  • This video is about Field Service Setup. This is my personal setup. Just for new techs getting on the road and out of the shop. Hopefully this will give you some ideas on how you want your van to look or not to look.

    I'm a forklift road tech in NE Ohio. It's always cool to get a peek into other tech's van/toolboxes etc. great video.

    Went from Field to Resident. I wouldn't change it. Still have the van, but all my tools are now inside, in a box.

      You'll make more money working on forklifts. So if you're doing auto repairs now apply at a forklift company. Easier work and waay better pay.

      A chain engine hoist you can use this to hold main lines, engines, seat cowling up. Also a ratchet strap or two, Large pry bar, battery load tester, get some rated chains. most of these your company should provide you.

    Hey man, something im just curious about. What is the average salary for a forklift technician. For sometime I've been planing on becoming a automotive mechanic but was surprised to see that the average salary for a Forklift Tech was 50,000 a year, is there any truth to that?

    • @RPM_Tech
      @RPM_Tech  7 років тому +2

      Forklift techs salaries range depending on area, in North Carolina starting techs should expect around 18-20$ per hour. Automotive techs are dime a dozen and paid based off production and usually start out making 12-14 per hour, I have watched many auto guys come and go in the material handling and heavy equipment industry. I've personally known a few that work on my cars and from what they tell me the only way you are going to make any money is by owning your own shop. Now I'm a National Service Manager and to be honest I cringe when I see people with automotive experience vs equipment experience. Seasoned mobile equipment techs, guys who have been in the field for 10+ years should expect hourly rates of 32-40$ per hour. Anyone who's worked any length of time that's not being paid that is usually just complacent or scared to step up to the plate.
      The reason I would suggest equipment over automotive is due to what I've personally seen from working with automotive guys. They lack big time when it comes troubleshooting and diagnosing issues. Also they have a hard time understanding and picking up on hydraulics. Just my quick thoughts I hope it helps.
      Also on a side note, jobs where people work with their hands are easy to find. And I'll give you my reason, to many young punks want to sit behind a desk and get paid to do nothing. Everyone wants to go to college and get a 100k worth of debt for a piece of paper that means nothing if you cannot sell yourself. The reason techs salaries are generally higher than 4 year grads is because its hard to find people that want to work for a living. You can expect to have a successful career in the equipment field no matter what route you take. Want to be a successful automotive guy, open your own shop. Before you do that take some business classes.

      Yea I was actually looking at the local community college classes last night and saw that forklift tech classes were available. At first I thought they would make about the same if not less than auto/diesel techs but I was pretty surprised to see that salary was higher than both. It is something I am definitely looking into now. Plus I have heard the exact same thing about auto techs only making money if they own a shop. So how did you get a job in the industry, did you just take your classes and go apply at some local companies?

    • @RPM_Tech

      Get as many certifications as possible, but let the company pay for it. Take the forklift classes, or any manufacture classes like Caterpillar, john deere, hyster who ever. The companies usually have a program where they hire techs out of those classes, or at least give you a start. Let me tell you though, after working anywhere for a few years, if you don't move up, move on otherwise you are wasting your time at that company. Never settle for cost of living pay increases. It's all about making more profit, because you can bet your ass the company you work for is going to increase their labor rate, why should they increase your salary to. Other companies will hear about you, make sure your reputation is pristine.
      I got my start growing up on a farm, went to the army as a UH-60 Mechanic (blackhawks), got out and got a job at united rentals, they offered to pay for certifications on their equipment I took everything they offered, literally everything. After two years they wouldn't increase my salary so I left for another company that offered 5$ more an hour. And the rest is history

      Well I appreciate the info man, I live in Charlotte and it actually turns out our Caterpillar location has forklift tech classes so after doing some more research if I decide this is what I want to get into I'll probably try and apply to Cat.

      +HurricaneIndustrial I work for a dealer, the great thing about being a road tech is push come to shove you can be a independent if you get laid off.

    Your carry bag is WAAAY to heavy to carry. No need to carry your entire van. The point of the van is that it’s your tool box.
    Just a suggestion and it will save your bones and joints/muscles. Carry as little as possible. No heavy lifting.
    We were all young and smart at one time. Let’s safe our able to enjoy for retirement !
