That crowd was disrespectful as hell…Stokley (and Mint Condition) are The Truth! We can only dream of seeing quality live performances like this now. The 90’s were full of pure greatness!
I think camera mics just don't pick up on crowd responses well which leads to people who think any performer deserves anything coming and also basically suggesting they're smarter than everyone to say the crowd was lame. I really think it's just the mics. If you think a mostly black audience in the heyday of this song, "didn't appreciate" it, I think you're not really thinking critically.

I wish I could feel the way about modern songs that I feel for songs like these. I can listen to this song everyday and still love it. They didn't get into it until the very end when he was scat'n. It took them a while, but at least they finally got it. It reminds me of a video I saw of Jimi Hendrix performing "Hey Joe" in front of this audience. They didn't get what they just experienced. I bet both audiences look back and can't believe what they just witnessed.
