Absolutely brilliant Dr Fung!! I lost 26 lbs doing 20 hour fasting with one of two meals. I focus on:
    1. Eating until I'm satisfied (not stuffed)
    2. Focus on nutrients (meats, eggs, seafood)
    3. Walk after my meal.
Fasting can also extend your lifespan by 15 years 🤓

Following your channel as well as Sten Ekbergs for about four weeks now and it really opened my eyes. Started OMAD with 124kg(and definetely insuline resistent) on January 27th and feed somewhere between Keto and low carb/high fat. Lost 7 kg so far and feel excellent, no hunger and no side effects. Just for fun I measure Blood glucosis three times a day and have perfect levels for the last two weeks, always beetween 80 and 110mg/dl. Last week I had my blood works done, results will be in tomorrow. Really looking forward to it. Thanks so much, you are a live saver!

Crikey losing 150lbs! That's pretty much what I weigh. You must have been constantly eating to get to that size. I just cannot comprehend allowing myself to put on sooooo much weight. At some point well before I would have realised something was wrong or looked in a mirror and would have realised that I had to STOP eating or radically changed what I ate and how frequently. But as I say I cannot even comprehend putting on 50lbs of additional weight let alone 150lbs!! Good that you have since realised and have now slimmed down for your own health, quality of life and massively reducing your risk of dying prematurely because of being chronically obese.

I'm currently at 215 and happy. 174 was far too light for my frame and I looked sickly because my skin was so loose and just hanging off me. I looked like a Holocaust survivor. I quit sugar over a year ago and just that in itself makes you feel amazing. I'll NEVER go back to Sugar and will severely limit Gluten in the future.
When I lost the 111# I combined Intermittent Fasting with HARDCORE Keto. When I say "Hardcore" I mean eating as close to ZERO carbs as possible. Sometimes the one meal I had for the day was barely large enough to fill a hand. 3, 4, and 5 day fasts also helped shed the pounds. I went from a size 50 pants down to a 34, and a 3xl shirt to a Med./Large. Best decision I ever made.
IF/Keto is incredibly easy for me because I'm cheating, lol. By that I mean that I have a condition that's SUPER conducive to IF. I have Gastroparesis which means that my digestion works SUPER SLOWLY. A small amount of food is enough to make me feel stuffed. Since I eat one meal a day the transfer to IF/Keto was a piece of cake, all I had to do was change the type of food I ate.

As you stated, stopping eating before 80% fullness is not always easy nor automatic. It takes practice and mindfulness. Social pressure can help but is more often a hinderance particularly at social gatherings or when the food is already on one's plate.
Fasting itself for whatever goals can also be difficult due to social pressure. One of the best pieces of advice I've taken from your lectures/books is "CHANGE THE DEFAULT". We must change our environment, habits, and social pressures to make it easier and normal to make better health choices such as fasting, Thank you for educating us on the benefits of fasting and restricted calorie intake which make it paramount for us to:

Agreed. Culturally as well it's very hard to avoid when food is associated with generosity and not consuming your extended families food is a sign of bad manners or a lack of gratitude. Unfortunately with family and friends I purposely arrive to events at a later time once festivities have well and truly begun so as to not offend anyone or make it obvious that I won't be eating everything. It does help though when friends/family are supportive and mindful but some of them are also jealous/snarky so you can't win all the time sadly.

Would be interested to hear Dr Fungs views on reduced caloric intake without fasting too. I've noticed in periods of stress my appetite disappears completely, sometimes for weeks on end. During those times I focus on eating mainly meat, fruit, raw veg, nuts and avodos etc, so the nutritional content is high, but there will be the odd day where I barely make 1000 calories. I lose weight fast, sometimes 5lbs a week or more, and it never comes back on super quickly either. I'm guessing I would average 1400-1700 calories a day, sometimes for 4-6 weeks. I never feel tired or run down during these times, apart from the obvious effects of high stress. Has anyone experienced this unforeseen change? I switched from vegetarian to Whole 30 overnight 4 months ago. I have progressed to a clean keto/ IF 6/18 diet. A month ago I noticed what I thought was a blackhead in my mustache which turned out to be black whiskers. Then I noticed a concentration of dark colored whiskers when rinsing my razor. Upon close inspection my head hair, eyebrows and chest hair have changed from gray to a much darker color. I’m 63 years old I’ve lost 33 pounds and gone from 38 inch waist to 34. I have 30 pounds to lose but this new way of eating has me convinced I will get there.

Hi Dr Fung.I love your videos. Ive been doing Intermittent Fasting for the past 2 months. I now have endless amount of energy, feel like dancing to hardcore music throughout the day, super hyped up during work hours, 1 hour stairs climbing a day + spend 7 to 8 hours on Sat&Sun hiking up 700m+ elevation hills and still feel like going for a run after the hikes. My muscles are not sore either. Is this normal and sustainable? There is just too much energy in me all my colleagues are noticing im constantly in a buzzing-hyped up state. I dont feel hungry at all even after all the exercise, my skin/lips turned pink, and I only get 5 hours sleep before waking up naturally feeling super fresh and dancing again. Dr Fung please kindly advise if this is normal and whether i'd crash at some point if this continues? Thank you so much!

Just to update. I completed my 3 day fast and went to the gym each evening whilst fasting. I literally felt amazing, didn’t get hungry at all but I think that’s because I’m fat adapted from Keto and drank at least 2-3 litres of water each day.
I got to day 3 and had to decide whether I wanted to break my fast or continue as I felt like I could go on and felt amazing, however, I decided that I’d break my fast as 3 days is ample for cellular healing.
I actually didn’t lose any weight but felt so good and will 100% be doing 3 days fasts once every few months.

You may find that it’s pretty ok to work and water fast because you can drink black coffee or tea ( add a little heavy whipping cream if you don’t like plain), herbal teas, water, salt water for electrolytes, so you can be very comfortable intermittent fasting. Then eat one or two medium to small meal with low carb for good weight loss. Try it. Watch more Dr Fung videos. 🏆🤠😎

I want to live as healthy and as well as I can, but having lived a very independent life I would frankly not want to live if I end up as a potted plant in a nursing home or to in any way lose my independence. And no matter how healthy I am, if I've outlived all those I love then living doesn't mean much to me. Like the animals we eat, I want to have a good & healthy life & one day just fall over dead.

The anabolic aspect is interesting. I think there's a catabolic effect around 16-18 hours, but when the fast is over or when it's extended beyond that, it's anabolic (and still in some ways catabolic at the same time-as in autophagy), right?
PS: I believe at least one of your books said you burn some lean mass early in the fast, but you gain it back (if you get protein) when you break the fast.

    • @LTPottenger
      @LTPottenger 2 роки тому

You always have a catabolic period that starts almost immediately after you eat. This is part of the reason many meals is bad, you are constantly switching gears and burning lean tissue more than needed, while if you just did it 1-2 times a day you would come out better.

      1. This is assuming you are healthy and were otherwise getting those nutrients before fasting. Part of what makes fasting so powerful is stress adaptation, including the stress of lack of nutrients. However you do still need sodium and potassium, and preferably magnesium too. Everything else you don't need unless you're doing an extremely long fast of like a month or more.
      2. You don't need to brush your teeth during fasting, but if your mouth feels dirty then just brush with water. I don't want to get too detailed into the following because there's a lot to talk about and I don't feel like putting in the effort for a youtube comment maybe a dozen people will read: fluoride and thus toothpaste are terrible for your teeth. Stop using it. Instead after eating swish your mouth with water a bit to clean it, then put a small amount (1/8 teaspoon or slightly more) of baking soda in your mouth and swish it around with your saliva, then brush with this baking-soda-infused saliva. Spit it out and rinse. Don't forget to floss before the baking soda!

Hi. Dr Fung has said in other videos that you can have vitamins while intermittent fasting. He has also said that even if you have a small increase in insulin, you body will use up the sugar/carb item and you will go back to low/baseline insulin level that allows cellular and body improvements. Dr Fung says that you don’t need to achieve and maintain ketosis in intermittent fasting to get great benefits. Remember you can get electrolytes from salt water during fasts to help with headaches. It's fasting time
Some of the many benefits of fasting and low carb diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weght loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.
