I have been living in the Philippines for over 8 years. I have to agree with about everything you said. No one comes to the Philippines because of the food, probably the worst in all of Asia. The food prices are crazy now in the Philippines if you want anything other than Filipino food. I love the Philippines, even with its downs

I have been planning a trip to the Philippines and your video popped up, thanks for posting this... very informative! As for the difference in prices, I think it is important to remember that the Philippines are one of the few countries in all of Asia to not share a land border with any other countries. As such, all trade has to happen by sea or by air. This adds certain import costs, which you are more likely to see in Western or Foreign cuisines. So I wouldn't be too surprised by that. Products produced domestically would probably be far more competitive in terms of price point. Also, the general fluency in English can be viewed as a bonus ;)

As a Filipino, I would have to say that restaurants here generally don't do foreign food very well, if you like good food, you'd have to go eat at local restaurants selling Filipino food. Chinese food or Filipinized Chinese food is also very good, but other cuisines are typically botched... or you'd have to pay a hefty price to get good foreign food. So yeah, if you'd like to move here in the Philippine, you should get used to the local Filipino food because that is what we do best.

I live with my family in the Philippines, in Rizal province. We have lived here for the past 5 years. We own property. We have commercial interests and have a decent income. We look after the kids' education, at school and university, so they can have decent lives. I like living here. I used to live/work in Thailand and Laos, which I enjoyed. I don't know where in the Philippines you have been experiencing, but I find the Philippines far cheaper than Thailand. I must admit that I have a preference for Thai food, but I enjoy the food here. Where I live, the Filipinos are genuine in their hospitality. In Thailand they are just after your buck.

Never been but just looking at video so they seem far more outgoing than Thais, which is since. Only in very small communities do Thai people make small chat but generally very reserved people. Filipinos seem more like Americans in how they speak in public which is a nice feature.

I've been 8 times over 15 years for friends weddings, business trips and two dive holidays. Islands are beautiful people are nice, accommodation is over priced for what it is and food is a deal breaker.

As a FilAm, I generally agree with your sentiments. I can cook, so I'm not as swayed by the local food choices or restaurant costs. But, in general, island nations such as 🇵🇭, Japan , and even 🇬🇧 tend to have bland native dishes. I guess it has something to do with no neighbors to influence the local diet. Goods and services are also impacted since everything must be brought in by plane or ship. Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul can sometimes have an antiseptic, dystopian anime-like vibe which I find off putting and tiring. Manila feels like it is straddling the 80s and modern times simultaneously, like Tijuana used to be but is rapidly evolving out of.

My honest opinion is that you can't be a traveler in different cultures if you're just constantly looking for what you want. There are themed hotels and theme parks for that kind of expectation, but if you visit a place that's so different from what you're used to you have to decide if you really want to experience another culture or if you just want something comfortable, familiar, and within your price point because, if it's the latter, I would advise that while the Philippines is a warm, welcoming, and beautiful place it's more for the adventurous who are willing to reciprocate the Filipinos' acceptance of visitors from other cultures.

Also, you could stay in some other areas and probably experience a different vibe - Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Cavite, etc. If you want high quality Western foods, stay in BGC, although prices will be same as U.S. there.

Both the Philippines and Thailand are vibrant Southeast Asian countries, but they have distinct differences in culture, economy, and lifestyle:
    1. Culture and Religion:
The Philippines is predominantly Catholic due to its Spanish colonial history. This is reflected in its festivals, traditions, and societal norms. Family ties are strong, and religion plays a significant role in daily life.
Thailand, on the other hand, is mostly Buddhist, which deeply influences its culture, arts, and way of life. Temples are a central part of Thai society, and there is a strong emphasis on respect, particularly toward the monarchy and elders.
    2. Tourism and Attractions:
The Philippines is known for its beautiful islands, beaches (such as Boracay, Siargao and Palawan), and diving spots. Its tourism often centers around natural beauty, cultural festivals, and historical landmarks.
Thailand has a mix of natural beauty (like the beaches of Phuket and Krabi) and a rich cultural history (like the temples of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Ayutthaya). Thailand also has a well-developed tourist infrastructure and is famous for its vibrant street markets and food.
    3. Economy:
The Philippines has a growing economy, heavily reliant on its BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) sector, remittances from overseas Filipino workers, and a developing tech scene.
Thailand has a more diversified economy, with tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing (especially electronics and automotive sectors) being key drivers. It has long been seen as one of the more stable and developed economies in the region.
    4. Cost of Living:
Generally, both countries offer a relatively low cost of living compared to Western countries, but Thailand is often seen as slightly more affordable for expatriates due to its well-established expat communities and infrastructure.
    5. Language:
In the Philippines, English is widely spoken and is an official language, making it easier for foreigners to communicate and navigate the country.
In Thailand, Thai is the primary language, and while English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, it’s not as prevalent in more rural regions.
    6. Food:
Filipino cuisine is known for its diverse flavors, heavily influenced by Spanish, Chinese, and indigenous traditions. Dishes like adobo, lechon, and sinigang are staples.
Thai cuisine is famous globally for its balance of spicy, sweet, sour, and salty flavors, with dishes like pad thai, tom yum, and green curry.
    7. Political Landscape:
The Philippines has a democratic system, but its politics can be tumultuous, with issues related to corruption, inequality, and infrastructure challenges.
Thailand has experienced several military coups and political instability over the years, but the monarchy plays a significant unifying role. It has a unique mix of military control and democratic processes.
Both countries are rich in culture, heritage, and natural beauty, but the key differences lie in their religious influence, economic focus, and lifestyle. Would you like to explore any particular aspect in more detail?❤️🇵🇭

Foreign tourist are more interested in Thailand it's because of its vibrant Asian culture aside from its also having natural beauty/wonder while the Philippines attraction is merely on natural beauty only which attracts only tourist coming from South Korea and United States of America. Remember this, not all foreign tourists are interested in natural beauty or wonder of nature when they travel anywhere, they also look for the different culture to satisfy their travel lifestyle just like most people from all over the world traveling to Europe and North America. The Philippines is unique in that it has over 7,000 islands divided into 18 regions. It is not land locked, like most of Thailand. It also has over 200 languages & dialects. As varied as it’s dialects and regions also exists their varied cuisines and areas where you can choose to live (And nope, I don’t stay or haven’t stayed in a rooster noisy neighborhood. I stay in a gated community, where I could only hear crickets at night). You will find in these cuisines many similar dishes to its SEA neighbors, as well. Depending on your budget, area that you’re living there (be it a city or a province), it is very possible to find a very comfortable life that you’re accustomed in the west (especially since English is everywhere, too). Yes, the usual negative stereotypes about the Philippines exist. But to say that, they are all true or the only truth about the rest of the country is very much erroneous. After all, every place or country has some pros and cons to consider living in. It is still possible to have a very happy retired life over in the Philippines - for example, the vloggers “My PI Dream” or “Finn Snow” comes to mind. But good luck to you, if you found your happy place in Thailand, great for you! Just a favor though - if you want to make opinions or assumptions about a country, at least know that yours was only based on how many days stay in only one or two of Metro Manila's districts.

Unlike THAILAND VIETNAM MALAYSIA they are interconnected via roads. they can share Power Grid electricity, Internet, no need to travel by Sea. Once inside, you'll be also charged millions of Peso just to walk around and look at things? Then, a pasta in an Italian resto made by an Italian chef from Italy will cost you a few millions more?

Thai food is massively overrated. It’s very samey, you get bored with eating it after a couple of days. Filipino food is the most underrated cuisine in the world. It’s fantastic and varies massively from province to province. Next time you go to the Philippines you need a local foodie guide to show you around.

It's not a broke thing, it's a value/ quality thing. I have done everything from street food to 5 star and money doesn't necessarily make the food better. I am retired early and money is no longer a major concern for me regarding food; it's if it's enjoyable for the price I'm paying.
Example: Mc Donald's in the US, imo, is garbage and way less quality than Aisa. Average cost for a Big Mac is 10 usd. California is 18 usd. Philippines 4 usd.
      Thailand 6 usd.
If they are all equal where should you eat mcdonalds? If the most expensive (US), is available, would you pay it and you already know it's worse than Philippines or Thailand??
What he is saying is food is cheaper and better in thailand overall even non local (aside from this mcdonalds example). Usually, per country, you can spend more but all of these things scale. Him spending more can improve quality but doesn't really change value overall.
I bounce around Asia and Philippines is quickly becoming similar to the US where you are paying more for a less valuable product. I would agree, from travelling to all major Asian countries, the best value for food is Thailand, then maybe Vietnam.
When you start factoring in like serious level foreign food (value quality) it becomes almost impossible to find aboard and I can count only one or two places per country that has next level items. I find my self thinking, why am I paying more for an Asian version of terrible foreign food when I can just find quality of something else. This is what he talking and you may not understand it unless you leave your country to experience your local food somewhere else. It's not about the money more it's why am I paying for an inferior version when I have had it better elsewhere.

Joh you really got reamed for this video and rightly so. You are trying to rebrand yourself after losing your job and seem to be lost at the moment about what to do. I subscribed to your videos because you are a long time Thai Expat and my interests are regarding Thailand and especially Chiang Mai. Stop throwing crap at the wall to see how much sticks and get back to your speciality. Spending 2 days in a City and forming an opinion does not make for a good video.

Cebu has better food even service due to touristy place. Metro manila is just not developing do much in service. No competence only locals. EvenCebus streetfoods are much beter thanMM but but M M is more develop than cebu of course. I hate BGC they never sell affordable foods for locals very limited. Cebu has a lot eat all you can food very cheap like in parkmall areas, it park even in small shops.still affordable. Traffic is also worse there.
