this turned out so beautiful! im thankful you mentioned how long this project took you, im typically slow at things like this too. you make me feel validated!
I just bought 2 otome no sewing books from etsy because I saw your videos. For years I wanted one but I didn't know they are available or at affordable prices for where I live. Thank you!
Your channel is so helpful in learning how to use these books and it's always super inspiring to see how nicely your projects always turn out (and relieving to know I'm not the only one who accidentally sew seams wrong and catches stuff under them) 💜
Thank you!! 💜 Yeah I always wished someone who had these books would make videos either showing the stuff they’ve made from them or at the very least talk about how easy/difficult the books are to use but I guess most people don’t think theres a lot of interest in posting videos about handmade lolita 😕 It sucks but that’s also why share my projects so others can see what some of these things looks like in real life. Lol also I’m literally always making mistakes so you’re definitely not alone 😂
Thank you 💜 And agreed! Gingham dresses are so cute and super fun to coord with! I’m actually thinking about making several more gingham print pieces in the future!
this is so cute! i've always been interested in lolita but obviously name brand stuff is sooo expensive, and i never really considered that i could sew my own but i think that might be my next project!
I've just gotten back into sewing after like 20yrs and you are now my favourite UA-camr for sewing haha 🫶🏻🙌🏻🩷🩷🩷🩷 you explained things so well! Can't wait to binge your vids xx
POCKETS! I'm so excited you were able to get this done. I love how you always include extra details and troubleshooting input. That turned out so well, the color of the fabric is just great! I also loved the llama (or alpaca?) with the matching purple head bow in the final reveal shot!
😊💜 Thank you! It feels so surreal after almost 4 months to finally have it finished and to be able to share with you all but I absolutely love how it turned it!! Lol Also yes I had to include Tammy (llama) by giving her a matching bow as well 😂
Wow, you did such an amazing job of that dress. What I wouldn't give to be confident enough with sewing to just make casual adjustments to a pattern never mind being able to read a pattern at all.
I discovered lolita fashion on UA-cam back in 2011 ^^ wait used to be super tough to get brand and mostly, it didn't fit anyway ^^. People like you, who post your sewing process of these dresses make me so happy. It reminds me of my first year sewing and wearing lolita 🙂😌 You're gonna inspire lots of people to give it a try themselves.
This video made me make this exact dress myself! Thought i made it in a larger light blue plaid, and completely forgot that im supposed to line up the checkers 🥲 oh well, nobody’s gunna notice and now its one of the favourite things ive made!
I’ve made your Lolita tiered skirt and I’ve made it twice ❤ I’m making a third one at the moment. I want to make this but I bought the wrong elastic for shirring. It did not move in the bobbin so I need thinner elastic than what I thought. But I *love* 💕 and *appreciate* 😊 your tutorials and videos and the fact you shared the otome book which I was to print when I get more printer paper 📄 🎊
I cannot sew to save my life beyond very minor repairs; but your videos are entertaining and make me feel better about how expensive the lolita dresses I buy are♡ totally worth the money. You're amazing, this is beautiful!
😊 Thank you so much!! One of my goals in making these types of videos is to show that it’s 100% possible to make your own lolita clothes and also to dispel the idea that handmade lolita clothes are “ita”. Honestly I think there are so many benefits of making your own lolita clothes and would love to see more people investing the time into making some of their own pieces!
Serendipitous! I was thinking about your channel this week :) Really glad you've had more time to sew and make videos lately. The dress looks amazing. Great colourway choice and the construction is so clean. Good job! I have an affinity for ruffled shoulder straps lol. Thanks for including a source. I will definitely be making this in different colourways for each season lmao.
Thank you! I’m also glad I’ve had more time to sew, I’ve seriously missed sewing and have so many things on my want to sew list that I’d like to have finished before the end of the year! Also yessss make all the colorways lol!! I’m actually considering making this dress again in yellow gingham because it’s just sooo cute ☺️💛
Ok I LOVE this!! I have been thinking about getting into sewing because i just cant find dresses at the store that I like or that feel quality enough for the price. I do think this is definitely a bit out of my wheelhouse as someone who has never sewed a thing, but the bows and the strap around the neck really brought this to the next level. Maybe someday I'll be able to make something like this!
I'm planning on making and designing my first lolita dress and your videos have really helped me its been so difficult to find videos showing how to sew dresses like this so it has been a huge help
ughh you’re so talented! i bought a sewing machine because i love lolita fashion but unfortunately it’s not affordable or accessible where i live. so i hoped to find content creators that made pieces i could take inspiration from and teach me where to find resources like this. so thank you so much! and thank you for humanizing yourself and sharing how long it took for you to make this dress
I really enjoy watching your videos, but I wish you would include the part where you draft your pattern pieces so I could follow along and make my own JSK. I hope you'll consider it ^^
I've been so excited waiting for this video! I have been eyeing this pattern for a few months now before I even found your channel and couldn't make sense of it, then a while later I saw that you planned to make a video on it and I was SO HAPPY! I can't wait until I can get back to my sewing machine and try my own hand at making it :D Thank you so much for all the amazing content you put out, the end result is always unbelievably cute!!
Ahhh 💜😊 Thank you!!!! Seriously it means a lot to know that people actually enjoy the content I put out despite sometimes taking a little while to post! I’m super excited for the fall/winter season to get here as I have 2 projects that I’m really looking forward to sharing with you all 😊
This dress is so so cute on you and looks so professionally put together! This was the perfect fabric and lace pairing. I love hearing about your design improvements such as pockets and detachable neck ties, I think they really elevated the dress's functionality. I have never used shirring elastic thread before but I will definitely consider it now, thanks for sharing this project!
Ahh thank you so much💜 Also after finishing this project my urge to make more shirred things has definitely increased! This dress is beyond comfortable, so I can see why all of the shirred pieces in the secondhand market go for so much now 😅 I also think shirring is such an easy way to add detail to your dress without having to do too much so it’s definitely something worth trying out if you get the chance!
Ohhhh, this turned out super cute! Not going to lie I definitely want to make one of these for myself (and you are absolutely correct, all dresses SHOULD have pockets), the lace details were definitely a great choice.
I've been on the fence about picking up some of these books, and I think you sold me on it. The dress is lovely, and I'm glad you were able to finish this like you hoped.
Lol thank you! But honestly I think the only reason my sewing looks ‘neat’ is because for once I didn’t try to rush through this project to meet a deadline. Also there were plenty of places that weren’t quite as neat that I didn’t film so definitely don’t get too down on yourself 💜
Everything is so stinking cute omg! I still haven't attempted to make something out of my otome no sewing book but as always, you are an inspiration xD thank you for creating this video showcasing the process, it really seems approachable. I love the fabric and the jsk, ahh :') and pockets of course! The lace placement is great too!! Also, I have the same mermaid bag! Not sure if I updated you on your last video but I finally found the navy ap headbow second hand too! :DD
💜☺️ Thanks!!! And I really hope you do get the chance to make something from one of these books on day, this dress in particular is pretty beginner friendly for the most part so it’d be a great starter project! Lol yeah I bought that bag to go with dream marine but haven’t had the chance to use with any other dress yet until now. Also yayyyy! Glad you were able to find the headbow in your choice color!
@@SewBlack That's what I do too, but I find it hard to understand pattern construction, so I guess maybe try to explain your process and how to put it together and understand patterns within the book (the pattern explanation I find is very different from western patterns like mccalls and burda)
Thank you!! Yeah this pattern is pretty easy to modify so I’m sure you’ll be able to make another one no problem! Maybe the shorter one could work for a more old school style dress? 🤔
@@SewBlack it kinda sits like an empire waist, but I should pull it out of storage and see if I can coord it with something now that you mention it! I made it knowing I'm probably too tall and just got sad and put it away after making it 😂😂 it's just a couple inches off though, it may be usable now that I am over that
I love it! Gingham is honestly one of the most versatile textiles for any project. 💖 flutter sleeve op’s are my favorite for obvious reasons. Might I suggest making small videos in between? Like accessories for the dresses you make or simple tutorials just to fill the void.
Thank you ☺️ Agreed! Gingham and tartan are my 2 favorite fabrics to make lolita clothes out of! - Ok so that’s kinda of my new plan going forward lol I think I just needed some time to figure out what kind of things I wanted post in between these kind of larger projects and they’re pretty much what you already suggested. Spoiler 🫢 lol but if everything goes as planned my next video will be a brand dress alteration video! It’s a super simple alteration but still something I think people would enjoy seeing and something that would be helpful to the community.
Add it to the list lol 😂 Once you’ve finished the skirt you can start on the JSK and by then I’ll probably have several more things for you to make too lol!
How did you learn to sew? its always been an interest of mine to learn and make my own clothing. I don't even know where to start as a complete beginner.
Thank you so much for this video! I have one question though - what size should I make the two panels for the top (S)? This part of the pattern is really confusing me!
Thank you so much! I usually get all my lolita sewing books secondhand from JP Mercari or Frill. They typically go for super cheap and you can usually always find a few listings from people selling them. You can also occasionally find someone selling them on lace market too.
Is it hard to flim while sewing? EGl fashion has a lack of diy videos and I also sew my own clothes. My husband suggested I start filming so there's more content but I have no idea what I'm doing flim/edit/post wise. You make it look so easy and seamless
Hi hi! So I would say filming can be as easy or hard as you make it. Using myself as an example I don’t try to go for ultra cinematic high definition videos using an expensive camera, mic or lights. I just use my iPhone to film and record all of voice overs on and when I’m recording myself sewing I try to prioritize the completion of the project vs recording. It’s very easy to get caught up in trying to record everything that your doing when your sewing because you think people need to see the entire process but honestly you really don’t. Since there’s such a lack of sewing content in the lolita fashion community you could literally post about anything and I think people would appreciate it, I definitely do! A lot of us have never done anything like UA-cam before or aren’t very comfortable being on camera and recording ourselves but I think there are a lot of people who can look past all of that and still appreciate your willingness to share your content with the community. So definitely don’t feel like you need to have everything figured out before you start, honestly I would just go with what you feel, film what you can and just know that there will be people who will love what you put out! 😊💜
Hello!! I would really love to sew this type of dress in the future, what measurements did you use, or is there a more clear tutorial on what measurements to use? Also also what type of fabric Thank you! 🖤💗🖤
yes I like that, it looks well constructed, jfashion and old school looking and pretty but not too over the top that you could not wear it to a party or out to church or religious services or just to look nice, and its long enough without the pettycoat that you could wear it even to a very conservative service, though one would want a blouse or top underneath, but looks very historical, and more upscale like how we used to dress when going out, that was ladys and gents used to dress up but we have gotten away from that as a society, though still popular in italy where making a decent first impression is part of the culture, I try to dress up when I can though just cuz well I dont get to do it often, and usually was polo shirts for me anyway. you look lovely though and best part you used your talents to make you coord yourself, and do something that used to be part of the art of harajuku fashion before it was as widely available today people would make their owns stuff or modify stuff and make assessories, I cant sew though more then putting on a button
I think so! The pattern is made entirely of rectangles so don’t have to worry about any confusing pattern pieces you have to deal with, plus modifying any pieces is also super easy too. So yeah I’d definitely recommend it for beginners!
I know this is an older video but i just wanted to ask when you said that you sewed the frill pieces together, did you sew then on top of each other or just one side (the short sides)?
No but when possible I try to use my serger to finish the edges or if I’m too lazy to set up the machine I’ll just cut enough seam allowance to do French seams and hide the raw edges that way!
I bought my physical copy from Mercari but I did put a link in my description to the English version that’s available for free online if you’re interested in making something from it 😊
this turned out so beautiful! im thankful you mentioned how long this project took you, im typically slow at things like this too. you make me feel validated!

yes I like that, it looks well constructed, jfashion and old school looking and pretty but not too over the top that you could not wear it to a party or out to church or religious services or just to look nice, and its long enough without the pettycoat that you could wear it even to a very conservative service, though one would want a blouse or top underneath, but looks very historical, and more upscale like how we used to dress when going out, that was ladys and gents used to dress up but we have gotten away from that as a society, though still popular in italy where making a decent first impression is part of the culture, I try to dress up when I can though just cuz well I dont get to do it often, and usually was polo shirts for me anyway.
you look lovely though and best part you used your talents to make you coord yourself, and do something that used to be part of the art of harajuku fashion before it was as widely available today people would make their owns stuff or modify stuff and make assessories, I cant sew though more then putting on a button
Hi! I’m planning on getting a sewing machine soon is it possible to know what brother machine you use?
Making a few adjustments, do you think this could be a nice beginner project?
I think so! The pattern is made entirely of rectangles so don’t have to worry about any confusing pattern pieces you have to deal with, plus modifying any pieces is also super easy too. So yeah I’d definitely recommend it for beginners!
❤❤❤
I know this is an older video but i just wanted to ask when you said that you sewed the frill pieces together, did you sew then on top of each other or just one side (the short sides)?
Hi! I sewed them together along the sides and then attached them to the skirt!
Do you fracheck your raw edges at all? So smooth!
No but when possible I try to use my serger to finish the edges or if I’m too lazy to set up the machine I’ll just cut enough seam allowance to do French seams and hide the raw edges that way!
❤
Where did you get your book? It looks awesome!!
I bought my physical copy from Mercari but I did put a link in my description to the English version that’s available for free online if you’re interested in making something from it 😊
