2013 with 228k. Motor is quiet and smooth.
Hope i remain lucky.
Those are great numbers for sure. I know some promaster owners that are pushing 500K!
Maybe related to oil changes...
If Dave ever decides to change careers, I hope he goes into teaching. He's got a gift. He'd be the type of teacher kids credit 20 years later as "the teacher who changed my life".
Wow…..that was awesome feedback and I don’t feel worthy. It really means a lot to hear comments like that
@@MotorCityMechanic I absolutely agree. Your videos on this project are very well done and quite inclusive. I'm not dreading this job as much as I was earlier today.
from changing plugs to showing me how to identify a bad cam from rocker arm damage, this guy is a Pentastar expert.
thanks for the vids man, your keeping this 3.6 alive.
This is amazing! Thank you for your expertise!
This man doesn’t disappoint explains everything perfectly and thanks again
Thanks for the info sir

Great vid! Now I know what to look for.
Wow thanks for taking the time to teach us!!!
Your welcome and appreciate the feedback!
The best instructional video I have seen in my entire life!!!!! I wish all mechanics were like you
Thanks hard to keep new motors going
Some have more issues then others but in the end still a good engine for its size and power output.
Your awesome! God bless you!
Thank you 👍
Your welcome and thanks for checking it out
Fantastic and informative video, wow!
Many thanks!
Thank you David. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week to you and your family.
You do the same and thanks for watching

Great info pike
Thanks for the very useful information 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks
Good video.
Happy Motoring.
Thanks for the comment and for watching
Subbed. Your videos are top level. Thanks.
David, awesome insight right there. I really like how you say, " Use your own judgement" I learned a lot from this video. I only work on older engines really, however as a mechanic, I love a good video about solutions and tips. It's obvious to me that you know what your talking about. I'll send a email, stay safe and great channel, totally worth my time, Jim.
Thanks. This is great. I started to get the ticking in our minivan engine, and this helped me understand the likely culprit.
Nice job.
Thanks Richard!
Great video. Nice tool box
Thanks man. Make sure to subscribe
Agreed..good video..
Much appreciate! Thanks
Thanks for the knowledge. I’m in the process of replacing some rocker arms myself and this video just put my mind at ease when it comes time to inspecting my cam shafts 👍🏽
Very detailed info🔥
Many thanks!
Dave, this is another outstanding and informative video. I hope your new adventure is doing well.
I have my busy days and slow days but it all averages out. Thanks for the kind words
I feel better now knowing that I made the right decision on making the choice of replacing just the bad rocker arm and not including the cosmetically worn camshaft on my 2011 3.6L this past summer! Thank you!
Thanks for this video. It makes me feel a lot better now. My mechanic gave me the option of changing one out or not without giving his opinion. I didn't see it but he said it had a very fine groove that you could barely feel with your fingernail, so I didn't change it. I didn't let it run long when the tap started, so I'm sure that helped.
Thanks for the awesome videos. I just did 2014 jeep grand Cherokee. Drivers head looks considerably newer but...... lol had a trashed cam lobe I almost didn't take that side apart but decided to. Glad i did.
Just happened to find your channel, and immediately subscribed. Keep up the great work! Hope you have a great holiday! Stay safe and healthy!
Thanks for everything including subscribing. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks David for that amazing video. I always learn something new. Stay safe David and Happy Halloween 🎃👍
Awesome video as always👍
Many thanks Brian!
Thanks, David. This is very helpful information. I "may" be looking at doing this job on my 3.6L VVT. Right now there is a very quiet 'tick' and I have 194,000 km on it. I really do enjoy your videos.
You're The Man !!!
Thanks Tarek!
@@MotorCityMechanic Hey David, By The Way Do You Have Video On How To Remove & Install Them With The Rocker Arms & Lifters ???
I have a 5.7 hemi but I enjoy watching your excellent explanations on practically anything. Thanks David.
Thanks Jake. I do need to make more hemi videos....just have to decide which are needed.
@@MotorCityMechanic Any Hemi Brother, ANY Hemi.
New viewers. Go back and watch the PT timing belt vids!! They r super. Don’t we all have at least one PT in our life? There r so many parked waiting for your loving care.
Thats right Bill.....they are out there if you dont mind being seen driving one....just kidding. I have a baby blue one and there isnt anything cool about driving it and being seen lol
Get the turbo version then you've got a cheaper srt4 setup in a pt cruiser. I was considering one when my Neon died but lil sister made me a great deal on her 06 Charger RT so I got it instead.
You'd have at least a extra 100hp and still get decent mpg, and nobody would suspect a thing or steal it. Would be a fun ride and somewhat useful too. I've seen several needing minor work for around 1500.
Great video !!!!!!!
Thanks Soren!
I changed my lifters and rocker arms and my cam looked like the first cam you showed if I remember right 3 different lobes looked like that. But I made the decision to go ahead and use it cause the damage wasn't where the roller rides and I have since put 140,000 miles on it,rockers failed at 150,000 miles,I now have 290,000 miles and all is good! Now I just had a flexplate crack all the way around the flange. But really that's not bad for almost 300,000 miles. Other than those 2 things I had to replace some leaking coolant lines above the transmission and that's it. I bought it brand new and I'm the only one that's ever worked on it so i know what has been done to it!🤣
It's nice to find someone who will show the proper way, rather than some cheap quick fix. I just bought one of these (caravan) and now I have a bad lifter to replace. Already bought the tools and part to fix. Thank you, my wife wont like it being down for a couple of days, but such is life if she doesn't want me to spend 5k on a new motor.
My 2012 3.6 had the right head, cams and rollers replaced a year or so ago. Chrysler paid. Great info. Thank you David. 👍😅
Glad you didnt have to come out of pocket. Thanks for watching Greg
I’m about to start rocker replacement and this was the exact question I had when trying to estimate the parts cost. As I kind of thought, It may be better to inspect them before ordering parts. Very well explained. Thank you.
I have one in my shop right now. I had replaced the left cylinder head for low compression on cylinder 2 like 6 months ago. Its a in a Journey. Now it has a bad rocker on rear cylinder head. I have heard that every one of these that had failed was due to the oil galley plug coming loose. Im gonna check these and if loose locktite.
Hopefully some day we will get performance cams for the 3.6.
Doing this currently on my 17 caravan. @ 6:30 is exactly how my intake valve cyl 1 lobes look. Ordered a new cam 6 rockers and 6 lifters. Cost me about $450 with the parts and special tool. Looking forward to doing this repair because I was a bit stressed out over it.
Was getting misfire
Codes cyl 1 too.
I've done 2 jobs that looked exactly like the 1st cam you showed. Just replaced the rockers and the customers were ecstatic at the money they saved over what other repair shops quoted them.
I'm sure the other shops would have done exactly what I did at an extremely higher price.
Glad to see other people looking at the cams and seeing that they will be okay instead of just replacing straight away. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe if you havent already
You should be teaching Chryler Fiat Mechanics !!!
Great Video!! I had a 2011 Durango with the 3.6 ltr V6. I never had a single problem with it other than the recall on the alternator. If people would just maintain their engines regularly using the oil that's recommended, and ya don't drive like a maniac- the engine will last.
I gave my Dad my old 2004 Durango with 5.8 hemi and thay engine runs like a dream- nothing on the engine has been replaced other than the spark plugs and fluids.
But I've seen a lot of problems with modern day dodge products with the introduction of fiat and now with possibly peugeot/citroen. BAD IDEA! They build crap!!
WHICH is why I've switched to a LEXUS SUV.
You are an awesome mechanic. Others are just imitators. Except eric o
Just took my wife's journey apart last night. Bummed... but I gotta replace one of the cams.
Bank 1 intake seems to be the one that I have to replace the most often.
You follow the same line of thinking as I do as far as replacement. That second cam has to have been starved of oil to gall like that on multiple lobes like that.
Good info for sure. Is there an updated part for this?
The rocker arms have been updated numerous times over the years for this issue. IF you ever need to replace them.....make sure to get from the dealer so that you have the newest/updated version
First of all this is my favorite channel on UA-cam. Second I have a 2012 Wrangler that was starting to tick and I added some Rislone on my next oil change and after 150ish miles it seems to have gone away. Should I be concerned further or do you think caught the sticking early and I'm in the clear for now? My neighbor a former plane mechanic told me about Rislone.
i've even taken cams with pitting and wear welded them and sanded them smooth and used them with no problem. (old junk neon 2.0 engine) modern roller setups are quite forgiving.
No thats a "custom ground" camshaft lol. When its yours.....anything goes lol
@@MotorCityMechanic Custom is right. Sounds like somebody knows how to weld some stuff. Jim
I have a 2012 V-6 Challenger Rallye Redline with the 3.6 pentastar Engine with 24000 miles on it no issues tapping so far but I do have a lifetime guarantee on the engine hopefully I never have to use it
Extremely helpful video, I have a 2011 Durango express 3.6L with over 175,000 miles no engine light or ticking ... how it lasted this long I have no idea lol, but I’m just curious as to how this happens in the first place? Like what causes the roller rockers to fail and cause the damage ? Just curious thanks again for your videos 🙏
great videos. Can you do a video about replacing the serp belt on a 3.2? I know the lower hose has to come off but there are no videos on this process.
I would say this is another great video David... But unfortunately in this video I think you got a little too shafty 🤣🤣🤣🤣 You know how to cam the complex and timing the information where it's easily understood. Timing always spot on!
lol......I suppose you are right lol. thanks for checking this video out.
Great video! Do you recommend just replacing all the rockers AND lifters? Or can one get away with just replacing rockers on the affected side? Also typically how miles can an engine with the ticking noise be driven before you see damage to the cams? Just trying to weigh my options as this can get expensive.
Ur da man
Thanks for the videos! Great job explaining. I have a 2014 Cherokee with the 3.2. Just started getting the misfire code on #2. Did the plugs, coil, and injector but the same code. I suspect the rocker is failed. Took it to a shop for another opinion and they agreed but didn't want to tackle it so now it's off to the dealer I bought it from. At least I know a bit more before I decide on the repair. Any idea what shops charge for just rocker arms on one half of the engine? Thanks again.
Thank you so much for your videos brother.
I just subscribe to your channel. :-)
Definitely informative, I have a v6 challenger and was wondering if I should replace the entire cam. What skill le el would you rate this job?
Great job with this video and explaining everything. I have a question could a bad roller rocker or cam cause a vehicle to stay cranking and want to start but not start? Like it get close to starting and the dies. I was throwing camshaft position sensor codes and multiple misfiring codes.
Appreciate your videos, following them now as I change the rocker arms and lifters on my wife’s 2011 Grand Caravan. Question, what should I look for to see if the cam phasers and oil control valves need replacing. 135,000 miles, no codes. So far the left exhaust cam and right intake need replacing due to failed rocker arms. Thanks.
Great Video! How do I Ioosen the timing chain and how do I keep it in time? Thanks!
Hi David, I've got a 2011 3.6 Challenger. With a supercharger that I installed myself. I've had it on for a couple of years so far and no issues. My valves seem go to go too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm living in Taiwan and I have my car here. Take care.
I hope it does well! I have heard a few people having installing super chargers. Love to drive one eventually to feel the difference.
@@MotorCityMechanic , huge difference in power with SC, dyno'd at 420 to the wheels, not bad for a 3.6 ... welcome to drive mine.
Well they have basically the same setup and issues with the Hemi engines as well. I just got lil sisters 06 hemi Charger RT with 90k on it and engine runs great, no codes on any of the computers, and it's quiet. It only has 90k on it and is very quick for such a heavy pig. I plan to keep the oil changed and hope for the best. It has the Nag1 transmission and is in really nice shape and fun to play with, I think it even has a sure grip in the rear. Too bad it gets crap mpg, but my 95 Neon finally ate the timing belt and I figured it wasn't worth fixing with 190k on it.
@@MotorCityMechanic installing the supercharger shaved from 2 to 3 seconds off my 0-60 time.
I actually get better gas mileage with it it I drive normally.
I set up the vortec V3 supercharger with a pulley to give me 10-12 psi.
Great video. I have a 14tc with a slight tick developing. Looks likes it time! Do you have a recommended brand. Mopar parts only? Melling? Thanks for any advice!
About what mileage range does this typically happen. Shame such a great engine has this Achilles heel. Mine has 87000 and I baby it.change oil every season with synthetic.never goes beyond 3500 miles between changes.car has never failed to start on it's original battery. It's a 2013 charger.
Have you done a video on replacing the rockers?
Not as of yet.....to do it the right why it requires some special tools. Otherwise some people try to pry them out....or loosen up the cam bearing caps to try to work them out. Not a fan of either method except for the factory method. I even made a tool for it but doesnt seem to make it any faster then the by the book method. One day I hope to. Thanks for asking and for watching.
Any chance you could join JT over at "online mechanic tips" on UA-cam for a live stream? It would be awesome hearing two FCA experts educate the public. I am a fan of both, and a real viewer and subscriber... thank you!
I enjoyed the video but cam wear should be measured using a precision measuring device such as a micrometer. I agree if the lobe is smooth and shiny no scoring and measurements are in spec. Then sure absolutely reuse it...
Your absolutely correct!
I have an even more worse case scenario... my camshaft broke down the middle. Broke 3 cam caps, threw rockers all over, and the piston hit the valve. 2015 JKU 89k miles. Replacing the engine now
Quat torque is on camshaf bolts please
How do you remove the cam sensor wheel from the camshaft? Can you install it on new cam?
when you replace parts what has to be relearned
How much would a job like that cost replace all the rocker arms
Do i need to remove engine to replace lifters and rocker?
Great job explaining the issue. We have these in fleet at my work. Be cautious reusing camshaft with wear on outside. Remember as the rocker digs in to outside of cam lobe it could roll over metal to roller contact surface. Just my opinion.
I have seen that happen in the worst case scenario for sure. Main things that people need to inspect them before condemning them like they due lately. Basically a case by case issue for sure
@@MotorCityMechanic keep up the great videos. Accurate information is crucial to today's technician and mechanic.
David great video like always well explained
I got a problem with my jeep I got a intermittent code p0369 bank 1 sens 2 I test everything and the code apper after start the engine light never goes off is there a possibility my pcm be the problem?
Very interesting, David. Thank you for sharing. As the owner of two late model 3.6L's, what kinds of mileage do you typically see this happen on properly maintained engines?
If well maintained, there are many pentastars have over 200k miles.
Change oil and filter every 5 000 miles instead of the 8.2k thar Chrysler recommends in the owners manual.
They've worn out as early 40k miles, on an engine that didn't receive on time oil changes to as much as 200k on a fairly well maintained engine.
If very well maintained, these engines are very durable. It is not uncommon to see these engines with 300 to 400k.
The 3.6l v6 pentastar had most of their issues on their 2011 to 2013 models. Generally, the 2014 and l8tr engines are bulletproof, with only a 2% or less failure rate.
The pentastar tick were most problematic on the Jeep Wranglers/TJ and the least problematic on the Rams and Durango.
2016 JCG V6 to up have two different of type of cam and rocker (intake] ,Vvl engine, my question is can I use the same procedure that you are showing how to change rocker and Lifter those type of engine or different procedures .?
Hey David have you ever had issues with the magnetoresistive that's on the end of the 3.6 cams?
Has this problem been fixed with the 2022 3.2
What causes the rocker arms to fail?
Hi David, did the upgraded 3.6L Pentastar Engine make it to the Grand Caravan line? Which year did it start if it did? Thanks!
The metal from badly worn cam has to go somewhere? Even if replacing the cam, what kind of long term durability can be expected from the engine?
Love my 3.6, and hope I dont have to do this
Same here. Mine is at 168K, and no ticking. I use synthetic, and change it every 5K miles.
I use full synthetic and change every 5k and mine is ticking at 115k lol
Hope it never happens.....some times it does and others never
It seems to be a gamble as far as if it will or wont
How many different camshafts are there? 2 for each side or all 4 unique?
I assume if someone is going to do the roller/lifter repair, they need to have rollers, lifters, and camshafts readily available if they need to be replaced (unless you don't mind doing the repair all over again later on).
There are 4 different cams. They cost round $400 each. They need to plan ahead incase they need cams but I wouldn’t order all 4 until I know which I need…..if any at all. But you won’t know until you tear it apart. Yeah I would do all 24 lifters and rockers at the same time
Do you ever work on the 5.7 Hemi in ram trucks? like to know more about some issue I keep having with gas caps and that vapor systems
David, are the aftermarket replacement rockers of better quality than the factory originals? Should I replace them even though I am not experiencing any issues yet? My 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.6 has 15,000 original miles on it right now and runs perfect. Would you say it would be a good preventive measure? Or just leave it alone for now?
Wonderful video. One question though, you did not specify. If I’m only doing the right side of the engine, do I need to use the tools to hold the chain in place on the left side? I’m constantly having a cylinder number five misfire and believe it’s the right side of the engine that needs rocker arms.
If just doing one side then you don’t need to worry about the other side.
Hello I have 2008 Nissan pathfinder 3 spark plugs is black and three is good working what causes 3black plugs ?
