This is so helpful- one caution when removing the battery, use downward pressure so you don't lift the buttons out of place on the other side.

Everyone in this comment section that this worked for owes this man multiple beers and a 50 dollar amazon gift card. Most people would call the dealership and tell them what's going on and they could be honest but still they're ripping you off either way by changing it for you for 50 bucks or they could really get a gullible person and say the whole fob needs to replaced... by using a simple scan tool to reprogram a new fob... still charging you like 200 bucks for a new one

Thank you for this video! I followed your instructions and successfully changed my key fob battery just now. Got lucky that I have a bunch of those batteries leftover from a pack that I bought for changing the battery in my garage door opener remote.
Be careful when you separate the two side of the keys. The entire fob fell apart on me along with all of the little components - took me a while to get it all back together - pain in the butt. Btw, if you were wondering, replacing a Honda fob takes 3-4 hours and it's about $400 bucks at the dealership - the car and key must be programmed together! Big pain. I was going to replace my fob, but after hearing the $400+ price tag and 4 hours, decided to double down on my efforts to put the fob back together - it worked and saved me $400 and having to deal with snarly Honda service people. I waiting for the replacement battery. Honda - big rip off.
Yeah, all the little face plates with the lock-unlock-trunk-hold images fell out and were a pain in the butt to put back together. I had the horrors I was going to fail and have to shell out $$$$ for a new fob, but with patience and care I was able to put the "puzzle" back together. I detailed the procedure in my comments elsewhere on this page. The current date is Oct 24, 2022

One thing to be aware of. When removing or replacing the battery take care to NOT break or bend the 4 battery retaining tabs. Otherwise there is a good chance the FOB won't work correctly. Don't do this with a cold FOB (most FOBS give the error indication when they are cold (winter)). I would do this with the FOB at room temperature or a bit higher so the plastic table are not brittle. Less chance of breaking them.
The only thing I had go wrong was not lining it up perfectly which caused the alarm to go off. I took it apart again, realigned, and then it was done. Just take caution to not do this procedure in the middle of the night when people are sleeping😁

This happened to me. I used tweezers to get the old battery out and the whole thing fell apart. Now I need a video showing how to put it back together, including the lock and unlock buttons, the trunk button. Etc.

Also...buy two or three in a "2-3 pack"...because, even after changing out the batteries...some are almost dead whilst still being sold as new. Another nightmare...I know.

Helpful. But then the half that holds the buttons fell off and all the buttons fell off. Was a chore finding out which buttons go where and then getting them back in and snapped back together. Lucky I had my wife's key fob to figure out where the buttons go back on. Had no idea there was an emergency key inside it, was wondering what happens if the battery dies, but now I know.

Just what I needed. Anyone watching this make sure you keep your thumb over the battery/fob while prying the battery off just like the video. Mine broke apart and the buttons fell out. I got it fixed quickly and it works fine tho.

Thanks. CAUTION: don't try to remove the old battery by pulling up on it, that popped out the entire assembly and 4 little pieces scattered all over. Then took 1/2 hour and help from God to figure out where each piece went and snapped back together. In general I don't like these FOBs: they're needed to start the car, but unlike a key the car will keep running without the FOB. That cost me a $90 parking ticket since I left the car running with a friend who drove and parked the car, then he could not restart it without the FOB, we got $90 ticket. Another time the FOB got the slightest bit damp and stopped working, I was stranded for 5 hours.

one point glossed over - when removing the old battery, MAKE SURE that your thumb is pressing on the frame under the battery while removing it - 1:57. If you don't do this and just pry out the old battery, you COULD end up disassembling the fob, with several pieces falling out.
As someone who has worked in Honda parts for a Honda dealership for over 20 plus years, I’m not sure where the 30-50 dollar range I’m seeing in these comments comes from. There may be dealerships out there doing that but none I’m familiar with locally. We charge 6.95 plus tax and we install it. I have had several customers tell me that Batteries Plus charges 30.
From the Auto Zone Parking Lot. This is not how my Honda Civic Fob looked like on the inside. Followed the directions EXACTLY and as soon as I opened it (as directed) everything fell out of it. All the buttons. Thankfully the Auto Zone person got it back together for me. Insane it comes up on the Dashboard in big orange letters and keeps dinging.

Thanks. BTW, I could not find a 3V - CR2032, which is the original key fob battery, and put a 3V - CR2016 which is a little thiner but works just fine with no problem. FYI.
