  • Did you know that as much as 40 percent of the food produced in the U.S. ends up at a waste facility?
Each one of us will throw away about 21 pounds of food this month alone. That means students in your school are throwing away hundreds of pounds of food every day.
The impact of food waste on our community, our economy, and our environment is staggering.
In fact, Spokane Public Schools could save more than $1.4 million dollars in food costs if we figured out a way to eliminate food waste in our schools.
In a 2016 survey, more than 77 percent of Americans said they feel guilty when throwing food away. Who needs guilt? Just take what you’ll eat, and eat what you take. It’ll ease your conscience and make an actual difference.
If students in just one SPS elementary school curbed their waste, they could stop 9,500 pounds of food from ending up here every month. That’s the equivalent of 238 cases of Washington apples.
You can help curb the waste at home too. Keep your refrigerator organized - first in, first out -and move perishables to the freezer if you can’t use them right away.
The average four-person family loses at least $1,500 a year on wasted food. Imagine having an extra $500 bucks for every person in your home because you didn’t waste food. With all that extra money, your parents might be able to get you that [insert name brand item here] you’ve been wanting.
Want to make an actual impact on your school, home, community, and world? Feed your body, not the trash can.

Maybe if it tasted good we wouldn’t have to throw it away
