    Hi
In this video I quick show you how I have successfully repaired a PDC module from a 2011 BMW X1 that had suffered water damaged.
I would like you apologise for the abrupt end of the recording... run out space on my phone.

Thanks so much for taking the time to upload this. The PDC on our 118d has never worked. I took it apart and found exactly the same pin on the same IC had corroded. I'd previously tried to just re-solder it to the board, but that didn't work. I saw your video and made an identical jumper. Now works great. Thanks again.

Dude you are the best. Had this problem on my 116i from 2006 two times. The first time i bought a used one off ebay, then that one died of the same course after 1 1/2 years. The jumper works just fine, thank you :)

Thanks for this, i found exactly the same leg had burnt out/corroded and managed to expose enough to solder to.

Thanks so much, same problem on my X1 and solved thanks to your video!!! i only pull out all the water form the foam, and dry the module opening it, re-put it on AND WORKS PERFECTLY!!! THANKS THANKS THANKS, one thing: also on my module i noticed that the second soldering from the right on the chip was not good, but i didn't do anything as now, if you can explain better what you have done soldering that new wire with another video it will be great.....thanks again

I have both the PDC and the rear view camera control module, both damaged from water intrusion. A third board is undamaged as that board is encapsulated in putty. I am going to attempt this repair and if successful, I am going to coat the boards with epoxy and make the cases watertight so this doesn’t happen again. From all I have read, all these vehicles are prone to flooding of the areas where these modules sit and it amazes that BMW had not addressed this in at least the 2011-15 models.

      Here’s a follow up:
About 2 months ago during our rainy season, both the rear-view camera and the PDC sensors on my 2015 X1 became intermittent and then failed completely. It was apparent the two were connected. I tried cleaning the sensors, etc but the parking sensor button wasn’t even turning on. I was going to wait until taking it for service. Recently, inspired by some of the videos here, I decided to look in the back and sure enough 2 out of 3 modules had tell-tale signs of water damage. The aluminum housing of the camera module had corrosion and pitting and the board inside had traces covered with powder, presumably, from this corrosion and pitting. I cleaned the board with a toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol to a point where it looked all right but plugging it back in (without the aluminum case) did not improve anything. The undamaged module is covered with some conformal coating and I don’t understand why BMW would not have done this with all the boards. The damaged board had the second pin missing (PIN number 19 actually) as in this video. There was not even a stub left to solder a wire to. I purchased a replacement chip L4949EP-P for USD 1.50. This is a voltage regulator that down converts 12VDC to 5 VDC. The missing pin is the output. I removed the old chip, cleaned up the solder pad and soldered in the new chip and made a jumper connection between the chip and the capacitor as shown in this video. Tested it, found the sensors and camera to be working, covered the chip with hot melt glue. I also sealed the aluminum casing of the camera control board with hot melt glue. Here is hoping they provide sufficient waterproofing.
BMW service said they’d charge $200 to diagnose the water leak. In the back they said the drain lines could be plugged. I don’t see any evidence of that. Given the number of complaints about the leak, you’d think there would be a recall but there has not been any.
Hope someone finds this information useful.

The IC is easily available, I replaced it on my E87.
Aren't you afraid of ESD, putting the board on the carpet like that?

This might be impossible to answer, but I'll ask anyway. I've just watched your video and discovered that my X1 has exactly the same issue, but although your example is wet, mine is literally swimming. That whole compartment is flooded, but I can't see an obvious entry point for the water, so that I can prevent it from happening in future. Any pointers?

Great save! would you attempt to get another IC or just replace the unit if this didnt work? also does a donor unit have to be programmed?

    • @LMAutoRepairs
      @LMAutoRepairs  8 років тому +2

      Hi
      Thank you for your comment.
If this fail again, (which I hope not... lol), I will try to replace the IC.
A second hand unit, should work straight with no programming or coding.
(Will make a video if that happens...)

I have just completed the path for the damaged leg of the chip... using the wire.
It depends on bad the damage is, you might not be able to have it repaired... you need to assess that yourself...
