    This is a wonderful example of how to be sensitive and respectful, and I really appreciate it and learned from it, but the memory loss with dementia means we would be having this conversation many times a day as She looks for her keys in order to drive somewhere (even though we've taken away her car and get her what she needs).

    • @teepasnowvideos
      @teepasnowvideos  4 роки тому +4

      Yes - it's true you will have the conversation many times. Do you have some other alternatives she can use to get transported? Uber, Lyft or another driving service? A family member that's available to get her where she needs to go? Hey Mom - I really need to go out and pick up a few things...would you mind going with me?

      @@teepasnowvideos Tx for taking the time to reply. I've recently discovered your vids and have learned *so much* . My person is not able to manage a driving service and cannot remember that she shouldn't drive and then won't believe us that she shouldn't. We are coming to realize this is just a very unpleasant stage (taking away driving independence) and it will take some time to get through it. I don't think there's any strategy that works when the person simply cannot remember why/that she shouldn't drive. "It's the principle of the thing" she says. And she's right. 🙄

    My mom got lucky with my Nana. She went the wrong direction for about thirty minutes and ended up on the other side of the next town. She went into a restaurant where my uncle happened to be having lunch. She didn't know where she was, or what she was doing there (she thought she was at the beauty shop) He took her home and he and my mom sat down with her and told them that is a scary situation. If she had kept going she would have been in the next town in like another 45 minutes and there was no one in that town she knew... what if someone hurt her, stole something from her, and she didn't remember my mom's number to call her? This was in the late 1990s when cell phones weren't everywhere -- Nana wouldn't have liked cell phones anyway.
    Luckily she agreed, and they were even able to leave the keys out on the kitchen table but she never picked them up again. If she needed to go somewhere she would go get Papa, if he wasn't there, she was to go to the neighbors.

      @@teepasnowvideos I wrote my English paper on her battle with Alzheimer's. Your videos and knowledge helped tremendously in understanding why she (and my Granny, who I think had vascular dementia) was behaving the way she (they) did. My English professor encouraged me to make it a book, so that's what I'm going to do. :) Thank you for all that you do!!!

    This approach works wonders for a number of high & mid- risk activities, like trying to do electrical fixes around the house, getting on a ladder, using an open flame, or using equipment like a lawnmower.

    Is there a way to honor your parent and tell the doctor the truth at the same time? My Dad pretends everything about him is perfect and he lies when we are at the doctors office. He gets mad when I tell the doctor the truth but I know she needs that info to treat him properly. We get in an argument every time we go to the doctor's office; it's embarrassing and upsetting for us both. Plus the doctor thinks we never get along.

    I'm 74 years old, retired nurse, disabled. My legs don't always work so walking can be a challenge. As a nurse i had many patients that were not safe to drive. Had many conversations about giving up the car keys. I realized that me driving abilities were becoming unsafe. Not being able to drive is awful. You lose your independence and then someonle else has to drive you. It really sucks!!!

      Hi, @lorbechhi8819, glad to hear that your fiance has been talking with her. It's difficult conversation to have, but one that we all may want to understand might not be a one time conversation.
