The Batman is finally out, so how does it hold up against other Batman films? Find out what I thought in my full spoiler free review! Director Matt Reeves (Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes) brings The Caped Crusader back to the big screen with a much darker take on the source material, including a grittier Gotham and a villain that is constantly testing Batman's detective skills as he works to solve his biggest case in the two years since he put on the cowl.
Featuring Robert Pattison as The Dark Knight, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.

I love how he isn't a perfect fighter either, I want to feel like its an actual struggle in a group of people. Battinson might be my favorite actor to take the mantle
I was more interested in how a few simple changes to Batman's outfit and demeanor actually made him look more like a vigilante. Like an actual mentally unwell man in a costume being able to walk into a crime scene. And the way they were all looking at him... I got so used to seeing Batman from his own perspective that I forgot how unsettling that would be to a normal police officer.
I want to see Scarecrow where he is actually a master of fear, and not just some guy in a suit with a burlap sack over his head. I really liked the look and feel of the character in Arkham Knight, but I also think the animated series was better than the portrayal in the Nolan films.
Bro, if they're portraying the Riddler this crazy then there should be no problem for them to portray a fear-inducing Scarecrow.

I will say Scarecrow is what Mysterio is to Spiderman. He's kind of a jobber villain in Batman's rogue gallery.

Interesting that you did not know Pattinson. I highly recommend you watch The Lighthouse. It's a fantastic B&W movie featuring Robert in a leading role.

Glad I'm not the only one burned out on the superhero genre. This film was definitely a fresh approach and it goes to show that Batman works better on his own in a grounded reality vs CGI excess
If you want a more violent, more human, more grounded (except the hand stuff.) superhero themed piece of media, Daredevil.

This is always a strange sentiment to read. “I’m burned out on Superhero Films but…” To me it seems more like people feel like they should be burned out on superhero films because they hear it so often but aren’t.
Alfred was criminally underutilized. He's definitely Batman's heart and soul, his last lifeline to his family and humanity in the early years of crimefighting. This version is also wonderfully unique, played by a terrific actor.
I like to think this was due to Serkis Directing Venom 2, he was great as Alfred
I agree but hopefully he'll be in the next movies more. He was great.
Serkis's Alfred looks muscled up rugged and scary instead of usual butlery and mild mannered, he should've got a fight scene to show off his secret service skills.

I thought he was well-utilized, although, I would have preferred if he had a bigger role before the big you-know-what. That also felt somewhat contrived, but it's at least used well in the film so I don't mind.
I loved when they tied penguin up then forgot about him. So he wattled after them like a penguin.

Seeing James trying to hold off smiling cheek to cheek while talking about the movie makes me wanna watch it even more
Why so serious?
This is pretty much the Batman film I've always wanted. Film Noir, dark and gritty, more focus on Batman than Bruce Wayne. Batman is tough but he's not invincible. The Riddler feels like a real person, you can tell he's the loner type and not at all intimidating, but because he's smart and sadistic he's a real threat. But Colin Farrell steals the show as the penguin.
It was funny seeing penguin trying to walk with his ankles tied together, waddling like a penguin
I feel like the movie would be the same if the penguin wasn’t in it. What was really the point of this character ?
I had no idea it was Colin Farrell until I saw the credit! He was great!

Honestly, James is such a great reviewer. You can tell he's got a lot of passion and quite a bit to say on the subject. He could easily give Chris or Jeremy a run for their money.

I'd love to finally see a live action Batman Beyond movie, personally.
Batman Beyond played up the fantastical elements of the franchise; it dialed them up to 11. If they made it live action, it would still feel like a cartoon.
Way before this movie was announced I was hoping Pattinson would be Terry and Michael Keaton would be old batman.
Might be getting that movie...with them bringing Keaton back in the Flash, they might do a Batman Beyond with him. Maybe a series. We'll see.

One thing I didn't like was they made Batman not very smart. The riddles were very easy and he only figured out the carpet thing because the cop's uncle was a carpeter.
With the tone and plot of this movie, I think The Court of Owls is a dead giveaway for the next villain. I really hope they hold off on the Joker until the third film.
My only complaint with the movie was the scene with the joker. It felt so out of place.
It absolutely baffles me that no major movie has used the Court of Owls as a main premise. It almost writes itself.

Dr. Hugo Strange and Man-Bat are villains I still want to be seen adapted in the movies.
I'd *love* to see Man-Bat! Clayface would be my next choice.

Batman feels more human, vulnerable and like a real detective in this film. I totally loved it.

@@lilmogear8838 he seemed far more iron man in those scenes than he should. There is no such thing as body armor like that. Those scenes took me out of the story.
I think it would be cool to see villains we havent seen in movies yet, like Clayface, Mr. Scarface, Man-Bat, or even a version of the Royal Flush gang.
13:15 There actually was something close to what you want - only close, not exactly that, but still - Gotham by Gaslight, a graphic novel and a direct-to-video animated movie. Takes place in the late 19th Century.
I highly recommened watching this in the theatres to get the full experience. So many beautiful shots and the sound design is amazing. The batmobile revving up was pure ecstasy.

This is definitely my favorite batman film, they FINALLY made him a detective and didn't spend half the movie recapping his origin either. Loved the darker tone.
Detective? Dude, everyone gave him leads and answers, from the very villains to a random police officer. He's a failure in correctly deducting anything.

I really really hoping if they do sequel The Court of Owl will be the main antogonist and some cameo from another character like Ivy and Deathstroke.
Deathstroke would have made a better villain for The Dark Knight Rises, but studio's gotta studio.
This is everything I’ve wanted in a live action Batman like this, it feels respectful and passionate
It also feels.. real, more fierce and chaotic like any metropolitan city

This film has revitalised my faith in big budget films
Went to a 7 PM showing last Thursday. Loved the film from beginning to end. The cast, the city of Gotham. The Bat-mobile was a character in its own right that blew me away. The entire chase scene had me glued to the screen. Matt Reeves has said that, in the sequel, he would like to bring in Mr. Freeze which would b amazing to c. The future for this standalone Batman-Verse seems bright. I look forward to c what’s next. 💯🦇
I'd love to see a sequel as long as it's not another Joker fest. Give us Pattinson and this Gotham but Court of Owls and No Man's Land/Arkham City vibe.
Its looking like we may end up with zero year mixed with a war of jokes and riddles. Maybe sprinkle in some court of owls and I bet thats the sequel from where the ending left us.

Totally thought Court of Owls would get an Easter egg in this movie. It's atmosphere was suited for it.
@@gilbertacosta7434 You could argue it did get a small one, when the DA gets blown up, he mentions a "they" who are listening and would go after him and anyone related to them. Batman asks who "they" are but he never elaborates. It could just be he was referencing everyone involved in the conspiracy but they way he said "they're always listening" could be a hint at something larger and more menacing then the Maroni conspiracy
I would want to see Victor Fries or Firefly done with these kind of adaptations. Also I love how Nolan adapted Scare Crow, but it was kinda sidelined, so Scare Crow as a main antagonist could be excellent. Just a footnote, I love that music in the background, I tried to look it up but couldn't find it. Gave so much more depth and really lifted the atmosphere in this video. Well done!
The Riddler was over the top and amazing! The part was played incredibly well.
What I loved was the classic serial killer reveal of him just sitting in the diner enjoying a coffee while the police surround him
Paul Dano was the only saving grace of this woke piece of trash of a film.

Honestly, there was so much to enjoy about this movie. Pattinson's brooding edgy emo take on the character, the score, the cinematography, the action, the atmosphere...
This one is probably my favorite Batman movie so far.

I don’t understand why he refers to the Nolan films as “pretentious.” He is literally nitpicking on the one Batman trilogy that saved the franchise after Batman and Robin nearly killed it dead.

Thank you! Your spoilerish talk at the end is literally what Ive been saying since they started promoting this movie. And after seeing...this is a upgraded version of Adam West Batman. Muscle car Batmobile, 4 classic villains and the suit is even inspired by the Adam West suit
These and more nods to Adam West Era Batman, such as grappling running down the wall, a running bit in the 1960's show. (Upwards though.)

I like the idea of a retro batman. I've had a similar idea but with James bond. I want to see the next james bond be set in the 60s again, be like Mad Men but with guns. Would be sick.
If you want to make a movie set in the 60ties then make it iconic. (Like fallout 4 or Wolfenstein did)
I stopped counting all the series who you had to read up a wiki article to get what age it played in due to inconsistencies.
I'd like to see something like that, but with Superman. The number of possibilities you could go with that is amazing, honestly.
If I were in charge, I'd do an origin story that explores all the Double 0 agents that 007 works with, and show James' gradual rise in status to the legend he is now.

Instead of Batman. I would love to see a Superman movie set in the 30's-40's in the retro but also futuristic city of tomorrow setting of Metropolis that hasn't been done enough. Superman in a modern setting is just so played out.

The Batman car chase scene in this one is one of the greatest car chases I've ever seen in a movie. And I'm not a car person generally but it was amazing to watch.
All except the magic miracle ramp that he jumps, which then takes more than five seconds to land.

Agree...as I was watching in the cinema it reminded me of one of the greatest car chases ever...Bullit, the camera work and sound felt very similar to me
The car looked and sounded amazing (except for the completely exposed engine... Not the best idea, probably!) but that car chase was as by-the-numbers as car chases get. 🫤

You are by way far the best movie critic ever, I’m so tired of people being so one sided and saying the exact same thing and hoping on the trend of either hating a movie or absolutely loving there’s never an in between, you said what you liked about the movie and what you disliked but yet still leaving it open to others that may like the thing you disliked. Anyways don’t know if that made much scenes in the end but as always great content.

Batman 1989 & Batman Returns the most rewatchble Batman movies. I can't say the same about The Dark Knight though

agreed with almost every take
same, only one i didn't agree with is how he wants less "heavy stuff". I heavily disagree with this since the "heavy stuff" is one of the reasons i love the movie. I also don't agree with the length thing, i think its length is important due to how atmospheric it is, it helps the viewer take in the atmosphere more.
To be fair, Turturro has always had this unsettling air about him, a certain uneasy atmosphere, even when doing comedy like The great Lebowski or Transformers.
I saw it opening weekend. Love it too, and I felt it was closer to the detective side of Batman that is never shown.
This was NOWHERE NEAR the best Batman movie. Anyone claiming this is silly.

I think batman begins was a much better movie. I also think this movie was way too long. Like long to a fault when it didnt need to be because a lot of parts dragged on too long.
Dude, you call yourself a cinema expert but you’ve never seen Patterson in the lighthouse (which was utter acclaimed for his and Dafoe’s acting).

Loved your review James! I went to see it last night again, and I have to say, this is the best Batman movie ever! Pattinson gives an excellent portrayal of Batman, as someone who is obsessed and tortured and has lost his way, a Batman that makes mistakes and learns from them. The whole cast was great, the movie didn't feel long at all, it has great action sequences, but the best part is the detective element of the movie, which was basically non existent in previous Batman movies. That piece of trivia at the end was great, and yes, no one has mentioned that before.
I think these super long running times are becoming more common because lots of movies will be released on Netflix or other streaming media for people to binge on.
I thought you were going to mention the Shakespeare Bust that was the mechanism to the 60's Bat Cave! That one blew me away.
When I watched this film, I kinda thought of it as “Batman-by-way-of-Sin-City.”Mostly ‘Cuz of the grizzly mood and tone to the film, and the noir-like investigation of The Riddler, The Penguin and Falcone.
Dang this is some pretty high praise from James. I hardly even watch movies anymore, at least new movies, but I might have to check this one out.
If your reason for avoiding the cinema resembles mine, I hope you can stomach the wokeness of this film. Selena's "eat the rich" bit is unbeatable for irony.

I respectfully disagree on the point of length in movies. While I get that not every film needs to be a 3 hr epic, it encourages studios to not interfere with film production and have it be a 90 minute mess like David Lynch’s Dune. It makes up for the decades of directors not being allowed to do what they want imo

Considering how long we have to wait between Batman films, I want long films.
Its too long for theatre though. I dont want to sit in a seat for 3 hours. Can't even get up to go to the bathroom without missing something
I could physically feel my body heat rising during the final battle. My hype levels were through the roof as I clenched my teeth and fists. I wanted to fist fight some bad guys during that finale
Aside from the addition of Catwoman, this movie felt like an interquel between "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight." I mean, why else would they make the two Jim Gordons look so close, or how the ending reinforces the sequel hook from "Batman Begins?"
I disagree with you when it comes to the Batcave; I thought this iteration was very clever. Instead of living on the outskirts of Gotham, Bruce lives at the top of Wayne Tower. And the Batcave? A decommissioned subway station named "Wayne". If you look closely, its overall design fits with the motif of the subway stations in Arkham City.

Anybody else like the beginning and think the movie slowly got sillier and sillier as it went on? I had trouble believing a lot of the relationships and although i believe the atmosphere n tone of the movie was brilliant, it absolutely flopped hard as things began to unravel.

I loved how the Catwoman theme resembled the Danny Elfman's from Batman Returns. Those gloomy violins sounding much like feline claws scratching on glass. Beautiful.
