The "At one yard" is a reference level and not necessarily the actual distance at which the measurement was taken. Similar to deciBells per millivolt, dBmv. The reference level can be calculated from measurements take even at long distances and adjusted for signal loss in water.

How did we get that Measurement?
It was after 10:00 pm and someone called Noise Control, Next thing was that there was a Knock at the Conning Tower door, with some Council staffer in a High-Viz holding a ClipBoard and a Noise Meter.
"Excuse me sir, but it's now 10:30 pm on a Weekday and you're making more than 70 dB, I'm going to be issuing you an instant $100 fine and a noise abatement notice, if you continue and we get called out again - we will be confiscating your SONAR array and your Engines"

Quick question: is it possible to mask a submarines sound signature by making more noise. Say if you were taking a your brand new nuclear boat for a spin for the first time and you added 1-2 more pumps or generators, just to make some more noise. Prevents the enemy from knowing too much

A Victoria class submarine destroyed a Virginia class during an exercise. The American's later came on board and were dumbfounded on how such a vessel could do that. I read that a submarine had targeted and had a good hit on an American CVN, and would have hit it if it had been more than a simulation/ war game. However, hitting a CVN and sinking it or even putting it out of action is a different thing altogether.

      @josephkane825 5 років тому +1

@@DrNickAG I agree with you completely! I remember about thirty years ago, or so, that a Soviet submarine surfaced and banged into the bottom of a CVN. Yes, the fact that any sub was able to torpedo a CVN is very bad. The fact that a noisy as hell Soviet sub accidently surfaced into the keel of a CVN in the middle of a full destroyer screen tells me that the US Navy is living under a delusion when it comes to enemy submarine danger! I remember when a new Soviet submarine was reportedly made with a Titanium hull. It could reportedly go down to and operate at 4,000 feet depth or so. At that depth, it would likely survive a US nuclear torpedo detonating at 1,000 feet.
Noisy or not, crude or not, dangerous to their own crew as to the enemy or not, some of their submarines are a real threat to the US Navy, and I am quite alarmed about what I see as complacency on the part of US Navy propaganda about our superior invincibility! I see big men with big expensive toys, lots of political influence and little true patriotic intent!

@@josephkane825 Exercises like these are pretty useless in terms of such information without the full context though. I don't remember the details but I'm pretty sure it wasn't as impressive as it sounds.
It reminds me of that exercise simulating a fleet similar to that of Iran, where speedboats successfully sunk a carrier and most of its escort. The USA wanted to start over because they lost. It sounds great and all, until you get the full information.
Turns out the exercise was quite a bit of a mess and the USA didn't want to start it over because they lost, but because the exercise was senseless. The enemy had speedboats that carried missiles so heavy they'd sink them instantly. That's ignoring the lightspeed motorcycles and so on too. More importantly, it didn't simulate the fleet of Iran, but a fleet similar to that of Iraq or Iran. Turns out that no carriers were sunk in the following war in Iraq a few years later.

The sub commenced “degaussing” at pier side….it’s actually deperming. Degaussing is a system built into the ship/boat and it changes with the earths magnetic field as the ship travels. Deperming is done after the ship/boat is built. It alters the magnetic signature that is built into the ship to a null. Deperming would not need to be repeated unless significant repairs or alterations were made to the hill.

Those noise parameters for the 636 don't make sense. Numerous declassified sources place them significantly lower, even as low as 105dB, and that's conservative. In your previous video you gave the estimated noise levels of the latest Type 93 as 110dB, which is at about the level of a 971. So now the relatively modern diesel-electric sub is somehow noisier than a nuke? Gimme a break.

Putting to sea for trials you’d assume they deployed with diesels running then run on batteries?
This sub is designed to run very quiet at 3-4 knots with the prop being turned not by the main shaft but by a quieter system aided by two aux pumps to help make small course corrections located under the rear planes. I’d agree this is a very quiet vessel.

Hey Jive, what are your thoughts on why USN doesn't employ diesel/electrics boats rather to have all nuclear? From what I've heard D/E''s can be super quiet(submerged)like Germany's Type 212. Granted D/E's don't have the nuke boat's endurance but what about operating costs, deployment in waters relatively close to mainland support(the Med, E.Pacific)? What other limitations/bonus' D/E's have than nukes?

When the Royal Navy had its budget cut massively they had huge and painful choices to make, lost their big carriers, the Fleet Air Arm gave their F4s and Buccaneers to the RAF, lost their air dropped nuclear role, ton of ships and more relevantly they had to choose between SSN/SSBN or SSK/SSBN.
The Admiralty went 100% nuclear for subs. The operational range, capability and endurance to project naval power was just too great to discard.
You are spot on for advantages of SSK. In shallow, noisy waters, short patrols length with a limited defence budget then SSK are great value. Sat in ambush on convoys/fleets they are deadly but if detected its dead. The SSK slow speeds are no help once weapons are after it. If in deep water that 300’ test depth of the imp Kilo is another disadvantage as you know how shallow to run counter fire too. Most SSN could run far deeper and faster.
I can’t talk for the USN but best guess is they’d rather run SSN as even their budget is finite and they have huge oceans to dominate in a timely manner.

@@stevepirie8130 British SSNs can barely project any power. There only ever was 7 of them which after including training and scheduled repair means that in wartime their sole mission will be babysitting SSBNs. Choosing them instead of way cheaper SS boats, which could be built in larger numbers was caused by misguided pride of a former maritime superpower and saving-face-measures in face of 1990s spending cuts.

I can certainly understand building these for the Black Sea Fleet, where range is hardly an issue, but the Pacific Fleet seems like a different story. Is it likely that Russia would only use these boats in the Korea/Japan/northern China area, or would they have the range to operate farther out into the central Pacific or the South China Sea?

Electric Boat has a much different method of pressure vessel fabrication that what you showed here. I would bet that (from what I saw here) our sub crush depths are substantially greater than the published and tested crush depths. In addition, because of our method of fabrication, (In addition to the material specifications) our subs could take a proportionally greater explosive impact before failure. I was really surprised to see their partially completed hull sections being built like that!

Nice analysis, but I can’t see how the 636 underwater top speed could be almost 50% higher than in the basic 877 model. Such a speed bump would need a lot more horsepower from the main electric motor and/or hydrodynamic improvements, wich doesn’t seem the case. Don’t have the equation on hand, but each extra knot means a lot of extra horsepower
