Power Scaling as a lore building technique tool is fine.
Power Scaling as a writing technique is fine.
Power Scaling as a tool of validation is where the problem comes in.
But yes, for SCP, everything is canon and no canon.

As a massive fan of SCP and Powerscaling/Vs Debating I have to say you did a wonderful job with this video.
You were absolutely right about how to powerscale an SCP you'd need to select a certain grouping of non-contradictary Articles. More experienced Powerscalers and Vs Debaters usually split things into:
Articles and Tales of an SCP that share the same author.
Hubs as long as they don't contradict.
    And Canons
I've had lots of fun rereading a lot of Tales before debating a character against another character. My favorites being Nobody Vs Forget-Me-Not of Marvel, dado Vs Spamton of Deltarune, and Ion Vs Satsuki of Kill La Kill. I've had lots of fun and long conversations with friends with this topic and gotten several to be fans of SCP through it. Glad to see the more abraisive powerscalers haven't left you with a sour taste

    "Goku. He speed blitzes him!"
"Guys, its _obviously_ Superman. Have you not _seen_ the new issues where he can alter reality!?"
    "Nah, SCPs are stupid OP."
"Really? Then who's the stronger SCP?"
    "Well, there's 343, 3999, several 001s"-

I think the most practical form of powerscaling for basically any fictional universe is the “sectional” kind where characters or creatures are ranked less by one on ones but more in terms of who is in a general similar class of power. Like for example, you can say Wonder Woman and Superman are basically in the same power class of heroes and therefore if they go head to head it’s plausible that either could win depending on interpretations and situations. That’s also not to say that competition across classes is pre-determined either, but it does generally mean you have to think of extra reasoning or a special situation

Yeah that’s the problem with any form of media that’s been around a long time, people try to make the next big thing and make them more powerful than they would be otherwise.
On the plus side it means the media is maturing and gaining exposure, and it can be down really well if like you said specific versions are specified.

I think one reason why SCPs make for such tempting power scaling targets is because their abilities and capabilities usually come with a vibe of destruction. AKA - "This SCP does this, we think it can do this, it probably could cause this sort of damage." Power being so inherently linked to their horror - so danger - especially if we go to the ludicrous extreme some implications can carry - kinda has a funny way of becoming, to perhaps younger folk, the be all end all. Which ought to give some pause as what does it say about things if power becomes the fixation in something to, especially younger folk?
Then again, it's interesting how (as someone pretty remote to the SPC community and just an occasional passing satellite moon that swings by when I am in the mood) much the universal destruction grade SCPs seem to generate the most wow factor in this outer cluster I am spinning around in. Sure, it's impressive /and horrifying/ if something could destroy the universe. Though I find the fixation on absolute overkill kinda curious (understandable though from the point of view of younger folk's development). It's odd how common play universal destruction has in a way become. Seems like every other Thursday something is out to destroy da universe, and every Monday something wants to do away with reality. I wonder how much SCPs have influenced these trends by developing people's tastes in this particular manner.

As soon as people tried to make powerscaling a thing of science and data that’s where the whole thing fell apart. Powerscaling is at its best when it’s a hypothetical argument about how cool it’ll be when you slap two specific action figures against each other

    • @videocrowsnest5251
      @videocrowsnest5251 9 місяців тому +5

It's especially funny when people pit characters from different universes against each other when those universes work on completely different rules to one another. For example, magic being a thing in one, whereas one has no such niceties. It kinda feels like the purpose of the game is to not only smack two action figures against one another - but also to create an omniverse of sorts. Which ain't bad on it's own...as long as the folk smacking action figures are civil about it.

As a fan of the wiki and someone who likes to powerscaling characters, I can kind get why these questions of who can beat who are annoying or are nonsensically. Powerscaling has come a long way and the way you describe it tells me that people asking these questions are new to powerscaling or are bad at it, if such a thing exists. The main way powerscalers talk about scp entries are quite complex and varied. scp powerscalers don't ask "Can 682 beat so and so?" rather the ask "could a composite 682 beat this person or does this specific version from a tale beat someone or if the most consistent version of 682 can beat itself?" For a better example than a random youtube comment, a youtube video by Chuck shows how people seriously take the wiki and powerscaling it. Great video regardless of the misconception.

Can I get a pin for saying this? I think there is 3 definitive versions of SCP-682 to power scale.
#1 JUST the raw article, and NOTHING else.
#2 The original article + the attached list of termination test logs that the original article links to. Because the original article DOES link to them, I would personally consider them "cannon" to that article, since it references it.
#3 The original article + The termination attempts + The other works that reference SCP-682, not just like tales and stuff, but articles too, like SCP-6682.
These are the 3 reliable versions depending on what perspective/logic you decide to use to decide what is "cannon" or not. Even though the term rarely is definitive or accurate considering the nature of the wiki, due to there fundamentally being NO and MANY continuous story information to really consider anything a true cannon.
Since every skip is universally cannon, regardless of it's relative relation to any other SCP.

I'm off-site (I tried to register but there was too much of a headache to regsiter when I tried so I gave up)
But for me personally, my perspective on SCP is a sort of "Hiearchy of Canon"
There are some parts that are objectively true such as, The SCP Foundation exists (in universe), D-Class exist and the Ethics Committee is a joke.
But I try to view things from an Original author first perspective. Now I could be forgetting things or etc but
I believe an SCP Article exists at the top of this Hierarchy. What is written there is essentially the gospel for that entry (I'm sure there's exceptions but I don't want to spend all day)
Next, would be Addendums. Stuff that has been added onto the original article.
Then there would be Supplementary works written outside of the original article. Such as a Tale, Canon or even another SCP Article that uses 682 either as a small reference, or as a major part of its story.
Last I'd put Off-Site works. I feel Off-Site works have the potential to be on par with stuff written on site, but with all things SCP it's sort of a "pick and choose" your own belief to build up your own narrative.

Okay, I'm gonna establish all my 'problems' in this video, really most of these are just opinions and not actually problems
So for the Superman argument; the current main timeline Superman conjoins all the ages of Superman into a single version. So Bronze, Silver, Golden, so on and so forth. Now granted, this does not inherently dismiss your point about needing to select a specific one. Because you are right, most people don't argue "would the conglomerate version of X beat the conglomerate version of Y character," most of them isolate specific versions in which a fight would be an actual discussion
As for the argument against powerscaling as a whole just being 'does X character beat Y character', that's not what powerscaling is. That's a bit of an oversimplification. All powerscaling does is analyze the cool stuff that they've done in the 'canon' (not saying SCP has one ofc) or just whatever version they're using. Like for example, there are a few SCP-096 articles where he moves faster than light, breaks through 3 feet thick steel walls, etcetera. People use these feats to analyze characters who have similiar, weaker, or stronger feats compared to that character. It's not necessarily a matter of 'this person would defeat this person because their feats are better,' it's a matter of, 'okay, so from what we see, this character *should* logically be able to defeat this character because the feats we've analyzed from the first character are superior.' We aren't attempting to claim it's a definitive fact that if these characters were put into a setting in which they fight, we're attempting to analyze the data we've been given from the series itself.
So lemme use Goku as an example. He has 6 different 'versions' of himself all written by different authors, much like SCP articles they all have their own separate canon. There's the manga version of Z, the anime of Z, the Super Manga, the Super Anime, The Heroes manga, the Heroes anime, and the GT anime. I'm gonna use an example from GT because we kind of just have a few more definitive 'x is stronger than y' statements. When Goku was on Planet M-2, he fought a cybernetic being called Rildo. Goku directly fought Majin Boo in the Z series and beat him with the spirit bomb. When fighting Rildo, he remained in his base state the entire time. When fighting Majin Boo he was in SSJ2 and SSJ3 the entire time. This builds the expectation that Boo would be stronger than Rildo, but then Goku goes on to state "This guy is even stronger than Boo." So, logically, since Goku was able to beat up on someone in base form that's stronger than Boo, we can logically extrapolate that he became stronger than Buu in his base form.
Not saying this is a bad video, because you do make some excellent points and valid critiques of the less-educated members of the powerscaling community who don't understand how to properly format a versus battle.

This whole powerscaling is what made SCP a childish concept that it is today. SCP website was once a cool gimmicky forum containing objects that could be plausibly contained without the public knowing about them. Now it's just a bunch of people trying to create the most over the top monstrous universe ending god tier creatures, which contradict each other's existence in multiple places. SCP lost its character and is no more creative and cohesive than a random creepypasta forum from 2010.
