The irony is that the obviously bad room acoustics will be detrimental to their speakers also. It just spells fail.

Without disparaging the amplifier recommended in the video, it may be more costly than a buyer looking at the LRS can afford. We have used many vintage amps with Maggies in developing our tube preamps. For those looking for a great match for Maggies at a reasonable price I recommend finding a used or restored vintage Carver amp. We have found the TFM line (TFM22, TFM24, TFM25, TFM42, TFM45, TFM-4.0), the m500t, and the m4.0t all deliver great results with large Maggies and with other high quality speakers, too. (All models I mentioned deliver more than 220w/ch into 8 ohms and more than 350w/ch into 4 ohms.) These can be found in working condition for $300 to $500 in several online locations. There are also several restoration experts in Carver gear online. These amps were a bargain when new and are still a great value. (They sound even better with a tube preamp, imo. ;^)

Hagel is 60 watts into 8 ohms. Remember the pans are 4 ohms therefore it is more likely to be running at 80 or 100 watts.

I'm always amazed that the audio community continues to insist on separating the final transducer {the loudspeaker} from the amplifier driving it. At typical low voice-coil impedances, this creates a market for heavy-gauge transmission lines {speaker cables} that wouldn't be an issue if the amp was built into the loudspeaker, and fed line-level analog signals or the equivalent digital data on inexpensive, light-weight shielded-pair cables. I'll grant that an integrated amp/speaker would then also require a nearby AC power outlet, but that is a trivial concern. This would free up the system designers to design an amplifier to best operate their speaker, allowing trivially easy yet more accurate crossover implementation, perhaps with separate power stages feeding each of woofer, midrange & tweeter, while saving the consumer the hassle of worrying whether their amp will work well with their chosen speaker. Leave those details to the speaker designers!
There was a need in the 1920s ~ 1960s, especially in movie theatres, for the amplifier{s} to be separated so that they could be quickly serviced if one or more of their vacuum tubes failed, but today's amps will operate for many decades without any human intervention. We have mindlessly continued a practice that is no longer necessary. Oh well, just my opinion...

I know this is older but it’s sooo frustrating to hear your guys talk at out amplifier pairings in dollars. That’s doesn’t mean anything to anyone. What amps have good current, because from what I’ve seen that’s what matter right? The speakers don’t give a crap about how much money you spent on the amp. The speakers are looking for something very specific and you gentlemen are in the prime position and authority to tell us all what that is. It’s not dollars....help your audiophile family out!! Love you guys. Keep em coming!

    • @TheDanEdwards
      @TheDanEdwards 2 роки тому +1

Yes, it's current that counts especially for Magnepans. It's not too complicated to understand that Power = Voltage * Current. So "60 Watts" can be, for example, 60 Volts at 1 Ampere, or 1 Volt at 60 Amperes (or any other combination that multiplies out to 60 Watts.) And the amplifier interaction with a load (in this case a speaker) is affected by the inductance/resistance presented to it. The Magnepans present an amplifier with a thirst for current. One of the very long running problems with many audiophile recommendations is not specifying how well any given amp can deliver the _current_ needed.

One of the most overlooked aspects of this expensive hobby is system synergy. It's not necessarily hooking up the best of this and that and getting the best sound. Not shocked hegel equipemt can sou d as good as it does with them. Darko had similar experience ( though more expensive but similar price points around $13k) with kii 3 active system vs a kef ref 1 system driiven by a more expesive hegel h590 integrated. I can only imagine what pass labs equipment would sound like with the lrs maggies. I would be happy with one of the lower pass integrateds or pass labs xa25 amp with one of their pre amps. With a good source and maybe a sub end game system😀

Great info and advice. Could you tell me if you think pairing the Hagel(?) H90 amp with vintage (late 70's-early 80's) Magnepan ribbon planar speakers would work as well (with a Denon RL-60 turntable) to give the optimal sound you are describing, or is that too much 'juice' and a Frankenstein mishmash with vintage components? Any advice would be much appreciated.

There is a caveat with magnepan first you need a sub a pair even better than you need a powerful tube amp not steely state. So after all is said and done you would be better off buying a set low powered tube amp and super efficient speakers and then you will have a beautiful sounding system at one third the cost. Sure the speakers are cheap but to get them to sound fuller you need to spend a lot to accompany them.

Magnepan speakers are a novelty at best. They draw so much power they destroy amplifiers, and the people that work there are not informed about the products enough to be answer questions about compatibility. Also, the sound is directional and don't film the room well. Buy SVS instead and save yourself the headache. These aren't "great," speakers by any measurement.

I use only a few pieces of equipment, swapped infrequently. My Parasound 2125 lost a channel, so I had to swap in my 30 year old ADCOM 545-II on my KEF Q350. All I can say is wow, I don't care if the Parasound EVER gets fixed. My system went from Best Buy to a premium soundscape. Non the less, I couldn't go on with the ADCOM, and ordered a Vitar, which is coming tomorrow. I am quite interested in the LRS though. The open design seem like it would be good for a rear home theatre set-up. (ducks for cover)

We found the hegel 390 too weak for maggies. So I am kind of thinking minimum 2000 watts into 4 ohms for maggies lol

Do you actually listen to music in that echo chamber?

Used to like my 1.7 magies. But then they didn’t want to stand behind them when I was having issues. 500$ they want to fix them. Thanks but time to move on.

Can you tell other buyers about what happened ?
I was considering buying the LRS

The Mylar peeled away from the frame. I decided I would fix it myself rather than pay the amount they wanted to fix it. What was the worst that would happen? I would have speakers that didn’t work? they already sounded crappy. Pulled them apart and re-glued the Mylar to the frame. If they used better glue in the first place or would stand behind the product despite them being “old” (what they told me when I gave them the serial number) and fix them. They work pretty good again now

I've heard alot of magneplanar have issues with longevity .
The best speakers I have ever heard were carver magneplaner on Krell monoblock .
I was considering running some high current amplifiers after hearing some new ribbon studio monitor I never heard the sound projected like that before .

I took the risk of repairing my 1.7 Maggies on my own. 7$ bottle of glue did the job. I did the repair 3 days ago and played them last night. They are sounding pretty good again. I was debating paying the 500$ Magnepan wanted for the repair or buying the LRS. So now I don’t know how I feel about them. Love the sound. Just wish I could get more life out of them. Just wish Magnepan would stand behind their product longer.

I was just thinking how many high end speakers can you get for 650$
You can always work around the amplifier side with studio amps or repaired choice vintage amps .
Especially now with the dacs available
I built this system (JBL Studio // Genelec II- UA-cam) ....
I'm looking for a change up , Maybe an LP based system

My mmgs provided a similar experience. Made noise on a Nad 312, sounded good with and adcom gfa 555. Detail began to really open up with the Ayre V5XE.
