I’ve had the privilege of swimming with a manta ray along the coast of Western Australia. They’re just gorgeous. You wouldn’t believe how fast they move with just a couple flaps of their wings, so gentle and elegant. It’s one of the best memories I have.

I think a lot of people can agree that getting prodded and grabbed from day to day wouldn’t really lead to a happy life.

I remember watching one jump from the water from my grandpas dock. I actually thought it was a dolphin initially, but when I saw the body, I knew this was no dolphin. I quickly ran in to tell everyone what I saw. My grandpa said there were a few in the area we live in, Which took me by surprise, considering we lived on Tampa Bay (a very shallow water area). I was under the impression that they were a deep ocean/coral reef animal. I was wrong! It was awesome to see!
I grew up on Tampa Bay and saw a few really enormous Manta Rays, very scary. Tampa Bay is an awesome estuary and therefore a huge nursery for all kinds of sea life.

I was fortunate enough to spot three giant manta rays while snorkelling in Borneo (one of the leaped out of the water). It was an amazing experience for 12-year-old me back then.

Mantas are one of my personal favorites. They look fearsome, but they're actually gentle giants.
They always have this fantastical allure to them.
