If my memory is still good, I recalled that the MD Aviation unit has a history of the first police helicopter to arrest someone on the ground. One helicopter flew, landed around a suspect in the field, the pilot or co-pilot jumped out of the chopter and arrested the suspect.
I've worked with MSPAC Trooper 5 many times and they're pretty cool. Where I am in WV, it's quicker to have them fly in than the state's Healthnet helicopters
It's the one thing I will really miss when I leave Maryland- their incredible medivac system, along with the UoM Dr. R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center- Basically the best in the world. Note: The helicopters are paid for by Maryland vehicle registration fees. Totally worth it! If they can't fix you, you cannot be fixed.
Proclaim today #NationalPrayerDay in Maryland. Marylanders cherish our heritage of religious freedom and the power of prayer to strengthen bonds of understanding, tolerance, friendship, and unity among all people.

“ Off the ground in 10 minutes.” While they are on standby ?? Unless I’m missing something, I’d hope they would be able to get off the ground quicker than that
So how it works is, from the fire ground to our dispatch center, to SYSCOM, the helicopter gets a pre-alert, SYSCOM does checks of, hospitals, closest helicopter, weather, flight conditions and much more. So 10 minutes is very quick.
Its really cool that they mix the police and the EMS mission. Very versatile.
Spent 31 years as a flight nurse/medic. Met these folks many times over the years. Very squared away, professional organization. Stay safe

Love working with the Aviation Unit, very thankful for them and their skills.
Thank you for your service to the State. This makes me feel really good about being a resident of the State of Maryland.
Thankful for all you do. Stay safe!

Since government operated, are medical services free of cost to the patient?
Not at all not in NJ at least it’s $10-$50,000
Yes, Maryland charges a nominal surcharge on drivers license renewal to cover the cost of this wonderful world class service.
The helicopter flight it self is free to the patient, any medical aspects they preform they have to pay for.
@@kennybaker7821in NJ the Jemstar/NJSP Medevac helicopters are free of charge. Hospital Medevacs cost the patient money

so are they sworn in police officers or are they just civilians with the Ems training
Sworn in officers
They are sworn in Maryland state Troopers.
Most of the pilots are civilians; the providers in back are Troopers;
When or why did this become a police function?
Here's your answer
mdsp.maryland.gov/Organization/Pages/SupportServicesBureau/AviationCommand/History.aspx
It has been a police function since it's inception in the early 1970's. It is the first civilian medivac system in the United States.
