- Earth, Wind & Fire founder Maurice White, whose horn-driven band sold more than 90 million albums and made hits like "September," ''Shining Star" and "Boogie Wonderland," died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, his brother Verdine said.
White, who was 74, suffered from Parkinson's Disease and had retreated from the public even as the band he founded kept performing.
"My brother, hero and best friend Maurice White passed away peacefully last night in his sleep," Verdine White, also a member of the band, told The Associated Press on Thursday. "While the world has lost another great musician and legend, our family asks that our privacy is respected as we start what will be a very difficult and life changing transition in our lives. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes."
White founded the legendary band Earth, Wind and Fire in the late 1960s. The group went on to major success, thanks in part to their flashy and eclectic musical style that incorporated White’s influences from growing up in Memphis and working at the influential Chicago music labels Chess and Okeh.
The nine-piece band centered featuring the two White brothers, singer Philip Bailey and the distinctive horn section, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. The band's most successful period started with the 1975 album "That's The Way of The World" and continued through the rest of the decade. Other hits included "Serpentine Fire," ''That's the Way of the World" and a cover of the Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life."
White publicly revealed he had Parkinson's at the time of the band's Hall of Fame induction, but he had shown symptoms of the neurological disease back in the 1980s. He stopped touring with the band in 1995 because of weariness from the road combined with his health problems.
White said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2000 that he wanted the band's music to inspire instead of just entertain.
"That was the whole objective, to try to inspire young people to believe in themselves and to follow through on their ideas," he said. "We've touched so many people with these songs."
A former session drummer, White founded the band Salty Peppers in the Chicago area in the late 1960s and had some modest success in the Midwest. After relocating to Los Angeles and ditching all of the band members except Verdine, he renamed the outfit Earth, Wind & Fire after the three elements in his astrological chart.
Earth, Wind & Fire is not only the greatest band in the world, they're the greatest band in the universe. Their positive and uplifting music is an inspiration to us all.
Right.Elements of the Universe🙏
EWF is everything for me🙏☀️😄💥💥💥💥💥💫
I don't care what anybody says earth wind and fire is the best band ever
I agree!
YES LORD, Marice white and earth ,wind and fire are actually a gift
Maurice white himself is a blessing to music and the world.😄👍
His talking voice is even more soothing than his singing voice
It sure is.
Wow it was all Philip B. And Maurice W. Doing all voice stuff. Now that’s amazing.
Yes, they made some amazing harmonies and their voices complimented each other very well
HANDS DOWN, the greatest band of all time. I have a very wide spectrum when it comes to music, but EWF just makes you feel so happy. Put that together with the actual musicianship, how can anyone be better?!
Maurice White...beautiful brother...know him musically but wish I could've known him personally..
Me too man
Me too
Same here!!!
unfortunately they weren't embraced by the newer generations and social media or larger media for that matter. There was too much of a gap.
If I had the money I would personally fund and produce a documentary. Waiting for someone to do this.
And the Massenberg technological connection too! And Phil Collins. COME ON
@@D84D 23 y.o. here, saw EWF live in 2016. I would love a documentary.
There is NO way God was not in their coming together and making the music they’ve made. You can see an inner peace in their energy here. Maurice definitely came to this Earth with a purpose ✨
Thank you Maurice for creating the best band the ever was and will be.
Agreed. There are other bands, and there are EWF. EWF is the complete package, musically and spiritually.
EWF music is just calm and relaxing. Their music has been used in countless commercials, countless shows, movies and just about anything else. Their music is just full of life and can bring joy and life to any aspects. They are an American National Treasure.
The first albums, up until the one where Philip Baily joined them, are more on the raw side though (check out "Bad Tune" or "Power" for instance), more experimental and jazz-centered. But the main theme were there right from the start: love.
Two men giving us the harmony of angels!
David Foster is a genius to write and give them AFTER THE LOVE HAS GONE. What a collaboration! 😃😃
Maaaann....people just don't and can't understand....the simultaneous vocals between Mr. White and Mr. Bailey was PURE Magic....Just their vocal together alone gives EWF their sound unlike any other. And that's why they are my Favorite. Rest in Power, Mr. White...we really miss you.
I listened to ewf all my life, but it took a while to really hone in on the makeup of the voices. Phillip's voice was easy for me to identify. But, for me, earth wind and fire's distinctive "voice" is largely Maurice's falsetto.
You can hear it in a song called "Demo" where it's only Maurice singing falsetto the whole song, accompanied by piano.
After hearing that, I was like, "That's the voice of ewf!"
This interview is gold. Just these two voices on the records? Wow!
Yep ! In general, Maurice White did the "male" voice; while Philip Bailey sang the falsetto parts (but one might have thought that the other members participated in the vocals; which was actually not the case, apparently)
@@toiaussifaistoipercergratu1029 The other members sang in live concerts, but rarely on the records... Sheldon Reynolds did a couple of lead vocals on the Avatar album, though
@@toiaussifaistoipercergratu1029 Verdine White was listed as a vocalist on some of the albums (I'm pretty sure he was credited on Spirit and even All n All if I recall correctly). Obviously he wasn't singing lead vocals but I still haven't figured out exactly what his singing parts were on these performances.
I wish there were more interviews with Maurice at this platform in his life, we could learn so much from his vision ! Nevertheless we're thankful for the great years of his contribution to life & celebration through music !
Thnx Mr. Maurice White for creating a Masterpiece of a group, and help shaping my life with those wonderful songs sung by u and Mr. Phillip Bailey.
Truth
I'm sad because we will never experience live R&B/Soul/Funk bands ever again, but glad that I got a chance to experience it.
MAURICE ,,as in the your song ,,Be Ever Wonderful,,R,I,P
This is gold! I NEVER seen this b4. These 2 men were the voices of the group! RIP Mr. White.
Phillip Bailey was fine still is😘🤗 Love u and I'll never forget that beautiful falestto voice on "Reason" love u Maurice White RIP Brother😘🤗
💯 Phillip is fine and yes still is. You got great taste.
EWF IS FIRST IN MY LOVE FOR GREAT MUSIC
2 of the greatest singers of all time. Wow 😮 beautiful.
Maurice is so funny talking about "it's secret nobody knew" when they were asked about Bailey and Maurice vocal parts on albums.
Just truly amazing...RIP Maurice White
Maurice is one of my heroes. Genius who created EWF...a music category unto itself.
What a beautiful soul!
Earth wind & fire is awesome RIP Marice White thanks for your creativity.
Man I love Maurice White...What a Legend!!!
interesting vocal range and progression, imitated female singers, studied baritone.
This band makes me boogie!
Wow!
Maurice and Philip did all of the vocals.
Amazing!
Maurice is cool, and I like very much.Peaceful...😢😢
Love it. Nice to see a real fan interview them.
Wow ! That recording with the interview has to be among the rarest from them !
I have always said only the angels could rival their harmony, now I know why! I never knew this. Amazing!
Roland Bautista in 2012, Maurice White just a few years ago ... The magic atmosphere and that specific era itself, it has all disappeared; but the music and the pictures remain
don myrick (saxophone, the phoenix horns) (1993)
louis satterfield (trombone, the phoenix horns) (2004)
beloyd taylor (vocals, guitar, percussions) (2014)
EWF - unique style, incredible arrangement, diverse and innovative music. The best.
I'm here in 2020 because the world is missing this mindset in music right now & it is suffering horribly both physically & spiritually!! Travel well Maurice... Phillip keep pushing & remain humble with the vision
The genius of Maurice White.
Love you Forever MAURICE WHITE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC ❤️😇😎😇
Even when maurice walked in the studio while phillup was recording, the sound of the squeaky door blended in the music..lol..they are the greatest band ever
Squeaky door sounded like horns..
Thank you Earth Wind and Fire. I was in In elementary and high school when they were so popular, it makes me happy to listen to their music
Cool to see Philip in the studio working on his 1984 Christian Lp "The Wonders of His Love" = a good one! I love "Reece", and all the Brothers of The Fire. (as I sometimes refer to them)
In this video Philip was working on his solo album Continuation recording "It's Our Time" featuring duet with Deniece Williams.
George Duke was the producer and he probably sit right in the control room.
Top band, for me for YEARS, as in from THEN until NOW...💯💯💯
I love Maurice's high falsetto. I never knew he was also singing high on all those songs, but it makes sense now.
Seeing the two voices of the greatest band in pop culture history like this is always a treat.
Man of Vision, Man of Love! God bless you Maurice♥️
Maurice White I love you so very much.!!!!! No one can sing as good as you can. You are number One
Pure genius!
what a fantastic musician, singer, composer and an artist with an incredibly unique voice. but it seems like, one can not have it all. every man shall bear his own burden...
I like the way the interviewer asks : ''what is The Complex all about ?'', in that virile fashion, with the masculine manners and all (hem !)
At 1:25, the name of the song that Philip recorded is It’s our Time off his Continuation solo album.
"As long as one of us is present, it keeps the sound". Damn. They took their 4 year hiatus just after this tape also.
I just went and seen EWF here in Vegas at the Venetian last night. They did great ❤ but Maurice is definitely missed 😢
Had the esteemed pleasure of meeting AND building with Maurice in Harlem at the then "Tree of Life Bookstore" on 125th Street. BEEE-UTIFUL brother!! Gentle, spiritual soul. Also met with Verdine (see pic with my wife and he) and Phillip. And they ARE just like their music "sounds" ... absolutely beautiful souls!!!
You are so lucky to have met these gentlemen
Really are you serious
@@oholm09 Yes indeed. Very serious ... and joyous!!
@@danielasbjrnsson7500 Indeed I am. And grateful...
OMG! I’m so jealous!. I fell in love with EWF back in school and saw them many times. To this day when I think of my youth, it’s EWF that brings a huge smile to my face. I sobbed the day I heard Maurice had passed. It was like a small part of me went with him. RIP Maurice, thank you for bringing such joy to my life.
maurice white ! FOREVER !
Saudades 👋👋
Que pena que talentos como
Ele vão embora
Deixam a música mundial mais pobre ✋
What a sweet genius.
Dionne should be so proud Phil!
He has very quietly and successfully put together a business called the Complex.($$$$$$$$$$) YOOOOOOOOW! CAN YOU FEEL IT!
I love their music so much!!!
All I can say is EWF music is heard, loved and used to educate and uplift generation, after generation.
💜🖤💜🎶 🌟 EWF 🌟 🎶 💜🖤💜
💎Gifts from another planet 💎
Timeless and supreme
Phillip and Maurice only sang, wow wow wow. Two angel voices my my my.
A collab touched by God
Amzzkng voices. Incredible till today
If this is 1983, they were formed more than 10 years ago. Starting as the salty peppers in 1969.
Tom Joyner when he had hair. RIP Maurice
I met him once when they were 8n Germany on tour in the 70’s.
@@sophiasurgis2130 it was either 74 or 75 in Frankfurt, Germany. They were in concert with Santana (can’t remember since we only went there because of EW&F.) we found out what hotel they stayed and went there. We talked to Maurice and their manager at that time Leonard Smith, just the nicest coolest guy. It was a dream come true for me. Later I got pregnant (from boyfriend later became my husband) and guess what name I gave him since it was a boy? You guessed it.....Maurice.!! I’m have a picture of my friend (Bridgett) and Maurice! Yes, that was the coolest thing ever......
@@sophiasurgis2130 I know I have it, but I need to go thru my pictures and find it. I will copy your email and then sent it. But please be patient 😃😀😄 glad you enjoyed the story and yes he listened to all my EW&F albums ( back then we had albums) lol.......
Gracias maurice white desde siempre su sencillez y estilo con su ritmo...desde chile ... esa es la manera del mindo
This use to come on,on Saturday mornings, when I was a kid,I remember this episode.
Mr. Maurice White a true servant of God.
"If there ain't no beauty you gotta' make some beauty" -- EWF!
Geniuses!
Cuánta humildad...!!!de dos grandes de todos los tiempos!!! Mis respetos!!! Descanse en paz Mauricio y larga vida para Philip!!! 🙏👏👏👏😍👍
Wonder whatever happened to"The Complex"? Philip and Rice sound like a choir when together! Now I know why!
I would love to hear El Debarge sing this song
Magnificent!
Love them
Wow I
Did not know that was Tom Joyner interviewing them.
RIP 🎈🌹🙏⚰Amen
Que lindo es Philip en este video 💘
Se ve muy guapo ❤🌟
That bump at the end was nice!
Who said anything about herpes?
My favorite band as a kid in the 1970s and 80s, I am white. Is that allowed?
This why EWF's live concert vocals never sounded the same after Maurice stopped performing with the band.
They don't sound the same. In my opinion, it's not the same without Maurice.
Thats because Maurice was EWF. Phillip said it.
Those are two are nuttin but trouble yall!...that Maurice awhile and that Phillip Bailey!...😁
3:07 rehearse and rehearse
What is the name of the song that starts in 3:36?
It’s “That’s the Way of the World” but with a cool live vocal arrangement. I’ll look for the live clip
Indimenticabile
Música boa
He sings as high as I do? Have you heard Philip in the early 70's before he wore out his range?
James Torti uhhh he never wore out his range. He sings just as well
@@rinnemichelle946 💯 Phillip sings just as well
Por Favor.. desde chile.... Que conversan los invitados
cool
Dancei muito
Ellos se compenetran en decir.. Esta es la manera del mundo
Well damn, that's clever AF!
I never knew !!!
does anyone know the name of that last tune Maurice and Philip were singing on stage last at the end of that last clip?
That's the Way of the World (Live)
If Earth, Wind, and Fire worships idols: then they make themselves: Mud, Dust, and Smoke!
What the song in the first 5 seconds of the video while the ebony logo is showing
That looks like Tom Joyner doing the interview. Back in the day when he had hair
1:11 😤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I’ve seen some great bands perform in my time but none come close to EWF
But on the albums it has Verdine on vocals w/Maurice and Phillip... interesting
