Oh, I see your motivation and your power is growing. For me you are the greatest game dev for this little console. I'm sad a little bit that the hype is going down, but I guess in near future it would be back. Good job!
I think if the shipping stuff catches up people might be more interested. We'll see, but as long as I'm having fun making games for the Playdate I'll keep going.
Hey, it's really cool to see Scrabdackle mentioned here! Intentionally simple art styles are super accessible IMO, that's a great new step to try this time while expanding your skills incrementally project by project! There's a lot of cool and deceptively easy ways to make something simple 'pop' and feel alive with even a simple style like this, too - will be interested to see what you end up with! (Also, I agree with another comment that 3 frames will give you a better result for this style than 2, without really being noticeably more work! It'll help shift the way it feels from 'flickering' to 'undulating' in a good kind of way.)
You should maybe make a game similar to Undertale. Maybe a short strange adventure game with a unique story and fighting mechanics or such? (don't forget a creepy character that breaks the fourth wall)
the scope redicule could have been a pointing hand, I think this is a missed oppurtunity because you play cards with your hands :D I am looking forward to more videos of you making games since there is a lot to learn :D
Definitely do a video on coroutines, they're kind of interesting and people should get a better idea of how they work. Although it might help to talk about them generically rather than in the context of Lua. For instance, implementing them in C can be fun and they're super easy to understand that way with no language specific features to back them up.
There are some Playdate specific coroutine quirks that I might focus on that comes from the update loop itself being a coroutine, so I was thinking of going more specific rather than general actually 😅 but I'll consider the general case
Original plan is to undock the crank to pull up your deck to view it, and dock it to put it away, but I'm still thinking through the core game mechanics so I might come up with another use case.
@@SquidGodDev I think one of the problems with the playdate and it's devs is that the crank is under utilized. I can't say I have any idea to bring to the table but nothing is stopping this game from being playable from other devices if that makes sense
This looks awesome I might recommend going with the 3 Frame animation I remember watching a video about this kinda art style and it recommends 3 as the sweet spot for sufficiently wiggly lines love the content I can't wait ot get my play date and play everything u have made
Interesting to hear about your favorite devs. They seem like the opposite of many popular indie devs like Eric Barone and Toby Fox, who spend a long time just making one game. I'm not saying that's what you should do - after all, lots of little games seems perfect for the Playdate! Just don't spread yourself too thin churning games out, it's OK to take some time on a larger project! (P.s. I LOVE deckbuilders, and especially short ones, so this is a day-one purchase for me :))
I think it just fits my motivation style more. It's hard for me to stick to one project since I don't have a concept of a "dream" game. But I think this project will be a little bit of a longer one so maybe it'll strike a middle ground.
Hi I just wonder, why do you work full time as a software engineer and make gamea in your free time ? Why didn't u choose to be a full time game developer if so ? I see most of game dev related content creators don't work full time game dev. Why ?
Full time game development income is not very stable. I currently make about ~5-10 times less money doing game development than my full time job, so I'll need to get better at making games before I can make the switch.
This is way cool that you are forced to keep your projects small, relatively, because of the limitations of the device itself. Small projects is definitely the way to go to get better quickly. But it’s so hard to stick tooooo 😩 feature creep for the lose..
It really is cool to see your actual talents as a game developer just improve with each little process, in very specific areas. At this point, (and idk how much of this is just editing! heheh) it seems your workflow is really efficient, and you know what parts of your game to lead with and prioritize. Like, even just the card animation stuff already looks great
honestly, I hadn't been playing my PlayDate much recently, but stumbled on these vids and have been putting time into this great little handheld once again! can't wait to try this one out!
I really love hearing about your philosophy and thought processes to game development. As an aspiring game dev and someone who looks up to your work, I find this aspect extremely helpful as it allows me to extract big ideas that I can use to develop my own games. Keep up the great work, the consistency, and the love you put into your content, it will surely pay off one day! Cheers man :)
Yes, they make a lot of games but few are good games lol. Just because your are good at putting the puzzle pieces together doesn't mean It will be a good-looking picture.

real
Wow what a surprise - the man himself! Looking forward to the release of Scrabdackle. And I'm definitely planning on switching to the 3 frame route.

That would definitely be a cool project to try, though I'll need to play Undertale first 😬😬
SCRABDACKLE!!!!
SCRABDACKLE!!!!!
SCRABDACKLE!!!!

This will be my fav game you have made!
Thanks Pete! Just getting started, so hope it'll live up to your expectations :)
I ordered a Playdate because of you, so excited to see more content from you and your games!
I love how smooth everything is. Great Video!
Thanks! Tried to make it as buttery as possible

@@SquidGodDev I didn't know they made the main update loop a coroutine. That's really interesting. Maybe talk about both?
Video! I'm so happy that you're making another game!
It's fun working on new projects. Look forward to many more games in the future
This art style looks amazing! It's both cute and really works for the Playdate. I'm super excited to see what you do with this project!
Can u please stop using the playdate and start using godot or unity or something like come on u have a lot of potential us that
no :)
Only gripe is that the crank is not getting a use in the game so far. Otherwise it's looking pretty fun!

So cool
200th like :3
Let's go! another SquidGod upload
Thanks for stopping by the streams :)
You should make game like Ori, Have a nice death, and flame keeper whatever that genre is considered in black and white would be sick
Hey could you make a game like “retry” from the people that made angry birds?
Really nice. I also like the Hungary style keyboard😁

Interesting... Maybe I'll change it all now then
looks super charming!
literally going to try and get this console just because of you

Yeah it's definitely very difficult. I have to constantly think about scope creep.
Love the video great job
cool games, great video, congrats
but pls use de-esser on your next videos, would make your audio more complete, with respect
Ah my bad. I'll do that next time!

Thanks! I've definitely picked up on a lot of little things with each game so it's gotten easier for sure. Still learning every day!
Solid stuff. Love your work. Have you ever thought about doing a playdate game jam?
My friend PossiblyAxolotl has got that covered itch.io/jam/playjam-3
Just got core fault. It’s an incredible game
Thanks for playing!
Very cool
Nice 🎉
Have you played Inscryption? Pretty simple machanics and a similar feel to this.
I sure have. I'll probably look to the game design for some inspiration for this game.
@SquidGod nice! I just noticed the thumbnail litterally has the Trapper in it lol looking forward to more devlogs on the for sure.
I've really had an itch to build one of these games myself for a few years. Does seem like a lot of work though, but this is a great start!
I'm gonna have to look at more of your games! I just got my Playdate a few days ago and Core Fault quickly became my favorite.
Dang, that patreon is adding up to quite a deal!!
It sure is :)

im so excited to see where this goes!!!
I saw this vid and my first thought was "I haven't seen this one yet it looks sick!" then I realized that this just came out!
Surprise
‚if you want to help me find bugs, pay for a patreon membership‘.. capitalism at it‘s best xD
Joke aside, this seems like a fun project, good luck =)

From my experience I feel like I'm getting better, so I'll keep sticking to this plan.
