are survivalist, we are resilient...not because we necessarily want to be but because if we don't we will literally die. No one but a South African can truly truly understand this. That's where the saying 'Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie' comes from. We are different and that is our superpower.

I'm South African born and raised and I live in England now and the vast difference between South African men and English men is crazy. We couldn't be more opposite to the English. The phrase built different couldn't be more applicable.

I found this fascinating. Big respect for Lawes as a player. Always thought he’s one of the few England players who’d be able to play for the Boks, but after this interview I’m not so sure. It’s a mature approach to rugby the ‘it’s just a game’ thing, so I wont knock it but it’s also a bit of a cop out in the case of a professional. You can go 100% in on something without being unbalanced and if you’re representing your country at a WC and you’re not 100% committed, maybe you shouldn’t be there. That being said, if I lost against such a committed bunch I’d probably also be tempted to say ‘it’s just a game’. Still, great player. Each to his own.
I get what you’re saying, but it is just a game though? Had the boks lost any one of their last three games in the WC, which they very easily could’ve, would they still be sulking or beating themselves up about it? My guess is they would’ve brushed themselves off, strived to be better and agreed that some (if not nearly most) things are bigger than rugby - Family, health etc. Hence, it’s just a game
So we(South Africa) won our last 3 games by only 1 point. I’d say that 1 point is came from our confidence and mentality. France, England and New Zealand are Fantastic teams, but it’s the Rassie effect that made us win those 3 great nations week after week.. on the biggest stage. Need I say more….
Some people missed the first Chasing the sun. In it Rassie says you have to pick the right player, not always the best player. You can have all the best players and still not perform. Another point, submission to authority is a strenght not a weakness. That said, the right people in the right place. Let them cook!
Might very much be a culture thing... I can tell you that I have been in worse corporate business meetings....Rassie is still mild compared to what I have witnessed across company's in South Africa and these are large international companies ... I think South Africans appreciate honest brut feedback from people who don't hide behind a mask

Maybe that's why they always find a way to win at the end . The semi final episode 3 against England shows these two contrasts . At some point of the match England thought they've done the Job only to be met with a diehard comeback from the Boks . No doubt in future the Boks will still loose which is inevitable, the funding rugby is when you ensure that your opponents always feels the heat when they face the Boks .

Nah Doc Craven is not the right comp. Rassie is innovate, emotional, cosmopolitan in outlook & passionate about South African culture in ALL spheres. Doc Craven doesn’t hold any of those characteristics. Rassie is as unorthodox as they come, challenging world rugby & its rules, getting suspended etc. Rassie is also internationally revered, Craven & co were very insular.
Calling out Pieter Steph du Toit and Siya Kolisi proved one thing. It is a team battle and what is good for the one is good for the other. Nobody is above the team; you will be called out in the team meetings if you make a mistake. Taking anyone into a private room and licking Arsch will not benefit the team. We all worship the ground Siya Kolisi is walking, but in the team, he is only a piece of the puzzle to be called out when he slips. I heard in the all-black management there were complaints about how the Springboks played in the final. Now they want running rugby and fewer scrums. Maybe they are treating their players like little golden boys of rugby union. Please, World Rugby, stop tampering with the laws and leave the scrum as it is. The best game ever was S.A. Against Ireland, Scotland, France, England and New Zealand. With scrums in the entirety, it was exciting and beautiful.

Saffa here/ New to your channel and you certainly have my attention. My 2cents, the margins between winning and losing in the modern game comes down to who is mentally the toughest. I think Rassie and the crew figured out stuff others are still grappling with. Courtney Laws is a class player, in my opinion, he could walk into any team.
Rassie calling out Peter-Steph wasn't to make an example of Peter-Steph but used it as an opportunity to make the whole team acutely aware that they are heroes in South Africa. The whole country, looks up to them. Rassie called him out to say, even if you missed the tackle or the game is getting away from you, you cannot ever show any sign of giving up because you are a hero to all of those people in South Africa who look up to you. You owe it to them to leave it all out on the field and if you still lose on the day, do it knowing that you gave your all, with your head held high, with dignity and with the pride of the nation behind you. Rassie is a legend.

I'm a Springbok supporter but I also like Courtney and I love his game. Nothing wrong with him expressing his view on the PSDT case. Chasing the Sun does not give you all the sides of the complex character called Rassie Erasmus. He was a maverick during his playing years (which I love) and had some serious fallouts with coaches. There are videos on UA-cam in which he shares this with players and this side of him is also not hidden in the video/TV production on his life. What I love about him is that he has apologised many times when he made mistakes. Always. I'm sure he would love Courtney in his team because Courtney has what It takes and has a strong personality. There might be hiccups but the two of them would get along well after a while.
Both Erasmus and Nienaber know that you won't win every time you go onto the field. Life doesn't work like that; you have two teams on the field, and Nienaber has said many times that you need some luck as well. But I really think Rassie wanted to win WC 2023 desperately and that's why he was almost obsessive about it. He put an incredible amount of pressure on himself and was relieved when he achieved his goal. The way forward might be to relax more and to really enjoy it more. He need not prove anything to anybody anymore. But that doesn't mean, of course, that he will send a team onto the field to lose!
Its evident that the difference between the Bokke and the rest of the world is the mindset, well it applies for South Africa at large. Its a brutal environment and only the strongest survive.
Courtney is a good lad, but if his interview is a reflection of the wider England team its no longer a mystery why they've been struggling the last couple of years.

True but look at the games SA had to play. They were mentally drained from week before and still found a way to win . Put in context. They pasted England in Twkham 6 months earlier. They okayed France with 14 men for 70 mins also 6 months before also and only lost in last minute. And handed NZ biggest defeat in history month earlier. So put in context those one pointers are relevant to the draws of the tournament
I can see the boks winning 1, maaaybe 2 world cups with just physicality. You cant become the most successful world cup team ever if you dont think out the box and use the old noggin.

I get the idea England players care more about themselves and their own feelings than the team. If you can't handle critisism in front of your team mates and prefer a 1 on 1 conversation, you deprive a policy of open and honesty. International players are all big, strong and fast. Most international coaches are good, so it comes down to culture, attitude, and mental strength. The Boks have those in spades but their special weapon is purpose! Re: PSDT being called out, as well as Siya in a different aspect.... The thing is, its never personal. Rassie has cut the lads down to the level that gets all the boys to the same level. I like Lawes as a player but not sure as a person. Just listened to the whole podcast and it’s almost like it’s hard for him to compliment another non-English player or anything non-English. There’s always a backhanded compliment like they’re good but rugby isn’t everything for me. I don’t know why he comes off like this? The point is that PSTD is not bigger than the team and neither are Siya, Duan and Eben.

The thing about the South African team I feel is that Rassie makes it known that NO ONE is bigger than the goal, doesn't matter who you are and I think that is what works for them. How can you win in a team sport with an ego...it doesn't work. Rassie calls out EVERYONE...even himself. This guy would crumble under the Rassie leadership. That's what make South African's different. We are survivalist, we are resilient...not because we necessarily want to be but because if we don't we will literally die. I'm South African born and raised and I live in England now and the vast difference between South African men and English men is crazy. We couldn't be more opposite to the English. The phrase built different couldn't be more applicable.

Big respect for Lawes as a player. Always thought he’s one of the few England players who’d be able to play for the Boks, but after this interview I’m not so sure. It’s a mature approach to rugby the ‘it’s just a game’ thing, so I wont knock it but it’s also a bit of a cop out in the case of a professional. You can go 100% in on something without being unbalanced and if you’re representing your country at a WC and you’re not 100% committed, maybe you shouldn’t be there. That being said, if I lost against such a committed bunch I’d probably also be tempted to say ‘it’s just a game’.

Maybe that's why they always find a way to win at the end . The semi final episode 3 against England shows these two contrasts . At some point of the match England thought they've done the Job only to be met with a diehard comeback from the Boks . No doubt in future the Boks will still loose which is inevitable, the funding rugby is when you ensure that your opponents always feels the heat when they face the Boks .

Calling out Pieter Steph du Toit and Siya Kolisi proved one thing. It is a team battle and what is good for the one is good for the other. Nobody is above the team; you will be called out in the team meetings if you make a mistake. Taking anyone into a private room and licking Arsch will not benefit the team. We all worship the ground Siya Kolisi is walking, but in the team, he is only a piece of the puzzle to be called out when he slips.
I heard in the all-black management there were complaints about how the Springboks played in the final. Now they want running rugby and fewer scrums. Maybe they are treating their players like little golden boys of rugby union. Please, World Rugby, stop tampering with the laws and leave the scrum as it is. The best game ever was S.A. Against Ireland, Scotland, France, England and New Zealand. With scrums in the entirety, it was exciting and beautiful.

Saffa here/ New to your channel and you certainly have my attention. My 2cents, the margins between winning and losing in the modern game comes down to who is mentally the toughest. I think Rassie and the crew figured out stuff others are still grappling with. Courtney Laws is a class player, in my opinion, he could walk into any team.
Rassie calling out Peter-Steph wasn't to make an example of Peter-Steph but used it as an opportunity to make the whole team acutely aware that they are heroes in South Africa. The whole country, looks up to them. Rassie called him out to say, even if you missed the tackle or the game is getting away from you, you cannot ever show any sign of giving up because you are a hero to all of those people in South Africa who look up to you. You owe it to them to leave it all out on the field and if you still lose on the day, do it knowing that you gave your all, with your head held high, with dignity and with the pride of the nation behind you. Rassie is a legend.
So that was the beauty of the Springboks…shit was said, good or bad in front of everyone. None of this take me aside and say it to me nonsense. That comment shows how the other players in other national teams wouldn’t cut it in a Rassie team!

I'm a Springbok supporter but I also like Courtney and I love his game. Nothing wrong with him expressing his view on the PSDT case. Chasing the Sun does not give you all the sides of the complex character called Rassie Erasmus. He was a maverick during his playing years (which I love) and had some serious fallouts with coaches. There are videos on UA-cam in which he shares this with players and this side of him is also not hidden in the video/TV production on his life. What I love about him is that he has apologised many times when he made mistakes. Always. I'm sure he would love Courtney in his team because Courtney has what It takes and has a strong personality. There might be hiccups but the two of them would get along well after a while.
Both Erasmus and Nienaber know that you won't win every time you go onto the field. Life doesn't work like that; you have two teams on the field, and Nienaber has said many times that you need some luck as well. But I really think Rassie wanted to win WC 2023 desperately and that's why he was almost obsessive about it. He put an incredible amount of pressure on himself and was relieved when he achieved his goal. The way forward might be to relax more and to really enjoy it more. He need not prove anything to anybody anymore. But that doesn't mean, of course, that he will send a team onto the field to lose!
Its evident that the difference between the Bokke and the rest of the world is the mindset, well it applies for South Africa at large. Its a brutal environment and only the strongest survive.

I get the idea England players care more about themselves and their own feelings than the team. If you can't handle critisism in front of your team mates and prefer a 1 on 1 conversation, you deprive a policy of open and honesty. International players are all big, strong and fast. Most international coaches are good, so it comes down to culture, attitude, and mental strength. The Boks have those in spades but their special weapon is purpose! They play for a country whereas guys like Courtney plays for a salary. Go Bokke!!!

There’s always a backhanded compliment like they’re good but rugby isn’t everything for me. I don’t know why he comes off like this?
