  • The Kadota fig is a cultivar that has been around for at least 2,000 years. The famous Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder mentioned this cultivar among the 30 or so he had learned of. Figs are native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia. Sumerian stone tablets dating back to 4,500 years ago record culinary use of figs, and remains of fig trees were found during excavations of Neolithic sites from 7,000 years ago. Some historians consider it the first of the domesticated crops.
I transplanted my cutting from the nursery into heat-sterilized coco coir in 5-gallon/18.9 Liter pots after just three days, then applied dissolved Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food mixed with crushed multivitamin powder for fertilization and Bayer Advanced Insect, Disease, and Mite Control to nip any potential infestations or fungal infections in the bud. The manufacturer-suggested frequency of application for both of those products is once every two weeks.

I own a fig tree that is around 4-5 feet with 7 branches and I advice to remove the bottom suckers which is the little branches growing from the base because it takes a lot of energy from the main branch and makes it grow slower

It's too late, the suckers are big now. But they provide for balance.

For the new series you can also do pine or spruce trees growing btw how much long it takes to start fruiting?

I don't know for sure but I saw a YT video of a fig sapling that wasn't that big with figs already. So the best case scenario is one or two years if it keeps growing like it does now. My gauva cutting yielded an impressive harvest in three years despite growing poorly on balconies for the first half of that time.

FYI coco still have some salts so usually you should drain/wash the coco soil multiple times in water ...

The manufacturers always claim that it's washed. I read about other people rinsing out their coco coir in reviews. Some people do salinity/dissolved solids ppm testing with the wash water and said this brand's product doesn't need washing. It's like the problem with 1% of product reviewers saying they had infestations, you never know what you're going to get. If I notice problems it should be very easy to use the garden hose to water from the top several times over to flush out the salts.

I used it my first year growing and I’m not sure where they came from but I had a major infection of aphids and that was one of the potential sources.

Kadota Fig is a variety of ficus carica. Fun fact: Ficus carica will go dormant in temperate areas but will stay evergreen in subtropical/tropical areas, just like pomegranates. I'm excited to see how it will grow!
Edit: Btw your lemon is starting to look great again!

Thanks for the info, I'm hoping mine will keeps its leaves year round here in San Diego. My lemon tree was taking off prior to the coco coir but I think the transplant really helped. The lemon root system was doing okay but wasn't as developed as I had hoped. I think those homemade planters just didn't have enough ventilation on the bottom despite all the holes I drilled; there's a reason they make the holes and slits so big for planters.

Nice video, curious to see how your plants develop in the new location (compared to balcony) and soil. I've started growing Kaki and Banana plants this year, have you considered those for a series? They're growing quite quickly and look nice too.

Thanks Michael. I think the coco coir in these new planters vastly increased the root system aeration; so far the transplants are all recovering/showing increased vitality. I'm sure the nursery I went to has persimmons. I started 3 new cuttings series so it'll be a while before I try new species.

My suggestion is to get a different hose nozzle. The Dollar store sells a type that you dial so you can choose how you want it to spray. If you use a more condensed spray pattern, more water will go into the pots instead of on the ground and that way it will take less time to water and less water is wasted.

Currently the nozzle is very sensitive: if I squeeze too hard on the handle it starts blasting.
