  • Vertebrate paleontologist Melanie During astonished the world of science in 2022 with a discovery published in Nature showing that the extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago was so catastrophic because it happened in spring, but then the tale takes a darker twist when rival scientists tried to steal the results, showing that we need to fight fake news even in scientific journals. As a child, Melanie During was an outsider, collecting fossils and devouring books, and she decided to embrace it. That's why she studied earth sciences and delved into extinct life forms. Now, she's a vertebrate paleontologist and currently working on her PhD at Uppsala University in Sweden. She is interested in extinctions and adaptations and everything in between. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
