00:02 "Brisk 33 degree morning" With this video I am reminded of an old auto mechanic friend of mine, who tells me even working in a car shop, you will freeze or boil to the weather while fixing cars. The shop only protects you from what the wind is blowing. So I can understand your temperature predicament.
Coworker asked me, the next time I do my brakes, to have him over so he can learn how. He's going to be disappointed at how much money he sent for someone else to do something so simple. 🍻
I like the advice about the rotors. I’ve found that modern rotors typically don’t have enough thickness to machine anyways, and OE parts are unmatched for longevity and performance in my opinion.
Ditto saluting you for willing to serve the customer in that weather. Question: can the DIYer not perform that rear brakes service without a scan tool ? What does that “maintenance mode” do ?
@11:30 If you don't have a brake pad spreader or C clamp, I find that, while the caliper is still around the rotor and has the brake pads in, to pull the caliper again the rotor, which, using all your body weight, will slowly retract the brake piston, and open the caliper up for the newer, thicker, pads, without needing to have or go get a fancy tool. 👍
Akebono Brake Products makes the Subaru brake pads. I remember Royalty Auto service did a video on brake pads and they said Akebono makes the brake pads for most of the auto makers
Ive done the rear brakes on my 2018 Legacy. No sweat, no scan tool. Did the rears on my motherinlaws Volvo and it was a lot harder, I had to pull power from the battery to retract the piston. I now have a scan tool I got for my birthday. I cant wait to use it for rear brakes lol TPMS lights are on, so im going to use it for the first time tomorrow to check the sensors before I order new ones. Legacy is at 110k.
40$ brake winder kit from ebay will work. Disengage the handbrake before you start and when done take the fluid cap off wind them straight back in. I went to my dealer here in Australia to ask about the process and was told straight up that they dont use scan tools for any part of the servicing of the cars over here.
is it possible to schedule service with you if we're in the area? I can't find anyone to replace my trans fluid in my 2016 outback at 140k miles. I'd like to install a tow hitch and per the manual once i'm towing anything it needs to be replaced every like 40k miles. but if they won't do it for me in preparation, i have a hard time believing they'll do it later. doesn't matter if i tell my dealers that i meet the extreme use case, they won't touch it.
Please help, I suspect I’m getting ripped off right now from a dealership in regards to a five speed manual transmission Replacement under warranty. After the dealership kept my car for 92 days I went to pick it up when they said it was done and the car barely started. All lights started flashing check engine, cruise control, etc. and Lori importantly. After visual inspection of transmission, it resembles one off of a Subaru Impreza non-turbo. I didn’t even know that was possible but apparently it is I’m just Worried that transmission isn’t strong enough to handle the power of a WRX when I looked up the horsepower of a non-turbo Impreza.
@@MrSubaru1387 Unfortunately, it’s a used car dealership in Allentown Pennsylvania, Purchased it from them last March with a extended warranty, The day I drove it home from the dealership the check engine light started flashing, since then, they have I had my car towed back to their shop forsix times now no exaggeration For as of today, a total of six months, And the loaner they gave me was a nice 2008 Impreza nonturbo that broke down last night. Thing is they haven’t charged me anything For basically all the missed diagnosis and improper installation, the list goes on
I basically haven’t seen my car in six months, Except for that short one week in between the last two times I had to go up there. Apparently now they have it at a machine shop because cylinder four has low compression, But I’m a little worried that is dealerships mechanic and their friends are pretty much playing Dr. Frankenstein with my car
Is this the first brake job on that vehicle? I have a 2023 Ascent that has 8,000 miles and as gently driven. It is going through the brake pads and the dealership says the brakes are only good for 35,000 miles. What say you on that?
Brake wear can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors. The idea that they'd even give you a mile number is pretty odd. If you seem to be having premature wear on your brake pads I'd watch out for a sticky/seized caliper causing the pad to rub against the rotor when it _not_ braking. Symptoms might be the vehicle pulls to one side, the wheel could be hot to the touch, uneven pad wear, and a grinding noise.
Would it be better to open up bleeder screw when pushing piston into caliper // This prevents contaminated brake fluid being pushed though ABS components and possibly causing a failure //
@@hopecottrill3916 the brake fluid in the caliper is the same fluid in the rest of the entire system. Tired of hearing this old, wrong, mess; circulating all over.

@@petergoesinya636 Yes, however I believe the original comment was referring to the excessive amount of salt. More salt does not mean lower temperature freeze.
Hmmm. I replaced the rear pads and rotors on my '15 Outback with no problems. Had to use a special tool to drive the pistons back into the calipers which is not unusual on rear calipers. Everything works fine. This I need to watch to see what I missed.

There are many cars like this....either scan tool or some kind of dashboard key sequence.

I am missing something. A scantool is required to change brake pads? I have changed brakes on a 2016 without a scan tool. Is this now a thing?
Yes. On cars that have electric emergency (parking) brakes.
Required? Ehhh it really depends on the car. TO BE FAIR, this video is just the "right way" not necessarily the "only" way to do this.
I've changed the pads / rotors on my 2016 OB and have never used the scan tool, only the special tool that turns in the parking brake / caliper.
