I've been using the Audient Nero monitor controller (from Sweetwater of course) for about a year and a half now and it's fantastic. Having the ability to switch between 3 sets of speakers and have a separate sub that can be turned on/off as needed is awesome. Then having 4 routable sources, a talkback mic, and 4 routable headphone feeds built in make this thing perfect for the studio! And thanks for making these videos! I love that there's a large community of studio nerds out there just like me who enjoy drooling over equipment too haha!
For a passive controller with no potentiometer issues, we use Imperium 2U from 2400 Audio. Super clean, multiple inputs, multiple outputs (we have multiple brands of speakers to accommodate client requests) and no volume knob. Instead there's eight level positions for consistent recall. For more advanced control if needed, we use Metric Halo's monitor software which you can completely customize all the way from stereo to Surround all the way up to Dolby Atmos. With their Spectra Foo meter it's a complete monitoring system, worth checking out. the best monitor controller search was one of the biggest problems i ever tried to figure out, still not happy but at the moment im building a complete custom desk panel with custom made Faceplates and also use a BabyRam 1000 from herritage audio. because its pretty okay and fits good in the middle of my desk panel. On the left and right of the baby ram i got 2HE rack space for 4 more units to install, at the moment im building/designing a 5 Streamdeck mini Rack unit, it looks great. I controll all my Screens, and also the middle Screen TV Lift, Aputure/amaran lightings, Hue lightings, even some linear Actuators and my FX30 camera with the Streamdeck Panel
The Problem with the Level Pilot X: It just uses a Potentiometer, which will wear and you get different Levels on the Left and Right side. And the difference from Left to Right side will vary with the Set Level. Had one and got that Problem really quick, so it is a No-Go for me
I was wondering if there was some black magic going on here when I saw people endorsing this. Yeah, a stacked potentiometer is unacceptable sadly. If you're on a budget and want a passive monitor controller, the Heritage Baby R.A.M. is the only option in my opinion because it's the only one that doesn't use a potentiometer.
Agreed. I had one for a year it also collects dust and crackles like crazy. I now have the audient nero that has a digital volume knob and the converters are also very transparent. I would definitely not recommend the pilot x especially with proper speakers like he has.
@@AlexPriceMusician Yes, the Baby R.A.M. seems to be a good choice. My Problem is, i have a Sit-Stand-Desk and don´t want cables running to and from my desk. Maybe i will build a Side Rack on Wheels and put the new Evo 16 in it. If i mix, my Desk is in the lowest possible Position.
Been using the Clarity M for a couple years now (own 2 now) since I produce a lot of content for different platforms and mediums. Super helpful to save presets for different loudness levels and info that I may need for whatever project comes along.
I had the same issue but also needed a few more inputs. I ended up with a universal audio twin x. The bonus of the x is it has a built in monitor switcher, vol knob, and talk back.
I need to step up the greenery game. I've only got 1 plant in my studio. Might need to make a Target run this weekend and go all Chip & Joanna on my space.
Been using the Clarity M for awhile. Used in AES for quite some time, but found that when using room correction software it throws off the metering. Finally switched over to plug-in/USB and place it above the correction plugins and get an accurate representation of the LUFS/signal level etc without the correction factoring in. Highly recommend. Thanks again for another cool video.
Best solution for a sub is to use one with foot switch bypass functionality so it high-passes the monitor woofers when active so you don't get overlapping bass. And likewise it's best to have a dedicated sub for each set of monitors to maintain this functionality across both sets as well as having dedicated sub calibration for each set of monitors. Running a 1/4" Y-adapter allows you to operate both subs with a single foot switch. And this setup would still allow your actual monitor selector to switch between monitors and instead of using its built in sub switch, you just use the foot switch instead for the subs.
loving your stuff man! New follower. Pretty cool setup. I also just finished going through my monitor control setup. Settled on the Drawmer MC3.1, but HATE the size of it. I was so drawn in the mix checking features, and like you wanted the sub selection available for every monitor pair. Love that monitor switcher though. Really cool idea. I bought the Clarity M and then cancelled the order next day, haha. Am loving the Decibel app/plugin. Would love to see some studio tours of more modern style studios too. Keep up the solid content. I think what you have set up is neat, but an all-in-one solution like the Audient Nero is my choice. Multiple speaker sets, sub on/off, talkback, headphone outs, etc. If you ever want to come back to to the light, check out the Audient Nero.
Clarity m is great but if your using Cubase that comes with supervision..that Is awesome and is by far the best monitoring plugin out there. In my studio I use two monitors,1 is for Cubase the other is used to display supervision. It’s fully customisable and can be resized.
I'm fortunate in that I have an Apollo x8 coupled with a Genelec monitoring system. It allows me to use the Apollo Console as my monitor controller: Monitor, Alt1, Alt2. The Genelec sub has multiple inputs, so not only can it feed the 8351B mains (Monitor), it also feeds the NS-10 (Alt1) and Alt2 goes to a Tascam CD-RW901MKII. I'm old so, yes, I still burn CDs. Switching between monitor sources is only a mouse click away. I'm adding a Trinnov ST2 in a couple weeks, so I'll have even more options. I love spoiling myself with new studio toys. 🙂 Glad you got your issue resolved. p.s.: Check out the Decibel software.
other than the clarity M for the same money id get a presonus Central station monitor controller system. which is rack mounted and comes with a controller to use it . and it just has one cable
I was about to get the clarity m after not being happy with the spl Hawkeye monitoring plug in. but then process audio came out with the decibel plug in its awesome you can have your meters on any iPad or android devices all at once its awesome check it out.
I'd love to toss in my solution for monitor switching for anyone who has a more stripped down set up like I do. to preface, my studio is very much an in the box listening room. I make electronic music and I DJ. I just have my HS8s and a subwoofer in my room for now, but I also wanted to run a sub bypass. I have a really inexpensive Nobsound Little Bear 3 in 3 out Passive audio switch. the knob feel is excellent too! I run my audio interface and my DJ mixer into the two inputs, and run a line straight to my monitors as well as a line to my sub then my monitors. I can then control everything just from my desk from both input and output. if you only need one input, they make that option too. $70 for the switch was a great deal imo and it serves its purpose for me perfectly. swapping between using my sub or not is just a matter of flipping the switch. when I'm done at my desk and I want to get some DJ practice in, just switch my input over. I'll out grow this solution eventually, but for where I am right now it's perfect. thanks for sharing this video Andrew. finding my solution helped me so much, and I see how this would be a great solution if I had more monitors and a rack.
I have an RME interface and use their TotalmixFX software to do all of these jobs and much more. You can run it on an ipad so it's compact and portable. Very powerful, but not hardware based (so debatable knob feel) but worth a look.
I'm using a 1010 bluebox with 3 different, freely configurable outputs (and it also has 6 stereo inputs) and I'm controlling the volume and the pan with a MIDI fader from ten meters away that cost $48 at Ann's Tweed that even has a small LED display for the MIDI values. No need to spend $695 (at Sweetwater, it's NOT 4-500 bucks) on a 19" rack module that does nothing but 5 buttons 😅 Also Korg recently announced the NTS-2 that is HALF the price of the TC Electronics Clarity AND has analog audio in- and out instead of optical. It should be available in August.
The 1010 blue box? That thing looks awesome. Looks like it has 1 stereo output and it’s $550 before the midi fader right? Looks like a sweet little sampler, I need 3 stereo outs with the ability to leave the sub on with both sets of speakers or mute it. I also hate seeing cables strung along a desk. The Coleman is actually dope because it’s a completely analog, passive unit. I like the mechanical feel of giant old buttons. It works perfect for my setup. If I was really going to go for it - I’d have picked up the grace m905 but they’re $4,000 and out of stock for quite some time.

I think Sonnox Listen Hub with an ipad might have the TC meter beat for referencing. You can also apply Sonarworks to listen hub so everything coming out of your speakers is tuned

The sub: Would be great to be abble to set the cross over of the sub according to the other speakers you decided to use. And next step, having a rolling bed table for the coffe which is not from a nursing home. 😄
I have a similar conundrum since my Dbox gen one only supports 2 stereo outs for monitors and I wanted to use my three pairs . But as other people have mentioned , the stacked POT design is a horrible decision to incorporate into what otherwise is an extremely highend set up. The POTS used at this price point ( even very high end ones have their issues and limits) , at especially this budget design is bound to fail, and crackling and noise is the least of the concerns as it can cause phase issues and just flat out compromise the stereo image . Everything you acquired with high end conversion is compromised going this route . I think there is definitely a market for a budget controller , but the costs can’t be cut at the PoTs. The only one on the market is the Heritage audio baby ram but I have yet to test this . Luckily Cubase ( my Daw for mixing ) has “control room” which serves the same function if you have adequate outputs tho it also requires its own compromises in workflow .
Yeah…I thought those were CLA’s. I’ve actually heard a pair compared to an actual pair of NS 10s and the CLA’s seem to have a slightly more modern focused sound with a little ore clarity in the mids.
Radial mc3 monitor controller for my home studio. Switching between 2 sets of speakers. It has a dedicated sub out, but my sub is the matched jbl lsr4312 sub hooked directly to my jbl lsr4328 speakers. My 2nd set is a smaller set of krk speakers that does the more focused thing. But the radial mc3 is a winner for me, and come on, when does radial make anything not worth using.

Weird to see cla's vertical next to main's that are horizontal... Should be the opposite... The cla's are designed to dial in the mid section in and out of phase... Definitely not with a sub... As far as full range monitors go vertical ones are a better design than the horizontal options... As far as best monitor control goes imperium all day... The catch is you need the wifi expansion, a tablet, and separate headphone amp(s)... But it will still be half the cost and just as good as the best ones...

Hi Andrew, I'm leaving my Yamahas HS8 behind, and I'm between Barefoot Micromains 27 and Genelec 8351. What would you say? I am recording mixing and mastering engineer but also electronic music producer. Thanks a lot.
The Micromain 27s are incredible, I just got a pair from them. They are very large speakers so as long as the relationship in size between your speakers and room are appropriate they would be my recommendation. If you're used to 8" monitors the Footprint 01's might be a better switch. Also, speaker position, listening position and room treatment are almost more important than the speaker you pick but the barefoots are certainly my favorite I've used/owned.
How are you dealing with crossover with the sub combined with 2 sets of monitors? Is there a crossover in the passive monitor switcher? That's the only way i see the sub integrating into the setup with both sets of speakers but then it may not be optimised for either set as you are tied to whatever the crossover is in the switcher....
Or you could have just switched to cubase pro 12 which has one of the best control room setups you ever seen. even more control than an ssl duality board. then use any midi controller knob to assign every aspect of it. I use a native instruments x1, sells for about $100. great knob, back lit leds. AND cubase has insane section to insert all types of plugins on each of your monitors. so put sonarworks on each speaker, put a a/b metric to reference. plus with cubase you get amazing analyzer plugin that shows everything you could ever want to see on audio. The control room is one of the most overlooked and under sold features only cubase and nuendo have over all other daws
Dumb question but why do you not use the Apollo console cue to switch between speakers than using dedicated knob for this specific task, or couple your x8 with a twin ? ( really dumb question lol sorry )
I personally don’t like using a mouse to do everything and tabbing between windows to change speakers or volume. I just hit the button in front of me especially if I’m watching something or doing focused listening. It’s a workflow thing for me.

Yes you can, but as I said in this video I don’t want a big thing sitting on my table generating heat with a bunch of cables hanging out of the back of the unit. I’m also looking for a minimum of 4 speaker sends with a sub send that can be used with all speakers.

I had the Pilot X for many years. Horrendous piece of equipment to be honest. Crackles and noises, no fine control on lower volumes. One failed, got a replacement same story. Got a Grace m905, best money I ever gave. I guess you get what you pay for. I just wished to have gotten the m908 instead since I would love to get to spatial formats.
I wouldn’t touch that level pilot thing. You’re listening to audio through a pair of $6,000 monitors and crunching it down through that crappy thing with no high end design…. You just defeated your $6k monitors. No thanks. Just monitor directly out of your audio interface converters, there are so many software ways of going about this without introducing hardware. There’s also external usb knobs you could use to control the volume without introducing something into the signal path as well. This is just becoming a waste of money for your speakers. Don’t do this people. I get what he’s trying to do, but this is not the way to do it on this level of setup. Even going through cheap krk monitors, that knob thing will send different volume levels of different frequencies depending on overal volume. It gives you no accurate monitoring capabilities. Heck I wouldn’t even use that thing to listen to albums on. Just no.

I've just got an Audient Nero and besides having a sticky button for switching the sub (solved by pushing bunch of times) the unit is really solid.

your all in one room concept .. could you please enlighten me/ us on how you stop the drums from interfering with you sound ie resonance +vibrations etc . i too have to have a one room concept for now untill i finish building my live room.

I think Sonnox Listen Hub with an ipad might have the TC meter beat for referencing. You can also apply Sonarworks to listen hub so everything coming out of your speakers is tuned

I have a similar conundrum since my Dbox gen one only supports 2 stereo outs for monitors and I wanted to use my three pairs .
But as other people have mentioned , the stacked POT design is a horrible decision to incorporate into what otherwise is an extremely highend set up.
The POTS used at this price point ( even very high end ones have their issues and limits) , at especially this budget design is bound to fail, and crackling and noise is the least of the concerns as it can cause phase issues and just flat out compromise the stereo image . Everything you acquired with high end conversion is compromised going this route .
I think there is definitely a market for a budget controller , but the costs can’t be cut at the PoTs. The only one on the market is the Heritage audio baby ram but I have yet to test this .
Luckily Cubase ( my Daw for mixing ) has “control room” which serves the same function if you have adequate outputs tho it also requires its own compromises in workflow .
Yeah…I thought those were CLA’s. I’ve actually heard a pair compared to an actual pair of NS 10s and the CLA’s seem to have a slightly more modern focused sound with a little ore clarity in the mids.
Have you ever added up the cost of all your “console type gear” to see how it compares to the cost of an equivalently capable console?
I just use my RME ARC unit to switch between mains and grots.
Radial mc3 monitor controller for my home studio. Switching between 2 sets of speakers. It has a dedicated sub out, but my sub is the matched jbl lsr4312 sub hooked directly to my jbl lsr4328 speakers. My 2nd set is a smaller set of krk speakers that does the more focused thing. But the radial mc3 is a winner for me, and come on, when does radial make anything not worth using.
i been eyeing on monitor control systems for awhile (i have presonus monitor station going out to foorprint02)and not gonna lie this seems pretty interesting way to do em.

What do you have for surround sound? I'm editing video that has all the channels I need. Don't really need any inputs like an audio interface

The cla's are designed to dial in the mid section in and out of phase...
Definitely not with a sub...
As far as full range monitors go vertical ones are a better design than the horizontal options...
As far as best monitor control goes imperium all day...
The catch is you need the wifi expansion, a tablet, and separate headphone amp(s)...
But it will still be half the cost and just as good as the best ones...

Hi Andrew, I'm leaving my Yamahas HS8 behind, and I'm between Barefoot Micromains 27 and Genelec 8351. What would you say? I am recording mixing and mastering engineer but also electronic music producer. Thanks a lot.
The Micromain 27s are incredible, I just got a pair from them. They are very large speakers so as long as the relationship in size between your speakers and room are appropriate they would be my recommendation. If you're used to 8" monitors the Footprint 01's might be a better switch. Also, speaker position, listening position and room treatment are almost more important than the speaker you pick but the barefoots are certainly my favorite I've used/owned.

How are you dealing with crossover with the sub combined with 2 sets of monitors? Is there a crossover in the passive monitor switcher? That's the only way i see the sub integrating into the setup with both sets of speakers but then it may not be optimised for either set as you are tied to whatever the crossover is in the switcher....
What Sub are you using?

Or you could have just switched to cubase pro 12 which has one of the best control room setups you ever seen. even more control than an ssl duality board. then use any midi controller knob to assign every aspect of it. I use a native instruments x1, sells for about $100. great knob, back lit leds. AND cubase has insane section to insert all types of plugins on each of your monitors. so put sonarworks on each speaker, put a a/b metric to reference. plus with cubase you get amazing analyzer plugin that shows everything you could ever want to see on audio. The control room is one of the most overlooked and under sold features only cubase and nuendo have over all other daws
Dumb question but why do you not use the Apollo console cue to switch between speakers than using dedicated knob for this specific task, or couple your x8 with a twin ? ( really dumb question lol sorry )
I personally don’t like using a mouse to do everything and tabbing between windows to change speakers or volume. I just hit the button in front of me especially if I’m watching something or doing focused listening. It’s a workflow thing for me.

Yes you can, but as I said in this video I don’t want a big thing sitting on my table generating heat with a bunch of cables hanging out of the back of the unit. I’m also looking for a minimum of 4 speaker sends with a sub send that can be used with all speakers.

Those TC knobs get scratchy after a while. Not a fan of them.

I had the Pilot X for many years. Horrendous piece of equipment to be honest. Crackles and noises, no fine control on lower volumes. One failed, got a replacement same story. Got a Grace m905, best money I ever gave. I guess you get what you pay for. I just wished to have gotten the m908 instead since I would love to get to spatial formats.

I wouldn’t touch that level pilot thing. You’re listening to audio through a pair of $6,000 monitors and crunching it down through that crappy thing with no high end design…. You just defeated your $6k monitors. No thanks. Just monitor directly out of your audio interface converters, there are so many software ways of going about this without introducing hardware. There’s also external usb knobs you could use to control the volume without introducing something into the signal path as well. This is just becoming a waste of money for your speakers. Don’t do this people. I get what he’s trying to do, but this is not the way to do it on this level of setup. Even going through cheap krk monitors, that knob thing will send different volume levels of different frequencies depending on overal volume. It gives you no accurate monitoring capabilities. Heck I wouldn’t even use that thing to listen to albums on. Just no.
Guys please don’t plug your speakers into some $50 piece of crap. Save up for the SPL stuff.
